Becoming a true husker fan

Recommended Posts

relatively new to Husker Nation....going to be honest with you guys i did bet agains't them vs Missouri this past year. Been a casual husker fan for a few years now sorta flip flopping between a few other college teams mainly Cal and Penn State. Being that i am from canada and the coverage on one specific school is next to none, we just get whatever regional coverage ABC/ESPN has on saturday nights thats mainly why. It wasn't since this last year that we finally got ESPN Thursday Night football on a regular basis. Anyways ive decided that i wanna stick by nebraska and become a true fan. So what is the best websites to follow for recruiting? Any live broadcasts online? or radio calls online? like i said im lucky if im able to watch one husker game a year. Thanks again for the advice in advance!!

In my completely very unbiased opinion the best site out there for all things Husker is HuskerBoard. We have all the news that you need to know, about as fast as it's printed. Many times info leaks onto the boards before it ever hits the news.

As for what you need to know to be a truly knowledgeable fan, that could take years. But this is a good challenge! Everyone can help create a primer for you, and anyone else, right here in this thread. I'll dig up some stuff you ought to know and post it here in a few...

Recruiting (free) - Huskerboard.com

News site - Huskerextra.com

Live - Huskers.com

I no longer live in Nebraska so I don't know which radio channel is the home of the Huskers. (KFAB?)

Anyone known if there's a Canadians for Nebraska that pays for the Husker radio feed to be aired there?

ill gladly be the first....im the only one up here who lives and breathes for college football and the NFL is sorta an after thought for me!!

Huskerpedia.com is another solid news site. It has stories from multiple newspapers around the state, not just the Lincoln Journal Star (huskerextra.com). It's the 2nd free site I visit after Huskerboard.

One of the cooler things about the Huskers is the Husker Prayer. Here's the text of the prayer:

Dear Lord, the battles we go through life,

We ask for a chance that's fair,

A chance to equal our stride,

A chance to do or dare,

If we should win, let it be by the code,

Faith and Honor held high,

If we should lose, we'll stand by the road,

And cheer as the winners go by.

Day by Day, we get better and better!

The team that can't be beat, WON'T BE BEAT!

Our very own epocSoN used the prayer this year in the tunnel walk video before the Oklahoma game. Still gives me chills every time:

epoc used the phrase "In the deed the glory" prominently in his video. Here's the text:

Not the victory but the action;

Not the goal but the game;

In the deed the glory

They were written by Hartley Burr Alexander and added to the stadium in 1923, on the southwest corner:

Here's a great article about the origin of the words and what they mean to the Huskers.

More to come soon.

You can't be a Husker and a PSUcks fan, it's just against natural law.

haha, like i said i was a casual fan but i no longer like PSU. Just saying that in the past i used to just cheer for whoever, but as ive gotten more into college football ive wanted to just stick with one team. Geographically speaking Nebraska is the closest to where i am which also has contributed towards my likening of the huskers.

If you wanna drop a little dough, you can get a subscription to nebraska.rivals.com. But like many have posted already, a lot of the information that gets posted on rivals gets posted here. Of course, it's not the exact info from rivals because posting premium information isn't allowed on the board.

Anyways, here is my complete list of Husker stuff that I follow:

Unsportsmanlike Conduct - 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. central Monday - Friday. You can stream it live online at the KOZN homepage.

nebraska.rivals.com

Huskerboard (honestly the best for anything)

ESPN.com Blogger Tim Griffin (covers the Big 12)

huskerextra.com (the Lincoln Journal Star's Husker sports section)

omaha.com/section/bigred

And then I also use a collection of other not-so-popular sports mediums like the nestatepaper, daily nebraskan (the UNL student paper), scout.com (even though that is pretty popular), etc. etc.

Just to show you an example of our power though (lol), Huskerboard broke the stories of Suh getting into an accident earlier in the football season and we also broke when Quentin Castille was dismissed from the team. We were talking about both situations hours before any official news was released.
