BIGREDIOWAN
So with my recent scare with MRSA I've decided that I'm not going back to a large gym again and taking the chance of getting this crap again. I figure if I start my own home gym, then the only person using it will be the wife and I so the chances are pretty low I'll get anything like this again. Evidently my gym wasn't as clean as I thought it was. So what I'm asking is any of you that have a home gym out there, post some pictures of your gym and tell me what you've included in your gym. Don't be embarrased either, somethings better than nothing. I have nothing right now, but that's okay, I needed to take some more time off to stop aching from the gym. What I figure I'll need is the following: 1. Power Rack 2. Bench (flat, incline, and decline capable) 3. Olympic weight set 4. Dumbbell's (probably gonna have to be adjustable, individual hex db's are way too expensive) 5. Lat Pulldown 6. Leg Press 7. Leg Developer (leg curls, etc.) 8. Basic Trainer rack (leg raises, pull-ups, dips, etc.) 9. Rubber Flooring 10. Cardio equipment If you think I may need something else, bring it up please. I'm trying to do this with a budget around $2,500 to $3,000, but won't probably buy all the stuff all at once. Cardio equipment would be the last purchase, that's alot of cash so it's gonna be considered seperate. Quote Link to comment
GSG
Since I don't live in my own home, I just have the P90X pull up bar and a set of 50 lb PowerBlocks. PowerBlocks are by far, the best adjustable dumbbells I've ever been around. They're actual metal, not like those Bowflex crap. They come in bigger weights with stands, etc. I'm gonna need to upgrade soon, but money is a little tight with me looking to move soon. Quote Link to comment
HUSKER 37
Hey BRI..I thought you were doing the P90X thing..doesn't that just use a bar that clamps to your door header? I just got my copy but every time I reach for the DVD's my joints start to ache. One thing I'd like to caution you about, though..is to continue wiping up after you use your equipment. There's some mighty nasty bacterial critters that would love to mutate in your butt squeezins and smegma that you might leave behind and in the temporary absence of your antibodies, could build up large enough colonies to re-infect you or your Wife, or even teething twins. There's a large aftermarket of closeracks ...er...I mean exercize equipment that you can get pretty good deals on. I got an electronic stationary bike for 1 cent on ebay locally four years ago that's somewhere under a pile of clothes. It was unused before (and after ) I spent the extra nickel on it's missing bolt to hold it's right leg thingie on. There's also a chain of stores out here (and nationwide?) called Play it Again Sports that sells tons of used iron and otherd sporting goods..My son and I usually go in there to try on football helmets and hit each other with hockey sticks until we're politely asked to leave. There's also craigslist..and the local paper. I almost bought a Soloflex for $150 out of the LJS classifieds just before I decided to move out here. Just nuke everything with rubbing alcohol after dosing it with clorox if you're worried about secondhand buttsweat. rawhide
using butt squeezins' and teethin' twins sounds like a bad porn(are there any other kind) movie GBR Quote Link to comment
GSG
LOL @ smegma. That cracked me up. DO NOT BUY THE BOWFLEX DUMBBELLS. They are cheap and the highest they go is 55.5 lbs. The PowerBlocks are really solid and go up to 120 per dumbbell. Quote Link to comment
Blackshirtsguru
I would suggest a Smith Machine. You can do so much with them! I have this one and it cost me $1319 delivered. Multisports Deluxe Smith Machine Muscle System You can do incline, decline, and flat bench Lat Pull Downs Curls both regular and decline Squats Leg Curls Pull Ups Chest Flies Shoulder Shrugs Lat Pull Downs The only thing you need to buy is the free weights for it. I would seriously consider this one BRI. I love it! Oh yeah, and one of the great things about the Smith machine is you don't need a spotter! Quote Link to comment

Anyone else have vivid memories of the T-shirt you wore under your shoulder pads all week..and how stiff/hard and crusty it would get by the time you took it out of your locker..you'd crumple it up so you could get it back on over your head..and how salty the white flakes tasted as you bit the floaters in the air? Yeah..Me neither. Quote Link to comment

It would be crusty on the outside and still moist on the inside. Good times though! I miss busting heads at practice every day. Quote Link to comment

It's either gonna be PowerBlocks or Iron Masters if I'm gonna buy adjustable ones. The only issue I've heard with PowerBlocks is you can't drop them or you may break the pins on them. Iron Masters are more like a solid dumbbell, but it takes about 15 seconds to change the weights. Quote Link to comment
rawhide
Use a 6 pack and graduate to a 12 pack and so forth. cheap and disposable and green friendly if you recycle. GBR Quote Link to comment
husker B-rent
there are two machines that i recomend good sir. 1. a rowing machine, there is no cardio or weight drivin exercise that will give you a full body workout quite like a rowing machine will. 2. a way to work out your neck, it seams like a useless piece of equipment but your neck and shoulder muscles are some of the most important upper body muscles. here is a picture of this device. sources: years in the gym, 445 Lb bench press, buying a personal gym a year ago. BIGREDIOWAN
Here's what I'm looking at from Powertec.com http://www.powertecfitness.com/product.php?id=workbench-power-rack http://www.powertecfitness.com/product.php?id=dual-hyperextension-crunch http://www.powertecfitness.com/product.php?id=basic-trainer http://www.powertecfitness.com/product.php?id=workbench-leg-lift-accessory If I get the lat attachement for the power rack that'll do a ton of stuff that I really do everyday in the gym now. Dumbbells I'm looking at: http://www.ironmaster.com/store/Quick-Lock-Dumbbell-System-75-lb-set-with-Rack-pr-2.html there is another option to add up to 120 lbs on these dumbbells which is what I'll do. Lastly, the olympic weight set: http://www.gtechfitness.com/bodysolidosb400s400lbblackolympicweightset.aspx Quote Link to comment
Bradr
Ditto on the smith machine. I have the older version of this one sold at Dick's sporting goods. I got it on sale for around $400 just before they switched to the new model. The quality is good and I have never had problems. Love love love this machine. No need for a spotter in bench press. Enough said. Lots of different exercises you can do. Great for incline, regular, decline bench; lat pulldowns; chest flys; tricept work; rows; etc. It also uses olympic weights for its weight, so you can get an olympic weight set to compliment it. I refuse to use a smith for squats and dead lifts, because the lack of range of motion. If you can afford it, I would pick up a smith, a good set of olympics, and then some random dumb bells to round the set out. I wish I had more rubber mats too. It would be pretty sweet to have jsut those and no carapet. Here's my man cave in the basement: (I chose the elliptical over a treadmill because I have ankle problems from an old injury) Quote Link to comment
