Jason Peter on Rome today

Recommended Posts

You know, what Jason reports about Holtz is absolutely true. There was a kid that played for Holtz at Notre Dame named Huffman. His brother played for Holtz when Holtz was at Arkansas. When the younger Huffman was injured, he said that Holtz made it clear that he was a "non-entity" until such time as he could contribute.

Same thing happened all the time at Arkansas. A cold way of viewing the very people that can make or break you as a coach...

Wasn't there a similar situation that happened at NU with the-coach-whose-name-is-not-to-be-mentioned? Was it Keller after his injury (maybe) or am I just totally confused?

Now come on...do you really think that BC would feel this way? :sarcasm BC put the players above all else...including winning or coaching.

no, it was when Mann went down with Mono, and lost all of that weight. an interview with Kurts dad, said that basically if you were hurt/unable to contribute you didnt really matter

Man, he just smacked Notre Dame and Lou Holtz.

Wow, if all of that is true, I just lost a TON of respect for Lou Holtz. that's awful

He is ripping Lou Holtz. And while doing that, he just sold a book.

details details details!!! We need details!

Basically, his brother Damian, who was a highly touted recruit to Notre Dame broke his neck a few weeks before reporting to ND for fall camp. In the time he was recovering from his broken neck, not a single person from ND called to see how he was doing. Not even Lou Holtz, yet Tom Osborne and Mack Brown who Damian had turned down, both called him often. Then JP talked about his drug life after football for about 30 minutes lol.

lol??

I'm not surprised about Granny Holtz.

Especially after reading "Under the Tarnished Dome: How Notre Dame Betrayed Its Ideals for Football Glory"

"Under the Tarnished Dome" is the bestselling book that rocked the Notre Dame football program. Don Yaeger and Douglas S. Looney investigate the contrast between the Notre Dame image--that of a place where wins on the field are no more important than the integrity off it--and the Notre Dame football program's reality, with trash talking, rampant steroid use, pregame fights, and academic misconduct. Part history and part investigative journalism--the authors interviewed 150 people for this book, including nearly 100 former Notre Dame football players--this is a stunning indictment of the school's administration and especially of present-day Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz.

It's been around a decade since I read that book, and I try not to believe everything I read, (especially from Looney) but if half the stuff in this book was true, Holtz should've been put down long ago.

Several players told about the practice of "shunning? injured players"..No one on the team was allowed to go near or talk to any injured player until he was able to return to the lineup..I guess as an extra incentive to ignore injuries?

The only time Holtz talked directly to an injured player was the time his own leg was broken and he was trying to rehab it.

There were several allegations that I tried to chalk up to sensationalist journalism, but so far, I haven't seen any lawsuits or retractions.

I'm surprised more of the many "revolving door assistants" hadn't come forward with some of these stories, but I think this book illustrated it a little just by showing his inability to keep assistants for more than a couple years, each.

listening to jason right now; he's talking about his brother and how he was recruited by notre dame.

long story short, holtz recruited jason's brother damian (jason says flat-out says that damian had more talent than both he and christian) and everything was cool right-up until damian's pool accident.

it looked like damian might not have ever walked again. his family was holding vigil over him and this is what really frosts jason: not once did holtz call damian and ask how he was doing. not *once* did holtz he drop a note and say, "we're here for you, we support you and we're praying for your speedy recovery". it sounds like neither holtz or notre dame didn't even take the time to send a card.

additionally... even when damian did recover and did show up at notre dame to attend class... NO-ONE at notre dame even approached him to even ask how he was doing. for all intents and purposes, he didn't exist.

tom osborne on the other hand did call. he was concerned and he did care. other nebraska staff members called on damian. mack brown called along with a score of other coach that he turned down.

jason says that osborne offered helped damian get with physicians and specialists to see if his brother could ever play again. he says that osborne wasn't optimistic, but he did it more so damian could have closure. damian would later be an assistant to charlie mcbride at nebraska for three years and now he's a financial analyst.

jason makes the comparison between holtz and osborne. jason says that all notre dame has to do is open the doors to notre dame and BAM they have a top 10 recruit class on an off-year. nebraska never had stellar success when it came to recuiting, top 25 at best.

so why is it that nebraska earned two national championships and the lion-share of a third? kids know character, said jason, and will play their hearts-out for coaches when the *KNOW* and *TRUST* their coach implicitly.

yah, jason is still mad at holtz. hope they never meet at an ESPN mixer.

EDIT: rome says that this interview was one of his best. he's giving mad props to nebraska right now and the love affair that we have with the huskers.

go rome!

Thanks for reporting that. I love Rome too, but I think you have to pay to listen to the podcasts. No can do.

Holtz is kind of a screwy dude anyway, so this doesnt surprise me. Maybe ESPN will spare us the Holtz half time pep talks this season. I think Holtz fancies himself a motivational speaker. But at this point, how motivated can a guy get while listening to Snagglepuss? Hard to keep a straight face with all that, let alone while wiping the spray off your face.

He did win an NC with the Domers though, if I recall correctly, so whaddup with that? But i hate ND and everything it stands for anyway: 'god's team' and all that crap. Wiess(Coach Turtleneck pants) is a bozo too, so it's just too easy and fun to diss the Domers these days.

I heard all the JP drug stuff last year on Rome. Guess it started with an addiction to painkillers while he was in the league.

This is an amazing interview. He is going on 50 minutes.

I have also heard that he would go into uncontrolled rages during practice, sometimes physically accosting a player that missed an assignment.

Anyone that has been around college football for very long can tell you about Lou Holtz, he is infamous for his tirades and outbursts, even against his own players in practice. He is the Bobby Knight of college football, and IMHO should be shown the door and asked to retire for good. From what I have seen of him on ESPN, he makes me puke. He has no more insight than taking the average fan off the street and letting him give the commentary. Lou Holtz is a has been, a nobody. I am sure when he shows up in college football heaven he will be asked to descend to football hell, as there is no room for his kind.

Assistants know the game. If they go on the record, they get black-balled.

The guy who turned in the Baylor head coach for telling his players to lie during a murder investigation is still without a job in basketball. (Dave Bliss is doing better it seems.) Even Bruce Pearl had to serve time in purgatory for turning in Illinois for recruiting violations in 1989 as an assistant at Iowa.

I think Bobby Knight cares enough about his players to make a visit to the hospital when needed.

There is no comparison to be made between Lou Holtz and Bobby Knight. No matter what light he is painted in, no one can say that Bobby Knight did not care about his players with everything he had. That guy would take a bullet for one of his kids.
