  1. Uhhhhh, wat? The whining and crying is being perpetrated by those who are protesting the election outcome. I'm just sickened by their actions. I fear that the entitlement mentality these people posses is going to lead this nation down a dark, dingy road. It's already started down that path. I frankly don't care for rude, selfish, thoughtless, or entitled people. Call me weird. It's amusing that you still think/pretend to think this was the issue people had with your posts in this topic and others. If you'd said the protesters are whiny and entitled there'd probably be some argument and that'd be the end of it. Since you still say you don't get it: the problem is you made a generalization about ALL millenials. It's convenient for your mind to put all millenials into this little box but it's a bunch of horse poop. Millenials aren't what you think they are. They're a very diverse group of people just like any other generation. Ok. Seems like I hit a nerve. No reason to rehash this discussion. Again, where did I say who I voted for? I agree, Trump is whiny and needs to sack up. Pointing out someone's foolish generalization doesn't mean the people who pointed it out are upset. What do testicles have to do with it? Sorry for the "friendly fire", Moiraine. But this is why people bring up the PC culture... It doesn't add anything except something else for people to be mad at. He typed a figure of speech, I don't believe he took the time to reflect about the role of women in society before he recommended Trump not be such a fragile personality. I'm about as "bleeding heart" as they come and I routinely tell my boys to "man up" as well as tell my daughter to "put on her big girl britches". If Trump was a woman, you may have a gripe (if it even was one to begin with )
  2. Don't mean to derail a thread, but "assisted suicide" would need to be passed first. Many people would go birzerk (sp?) if a convicted murderer had a say in how/when they die and a 70 year old terminally ill person doesn't.
  3. BRB, my "worth a damn" isn't interesting, it's true. There are teachers that suck. They are just bad at it for whatever reason. They are weeded out very quickly, my guess is 90% of bad teachers recognize it themselves and quit. (edit: teaching isn't a job you can be bad at and enoy. Unless you are doing something inappropriate which "tenure" doesn't matter) The rest of your post I can't argue against. Teachers are unionized. We negotiate and come to terms with a district. Will that last much longer? I don't know. But right now it does and I'm just passing on information. Do I think a qualified teacher should be given preference? Yes. I was the teacher from Dept. X. I had to find a new job. But as a union member, I know what I sign up for. And the benefits to a "good teacher" from that union outweigh the benefits to a "bad teacher" in my opinion. It's not much different than a unionized automaker, electrician, or plumber. It really boils down to the question of how a person feels about unionized labor when talking about teacher job security.
  4. The reason for tenure is to protect teachers during a RIF (Reduction in Force). A RIF happens when a district needs to cut costs and it may effect a specific department. Tenure ensures that a "good" teacher will be allowed to stay with the district even if it is as a study hall teacher or another department that they are certified to teach in. For example: I was recently in a district that faced a RIF situation. A department X had 4 very good teachers, but 2 of them not tenured. Another department Y faced cuts and needed to reduce staff. A tenured teacher, a really good one btw, was certified to teach in dept. X. The district had to let go of one of the non-tenured to ensure the tenured teacher had a job. Tenure doesn't mean "free range" it just means that you will have a job, that you are qualified for, as long as you are worth a damn. Edit: this is a basic explanation. For the teachers/administrators, I'm aware this is a very cursory explanation.
  5. What about the formerly good teacher that's been there for 5-10 years and knows it's almost impossible now to be fired so they just coast and collect a pay check while the students don't get jack squat out of their class??? I won't speak for every instance, but "when" that happens, they are put on lunch duty, study hall, and every crappy job administrators can find until they leave. I can't speak for every incident, but a teacher that you are describing would not be hard to find in 3 years of observation, peer observations, and co-worker relationships if the administration is worth a damn.
  6. It takes a teacher 3 full years to reach tenure in Nebraska. During that time they will be formally evaluated 6 times by the administration. That evaluation will include a pre-observation form, a classroom observation, and a post-observation reflection. The "new" teacher will also be subject to multiple "informal" evaluations that involves the administrators briefly checking into the classroom unannounced while teaching (no limit to this). Most schools, if not all, have some kind of mentor program instituted by the administration with veteran teachers. My point: if a "bad teacher" makes it 3 years without being replaced, it is solely on the administration.
