Feeling about Nw loss 2 weeks Later

The loss honestly sucks, and I feel bad for the kids.

But as stated here before, the kids came out flat, and they had enough talent to out-muscle and out-play Northwestern at home in Lincoln, regardless of preparation.

And I still don't fault Bo and the staff for looking ahead--considering who we play back-to-back (to back if you include Iowa), you need any chance to look ahead that's afforded to you. It was a calculated risk that (so far) hasn't paid off, and is looking like it won't. Oh well--we win out, we get a possible BCS bid and a chance to play Oklahoma a lot sooner than we thought we would.

Sometimes the best things in life are born from the mistakes we make--a doozy of an OU/NU game would certainly make us forget about that Northwestern loss, right?

I shrugged off the Northwestern loss relatively quickly, was not overally upset and was pretty optimistic about us still having a chance of getting into B1G Championship game.

I figured we were done at that point and I still think we are. Michigan State has a really easy schedule down the stretch and when we lost that game I knew we were done. It will take a miracle for Northwestern or Indiana to beat Michigan State. The only thing we have going for us is Michigan State has to play at Northwestern, and they are usually worse on the road. But we still have to beat Michigan at Ann Arbor and that's the toughest game any of us have remaining.

Many thought it would take a miracle for Northwestern to beat NU at home, but anything can happen. It is definitely a possibility. Probably won't happen, but could!

Winning these next two would feel amazing, even if Michigan State doesn't lose out to Northwestern. And they won't.

Who would have thought we'd totally dominate MSU and then lose to Northwestern? I am not sure of anything any more when it comes to the Big10...like thinking that MSU is a lock over Northwestern...or anyone besides maybe Colorado. :)

For me it's more than just "irritating". I'm PO'd. :steam because the time and energy I've spent on NU football the last uumm...... 20-30+ years doesn't seem to be paying off :) I really thought that in year 4 we'd be in solid position to compete for the NC or win a conf. champ and ...at the VERY LEAST make a BCS bowl.

But the reality is that we're still irrelevant. THAT more than anything ticks me off. I can understand losing to a top 5-10 team bec. then at least you know that you're there - somewhat. But losing AT HOME is just something that I didn't think we'd be doing 4 years into TO and Bo's tenures.

The other thing that tugs at me is I know that with each year that we fiddle around being irrelevant, it makes it that much harder to recruit! The glory days of the 90's fade farther away almost to a point that we sound like ND fans.

Nobody is forcing you to be a Nebraska fan. If you hate it so much, why not root for a different team?

A stupid response I must say.

Can't believe I responded to a stupid post..... Oh well.

Saying Nebraska is irrelevant is an overstatement of pessimism, if you ask me.

I'm definitely unhappy that Nebraska can play just well enough to get into the national spotlight then fall apart, but at least Nebraska's just good enough to get into the spotlight, if only for a short time. There are plenty of other programs that are truly irrelevant (does anybody honestly think Indiana even has a prayer against MSU next weekend?). Nebraska isn't one of them.

I said it on another thread, but I really don't think we lost to Northwestern because the staff and players were already preparing for Penn State.

I don't think Pelini took Northwestern lightly at all. I don't think the players did, either.

That wasn't a freakish game that turned on a single fumble, or a bad call, or a blown play. The Huskers knew they were in a fight from the first quarter and needed no further wake-up call. They knew the Big 10 was on the line and they needed to turn their game up. They couldn't and Northwestern could. The defense didn't come out flat: they played pretty much as they have against every team not named Michigan State. The whole team was outplayed and outcoached for four quarters. As a fan it didn't sting as bad because this wasn't a game Nebraska could have won but choked, it was a game Northwestern earned fair and square

And I think some of the coaches and players "admitted" they were looking ahead to Penn State because it sounded as though they could have won if they'd really tried. I'm not convinced the Huskers would win that rematch. Although I do think we'd beat Penn State handily if we played them again.

You can't expect for a team to win EVERY home game, just because it's at home. That just doesn't happen. Yes, we shouldn't be losing to a team like Northwestern at home (or on the road for that matter), but losses happen. We've been in the Top 25 (with a lot of that time hanging around the top 10) and playing for conference championships - I wouldn't exactly call is Irrelevant.

How have we been irrelevant, especially in the past year (or week, for that matter)?

Nebraska was at the forefront of conference expansion. Nebraska was a Top 10 and 15 team this year, and if we win out we'll be Top 15 again.

And comparing us to fans of a school that sold their tickets to a visiting top team, have had multiple losing seasons since the 90s, and that is routinely outclassed by Nebraska in TV ratings, despite having their own network? I don't know if this kind of thought won you major accolades back on 'Pedia, but here that's just asinine and unjustifiably pessimistic.

Plus, if you were a fan for as long as you said you were, then you would know that all coaches, including St. Tom, lost to unranked teams they should have clobbered. It's college football--a game being played by kids that were, mere months ago, unable to legally buy porn, play the lottery, or smoke it up.

Yes, the Northwestern loss sucks. But there's no reason to go all maudlin about it--the future is brighter than ever before.

But losing AT HOME is just something that I didn't think we'd be doing 4 years into TO and Bo's tenures.

Again, if you were a fan of DoNU (and of college football), then you would know this isn't true or realistic.

Dr. Tom lost at home to an unranked Wisconsin team on the road *AND* an unranked Missouri team *AT HOME* in 1974--Dr. Tom's second year on the job.

In 1976, Dr. Tom lost to an unranked Iowa State on the road and tied an unranked LSU on the road. Year four of Tom.

In 1977, Dr. Tom started things off with a bang by losing to unranked Washington State...in Lincoln. This was followed up by losing to unranked Iowa State...in Lincoln.

Man, I knew we should have run that no account Tom Osborne out when we had the chance. :sarcasm

Wow - you guys really pay a lot of attention to my "Pedia" rep :)

Only a blind homer like you would not see what's plain as day: When I say NU is irrelevant - I'm not talking about B1G expansion. Shyaaaa..... and that's "on the field football stuff". Look Einstein, this is NOT about saying we ARE ND - it's a valid comparison bec. if you go talk to any body who's a fan of a Top-10 team like LSU, Bama, tu (yes, even tu), OU or whoever, NU is not thought of in that same regard as being a NC contender.

Do they know about NU and TO - uumm .... yeah. But if that gives you the "warm and fuzzies" about NU being relevant, then you're not very informed.
