The Best Team I Ever Covered: 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers

Recommended Posts

sit down... watch this game.... CLOSELY. The superior athleticism, combined with the brutal toughness all around this team, was absolutely amazing. As one player told me whom was a starting sophomore at the time, "we were the last of the mohicans" As this article states there probably won't ever be this kind of team put together again. So dominant on all sides of the ball.

Best. Team. Ever. Period.

Without question. No one..... And I mean no one comes close....

Please don't shoot me, but imo the 71 NU team was even better.

Sorry but husker nation voted the 95 team was better than the 71 squad via an ESPN poll which was broadcasted on tv where Kirk Herbstreit flips out :D there's a clip on YouTube. Always brightens my day!

Nice Work TO

But in my opinion its hard for me to take any of those championships seriously from 1900-1950 because of the schedules and who they were playing.

Seriously if you look at Notre Dame's 1924 schedule they played against Lombard College, Wabash, Army, Princeton, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, and Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

Michigan's 1901 Schedule looked like this Albion, Case, Indiana, Northwestern, Buffalo, Carlisle, Ohio State, Chicago, Beloit, Iowa, and Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

I could continue this with other schools

Agreed. There was a period of time (1920-1928) in which Grinnell College (Div 3 doormat) was in the Big 8 with Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa, Iowa State, and Missouri. Granted, Grinnell College played in and won (Against Iowa) the first football game west of the Mississippi in the 1800's, but the college is probably 5% of the size of the rest of those institutions and shouldn't have been playing on the same field.

Whoa! I didn't realize A&M had waited that long. That has to be tough for a school with that much money and support. We should all be thankful we are Husker fans.

As to another point made later. Didn't they crown Natl Champs before the bowl games until the mid 60s? I know there are some cases where the Natl Champ actually got beat in their bowl game. But at that time the bowl games were considered a just for fun "bonus". Makes it tough to count some of the Natl Champs before then.

<-- in honor of the 1995 team :P

It always brings a smile to my face when i see the ol ball coach throw his visor.

Mine too.

His face is just so expressive it makes it great. In that 15 seconds or so the camera was on him he seemed to go from looking stumped, to disbelief, to trying to think up a way to get back in the game, to a realization that that wasn't going to happen, and finally acceptance with the "well sh*t, its going to be a long night" face rub.

I mean who else can you see basically go through the five stages of grief on the sideline in less then 15 seconds just by looking at their face?

Spurrier is king.

1995 Nebraska was the best team ever BUT 01 Miami does come close. 95 Nebraska would win 9 or 10 points. 01 Miami had a hell of a team. They beat 14 ranked syracuse 59-0 and beat 12 ranked washington 65-7 and had a close game against VT. They could have beat us 59-7 if they wanted to they did let up in the second half. Miami had ed reed, jonathan vilma, willis mcgahee, clinton porits, shcokey, ANDRE JOHNSON, bryant mckinnie...It would go down to the 4th quarter...with the huskers pulling away in the 4th..34-24 would be the score

Regarding the 1970 "national championship" Ohio State won - they were awarded the MacArthur Trophy, named after General Douglas MacArthur (of World War II fame). The MacArthur Trophy was given to two teams in 1970, Texas and Ohio State. The Longwhorns and Buckeyes were undefeated in the regular season, after which the trophy was awarded. However, both Texas and Ohio State lost their bowl games (OSU to Stanford in the Rose Bowl, 27-17; Texas to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl, 24-11).

Nebraska, of course, went undefeated in 1970 and won the AP National Championship. Likely the only reason there wasn't a consensus was that we tied #3 USC at The Coliseum, 21-21, early in the year.