  7. I don't want to say "win" or "loss", there is more to it than that. What I would hope for is in red. I like Riley, I really do. I hope he gets it done here or at least to a point where the next guy can. I thought 8-4 was the ceiling this year, I was wrong (thanks for sucking Oregon ). I hope I'm wrong next year too. If Riley is sitting at 8-4 next year with close losses to an Oregon that rebounded, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Penn State I think he actually deserves and should get more time. Less then than that, and I wouldn't dismiss the "boo birds". Significantly less than that, I wouldn't be surprised to see the "retirement" that TeacherCD alluded to.
  8. Saw Teach's status on the homepage about Omaha's open enrollment policy and stockpiling athletes. Would school choice turn into an arms race in "recruiting"? For example, there is not a glaring difference in education between Omaha North and Omaha South, would parent's "choose" to send their children to a more athletically successful school? I know schools aren't making a ton of money (or any at all) on athletics so it wouldn't be smart to spend a lot on facilities, but it would cause the gap between well-funded and poorly funded schools to widen even more. If so, wouldn't that undermine the purpose of improving education when money is spent on new uniforms, buses, weightrooms, etc. instead of the classroom? I thought it would be an interesting dynamic to think about in this topic.
  9. I was also wrong about my Cowboys. I like being wrong....
  10. who says he isn't ready to play if he has to? they won't burn his shirt at this point unless it is the only option left though. and actually...no one has said that tommy, ryker, or darlington is out for this weekend. and DPE also played highschool qb if i recall correctly. we may not be full strength...but we will have someone out there. If POB's redshirt is burned on Friday, Riley needs to be fired on Saturday.
  11. I'm all for giving Ryker credit. He stepped in and got the job done. But also want to give a lot of credit to Westy who helped Ryker out a lot. Also Reilly and Carter for making some good plays. Newby also gets credit for taking a lot of pressure off of Fyfe. Hell, I just want to say congrats to all the Seniors and point out that they put together a TEAM effort and got a win!
  12. (physically straining) NM.....we agree on so many things.....!!! why??? It isn't "tied to the piece of trash that used to coach here". It's tied to a Twitter account that "mocked" a coach who used to work here. (I can see how some "uppity ups" would be hesitant to embrace it ) Sorry man - it puzzles me! Move over NM, Huskerfan2000 wants to sit in his spot

  14. I teach shop and am going to the game tomorrow. Thinking of making a sign that reads "I teach shop. How many broken chairs do you need? ($5 is on you though)" Are signs legal at the games?
  15. Your last paragraph nails it. I agree 100%. Trade schools should start much sooner than after high school. A kid that feels like "school sucks" and is "dumb" might not feel that way if their "school" was an apprenticeship as a welder, learning a trade and making 15-20 dollars an hour as a 15 year old with a pretty clear path. Mix that in with basic math, consumer math, reading and writing, how to purchase a home, small business ownership/start-ups, computer skills, stocks/bonds/banking information and BAM...things are really good. As an Industrial Tech teacher, I've been reading this thread waiting for something to "jump out" at me. JJ and Teach have quite the vertical! I could not agree more! I have around 12-18 kids in my classes. These are usually kids that have behavior problems in traditional classes, aren't high achievers, whatever. Every follow-up discussion I have after an administrator observation includes the question, "how in the hell do you get him to work?". Well, I let him use his hands to work on something he's actually interested in. He behaves well and he gets good grades. Go figure! A lot of kids aren't built for a 4 year college, some aren't even built for 2 year schools. These kids want skills and we need to give them to them. At the very least, shop classes like welding, automotive, construction need to be an option. If not, a kid will get frustrated and probably drop out, doomed to a life of minimum wage fast food type jobs. Or worse.... Diesel mechanics in the Omaha area make $50000+ (really good ones who work a lot can make 6 figures). A student, who would fit the above description, told his dad it might be something he would want to pursue. The kid came to me dejected this morning because his dad wants him to go to college because he "feels he's better than 'just' a mechanic". That isn't a message these kids need to hear.
  16. ^^^luckily, I've never heard of that story... I think it is getting out of hand too. With the internet the stories travel so fast, it seems like people are just pulling stuff out of their butts just to keep up.
