New to the Huskers, anything I should know

Recommended Posts

let's see... I know about ne-ou. Although I don't hate some of the ppl that come out of there (Adrian peterson and Phil loadholt). I know pelini is awesome especially compared to Callahan. Not really sure bout game of the century Tommie Frazier or the walk on program. I'll be on here pretty often trying to learn all I can about the huskers and preparing for the upcoming season.

There is a nice documentary about the Nebraska walk-on program that was released in 2009 and can sometimes be seen on Nebraska PBS. They recently made it available for DVD purchase as well. You can order it here.

This article is a short synopsis of the film and has additional links to a couple of articles about the walk-on program as well as a 3 minute video preview of the documentary.

I know what you mean. I was so excited when the vikes drafted Adrian Peterson because I knew how much of a beast he was because he tore us up so badly.

I know you are looking for more recent things about the Huskers, but IMO there are two videos that all Husker fans should see to understand what this program is all about both in the past and in the present.

Great ones :thumbs

I was going to mention something about CU fans (as a group), but thought better of it.

Is it bad that the first video, about our tradition gets me all choked up everytime I watch it?

Perfectly normal. Makes me proud to be a Husker.

know why, nearly three decades later, this play still makes a husker's blood boil...

A few years ago, McCloskey was invited to Father Flanagan's Boy Town in Omaha to speak at a banquet, where hundreds of Cornhuskers fans remembered his place in Nebraska lore. A former tight end for Penn State, McCloskey made a controversial catch on the sideline that set up winning touchdown in the Nittany Lions' thrilling 27-24 win over the Cornhuskers in 1982.

After videotape of his catch was shown at the banquet, McCloskey decided to have some fun.

"Ah, I feel guilty," he told the audience. "I can't take it anymore. I was out of bounds."

I doubt it. It gave me chills when I watched it, makes me want to follow the huskers a lot more.

Basically the only players I know are Helu, Burkhead, Crick, Henery, Zac Lee, Cody Green, and now the Martinez kid. I was just wondering if anyone would be willing to just give me a quick rundown of some important things I should know about the Huskers in general, roster, coaching etc., in order to be able to know what people are talking about on this forum.

First of all welcome to this board. It is the best Husker Message Board!!!

You may want to visit the Husker homepage Here There are links to lots of articles etc. and you can access the media guide which has tons of info.

There are many good websites, here is one that might be of interest Link

Welcome to Husker Nation!

My piece of advice is to always bring a big stack of disposable red plastic cups to all tailgating events. These are the unofficial "We all know what's in there, but since you're kindof hiding it in the red cup, we'll let it slide" cups of husker adult beverages. Buy em. Use em. Love em.

Haha, well thanks for the welcome and tips everyone. I read up on some stuff, mostly game of the century though, and watched some vids. I think the best way for me to learn is just wait for the season to start and pay close attention in the games, I should have all the players down in a couple games. But I'm actually really excited for this season to get under way, I miss football.

Just out of curiosity, and maybe you said it already, but what brought you to Husker nation? Did you follow any other team before this or have you just never been fully interested in football?

I went over it vaguely in the Introduce yourself thread (I think thats what its called), but it was my dad that brought me to the huskers. He grew up in minnesota and nebraska, and we moved to lincoln in '99. I've always been a diehard Vikings fan, but never really got into college football, it just didn't interest me as much as the NFL because there weren't any blockbuster trades, drafts, too hard to keep up with players leaving every year etc. I started to get interested in the huskers last year, and the first game I really wanted them to win was against Texas, and I followed that game on my cell phones sports app. When I saw we lost I was actually sad about it, like I am when the Vikings lose, and then I started following them a little more till the end of the season and the first full game I watched was the bowl game.

So it was a mixture of my dad, and just desire to have at least ONE of my teams win a championship. I'm trying to get into more sports, like MLB, but I'm starting off with college football, and at least the Huskers give me one reason to be proud to be in nebraska.

Well, I don't know about anybody else, but I love me some extra Vikings fans. That means you, me, and Minnesota Husker are the only out of the closet Vikings fans that I know of on this board.

It's good to see you following the Huskers now, though. One thing that a lot of posters won't be so quick to point out on here, as far as Husker history goes, are the years between 2002-2007. After Tom Osborne left in 1997, we had a few good years of football under Frank Solich including another trip to the National Championship game. However, the final regular season game before the Big 12 championship, we lost to Colorado 62-36 and have never really recovered since. Until Pelini.

I'm a Vikings fan, I don't like the NFL much, but if I had to pick one team its the vikings. Then KC because they are hometown.
