Texas Leaning Towards Big 12 Deal

In my opinion, this is good reason to want nothing to do with the Big 12. UT, OU and A&M get top dollar, when the rest of the 7 get less. Go ahead Beebe, give Texas more power.

The Texas Longhorns, based on a TV deal in the works that could pay them upwards of

$25 million per year, are leaning toward staying in a 10-team Big 12 for the foreseeable future, Orangebloods.com has reported, citing sources familiar with negotiations.

Texas was meeting Monday with the other remaining nine schools in the Big 12 about a TV deal included in a plan put together by Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe that would keep the league intact with its current programs, according to multiple reports.

Millions of Reasons

Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma would each receive at least $20 million annually from a new Big 12 TV contract, according to a report, comparable with what the top conference deals pay now.

BCS conference Amount of contract

Big Ten $242 million

SEC $205 million

Big 12 $78 million

ACC $67 million

Pacific-10 $58 million

Big East $33 million

Texas stands to earn between $20 million and

$25 million annually in television revenue, including money from its own network, in the reworked deal, according to Orangebloods.com.

The Longhorns network figures to generate between $3 million and $5 million, according to the report. Because the Big 12 has unequal revenue sharing, the deal will mean more money for Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma, who all would receive at least $20 million annually from the new deal.

The other seven schools in the Big 12 would make between $14 million and $17 million, doubling what they currently receive in TV revenue.

Earlier Monday, ESPN reported that the departure of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the Pac-10 was "imminent," citing four sources within the Big 12. A source told ESPN's Joe Schad that Texas president WiIlliam Powers Jr. was taking a "global view" of the landscape, excited about the importance of aligning his school with research opportunities and academic reputations of schools in the Pac-10.

But clearly being able to come at least close to the Pac-10 financial projections, while being able to still launch a network, may have swayed Powers to change his mind.

The source within the Big 12 said Beebe's plan was "gaining traction" with Powers as he worked through Beebe's projections to determine if they compare financially with the Pac-10 proposal.

Part of those Big 12 projections would likely include "adjustments" from television partners as well as future contracts that were more on par with the contracts of other conferences, the source said.

edit: the big 12 is messed up. i know it has been said dozens of times, but it is just a power structure set up to protect the interest of texas. luckily for oklahoma, they are already established, because any benefit from being in the big 12 is incidental. and for the mizzou, ku, ksu, baylor, they are so weak they are lucky to get anything. i guess it is a symbiotic relationship, texas needs a group of teams to play and control, the rest need a big team to play to remain relevant. it is unfortunate, but it seems like it could never be a balanced league, because why would it when the top team has so much leverage, and the other schools have absolutely none.

Its truly amazing how the rest of the league knows that this kind of top heavy power is what is destroying the league, yet they are willing to continue on letting the desparity become even greater and not do anything about it out of pure fear. Its like watching a dictatorship emerge.

True, but where else could KU, KSU, Mizzou and Baylor go and still get around 17 million annually? I think they would be perfectly happy with Texas getting 20 to 25 million annually as long as they get 17 million and keep the Big 12 around.

That's the problem. They are being proposed more money than they could get elsewhere, but still not presented with a very attractive option.

All that I have read about the decision to join the Big 10 is that the conference is more of a fraternity of brothers than trying to ride on Texas' coattails and hang on for the ride. Nebraska don't roll like that, and that's why we are no longer a member of the Big 12. There was a lot of respect amongst the Big 8 brethren, and some of those relationships have been deteriorated and tested in the past 14 years. This 11th hour solution by Beebe/Texas will benefit Texas most in all of this, and just enslave the rest of the conference to Texas.

Looks like A&M has their finger on the grenade pin now? They could weaken the conference even further. Texas politicians have no influence over NU, but it will get interesting if the Aggies try to split. UT will eventually be left in a conference with ISU, KU, KSU and Baylor. Play everybody twice, all games involving UT played in Austin with UT alums as refs. All television revenue belongs to Texas. Other schools get half of the gate (even games played on their campus against non UT teams). Other half paid to Texas as a fee to be in conference. :worship

Where is B12 getting additional TV money? w/o title game only major TV property is UT-OU, played at 11am local in early Oct.

:yeah

Beebe must've pulled a slick move on the have-nots by telling them that they'd be raking in 17 million. Regardless though, UT stands to make the largest chunk of whatever the final figures end up being. We already know that.

The rich get richer BLAH BLAH BLAH. TU is gonna bank wherever they end up. Money is their security blanket. Guess what Nebraska's security is now? The most tradition-rich, longest lasting, athletic & academic conference in the country. Nothing wrong with that.

yeah, i don't care that they get rich. i am kind of torn, because why should iowa st. get much, they don't produce much. but TU does feed off the little guys. and when given the choice between getting richer and helping others get richer (big12network) or just getting rich at the expense of others (bevoTV), they alway choose the latter. and they are too obsessed with control, like with the permanent conference site. how does that make sense? yes it is the nicest venue, that doesn't mean much when it is too far to travel to.