  17. I read this post like a Trump tweet. The stand alone "sad" at the end matches his style. Now I read all of teach's posts in the voice of Trump; thanks for that...
  18. I know the lawsuit was dropped but does that prove it was a false accusation? Or are you talking about a specific story about the accusation that claimed it was proven he did it? Not sure if IA is referring to Trump or not. But in the case of the Trump lawsuit, that was "news". There was an actual suit filed against him by a woman who claimed he raped her. That wasn't made up. Now if an outlet claimed they had video evidence that "proved it" and showed a grainy, hard to decipher, YouTube video that kinda looked like Trump that would be garbage.
  19. Great picks by Trump. Priebus deserves a medal for managing the RNC during both the wild and crazy primary season as well as this general election. He could have sabotaged Trump's chances of winning the nomination just as DWS did on the Democratic side, but he listened to the will of the people and now is being rewarded for his efforts. Explain how Bannon is a great pick. Bannon doesn't think I'm as good as you are. Because I don't have a penis or testicles. I can't believe how much people write off a person's words. A person's words show what/who they will and will not fight for. Oh give me a break...now playing the gender card. We've already heard some pundits claim Hillary lost because of sexism, Van Jones claimed is was because of a whitelash (despite the fact that blacks have voted for the Democratic candidate for decades by a much higher margin), and on and on. Many in Obama's current cabinet are pro-secular and think right-wing evangelicals are wacko and have made such statements over the years. Valerie Jarrett is to the left what Bannon is to the right...both play to the base and are focused on appeasing the base. So that makes Bannon, known misogynist and anti-Semite, an appropriate pick as a policy adviser?! That's absurd! Also, you'd think--with a good relationship with Israel being a top priority of Republicans, that having Bannon as a policy adviser wouldn't send the best of messages to Israel. At work on my phone so difficult to reply to all the groupthink happening in here, but whatever I see trending on sites like Huffington Post are being regurgitated here. The level of freak out taking place by the left right now is epic. Everyone needs to just take a deep breath andfollow the advice of Hillary and Obama to give Trumpnq chance. The left claims to be the "open minded" party but that only seems to apply when everything falls in line with their own beliefs. Its a new day in America...rather than fighting it, embrace it. Isn't this a line from either Darth Vader or the Emperor?
  20. What are you talking about?! Jeb had plenty of charisma. Just look at his campaign slogan: "Jeb!" That ! is high energy! That, and don't forget how he would inspire his crowds to "clap"...
  21. ^^^I think you missed the point...
  22. Donald Trump wants to (at least "wanted" to) monitor places of worship because of the religion practiced there. He wants to return Marriage Equality to the states, the only reason for that is so it can be eliminated. He wants to "stop and frisk" and perform unconstitutional laws in predominantly black neighborhoods; he also equates "blacks" to "inner city people". He commented that a grieving mother wouldn't talk because her husband wouldn't let her, because he presumably thinks all Muslims are like that. He was sued for not renting to qualified black people. He said a person couldn't be fair because of Mexican heritage. He commented on how he hates black men counting his money, he'd rather have a Jewish person do it. The real question is, and I'm generally curious because this isn't the first time I've seen Nuance's question, how have people NOT seen or heard why people feel Donald Trump has in fact shown behavior (and shown it very publicly) that can be called bigoted? Not to mention his hesitation in renouncing David Duke's endorsement and other white supremacist organizations. disclaimer: I'm not a fan of the election results, but they are the results. He is our new President and I hope he does a lot of good things. Protesting won't keep him from taking office. But people have many reasons for the uncertainty they are feeling in their hearts right now, and saying they need to "shut up" doesn't make that fear go away. I believe that "fear" would be better served to organize the local level to elect people in two years that will keep him in check.
  23. Will Zoogs, or Knapp, someone....mrandyk, Please...dear God PLEASE defend this one.... What about those 3 makes you think they'd defend it? Just pulling names out. Anyone....Whatever. Someone, how has this not even had any attention after Tood posted it. Dear God this is a horrible lady. Yes, she is. And if you equate her to everyone that voted against Trump, well, there are no words.....
