I have been watching a ton of tape over the last few months. I think calling Nebraska's D horrible or abysmal is a gross overstatement, and it doesn't really explain why we lost 8 games. Despite not having a true nose, good safeties, and starting the best catch tackler/ most underwhelming 4 year starter in Nebraska history (D.Young); they didn't get a ton of help from the Offense when it mattered. Our Offense was so boom or bust, but mostly bust. There are so many quarters where the Offense did not put up points. If Nebraska is able to just eliminate scoreless halves and quarters, it changes everything. Let alone a decent jump on D would make Nebraska more than formidable. They could contend for the conference rather easily.

@Vince R. Especially in the first half of the seasons, Nebraska had a bad yards per point average. We had to get way more yards to score than other teams because we kept making stupid mistakes.
Our defense has a lot of room to improve but they don't even need to improve a lot this year to win a lot of games. And our offense needs to pick up where they left off. Just turn the ball over less. The Colorado game especially felt more like a 21 point win considering how many mistakes we made on offense.

In 2018, Nebraska ranked 99th in college football in yards per point. That means that NU put up a lot of yards, but didn't score many points. That is due to 1) needing to drive long distances, related to poor D and special teams and 2) the offense would get yards, but that wouldn't always turn into points (due to turnovers, penalties in red zone, or other factors).

Looking at the stats further, NU’s offense wasn’t good on 3rd down conversions, but NU’s defense was very poor in opponents converting on 3rd down. It seems like there is some perception bias by the OP on the offense and defense. I am excited about the numbers the offense put up when Martinez was healthy last year, and there is still a lot of room for improvement.
