MUTigerFan
OMFG, stop with the stupid swine flu stuff. It's no worse than the regular flu, it's just a media driven scare.... Exactly. They put 'Swine' in front of flu and people went, "OH NOES, WE GON DIE!!!!" I couldn't agree more. There will be around 30,000 deaths from regular flu this year in the US as opposed to the couple hundred from H1N1. The media can make the American public believe whatever they want. This really isn't a media thing. The situation truly concerns those who study infectious diseases for several reasons: 1. The typical age groups for seasonal flu are the very young, the elderly and those already sick. H1N1 is hitting children and young adults - groups not normally affected. 2. The speed with which it spread. 3. Being a relatively new strain, if it mutates it could be extremely serious. 4. Pregnant women have been especially hard hit. So far, about 500 US deaths, but that number doubled over the summer. And the CDC is still forecasting 30,000 to 90,000 deaths. Not a media thing. Quote Link to comment
Bradr
Then it wasn't the flu. NO ONE recovers from the flu in 1 day. I work with 2 guys, both diagnosed with it, bot around 30 and in good shape and one missed 5 days of work, the other 4. And they're both still coughing every couple of minutes. Of course. You are correct. The doctors must have mis-diagnosed those poor fools. Bad clams or something. NO ONE ever recovers from the flu in a day. (by the way, regarding people who miss 5 days of work. I bet your office seperates vacation and sick time huh? ) Quote Link to comment
Fuzzy
oh man. Let's retrace the rumor here. Helu misses practice because he wasnt feel good. OMG HELU MISSED PRACTICE, HE MUST BE REALLY SICK! OMG HELU IS REALLY SICK, HE MUST HAVE THE FLU! OMG HELU HAS THE FLU, IT MUST BE THE SWINE FLU! OMG HELU HAS THE SWINE FLU, HALF THE TEAM MUST HAVE TOO! Do you all see the scary thought process here. We took one thing a bit too seriously and ran it into a higher scare. The fact Helu wasn't feeling good one day and missed a practice. As for the academic obligations, i heard it was a few other members of the teams that didn't practice and Bo was asked why. Quote Link to comment

But the swine flue is H1N1 and is very controllable. They believe that it could easily mutate (although it is looking like it isn't going to now), and the difference between H1N1 and the Bird Flu (which I believe is HAN1? or something like that) is not very much. That's why it is drawing so much concern. They are worried about mutation and spreading that could result in an epidemic like the Spanish Flu in 1918. Quote Link to comment

Bo sent a message on twitter making fun of the rumors saying he was going to miss the game. This all started because Helu missed practice tuesday for not feeling well and an academic conflict. Calm down evryone. Quote Link to comment

As stated before, there are also an average of 30,000+ deaths every year from the seasonal flu. It's no more severe than that! Your #3 concern is correct though. Although right now that is only a possibility not a reality. Also the Health Center here on campus is not testing for H1N1 because they said the symptoms have been less severe and of shorter duration than the standard seasonal flu. CNN interviewed some students at Washington State university who had just got over H1N1 and they all said it was much less severe than the seasonal flu, "It was like having a really bad cold." Dave5
Quit fretting and whining. Its as if some are already looking for excuses, yet I think we'll win no matter who is healthy and playing. Depth people, we have depth. Quote Link to comment
Bradr
This thread is making me sick. In fact, I may have to take a half day tomorrow, and miss all day Friday as a precaution against infecting my co-workers. Very very sick indeed. Can't take this stuff seriously enough. Quote Link to comment

cornhuskers4ever
It was misinformation by the Nebraska Cornhuskers Medical Staff. Bo Pelini was explaining that Nebraska is going to have an explosive D for the Missouri game and one of the nurses thought he meant explosive diarrhea. I think the last time the flu really effected the Nebraska team was The Big XII Championship in 1996 against Texas. Quote Link to comment
