Torchlight was fun, but it in no way, shape or form compared to Diablo 1 or Diablo 2 for me. I would still much rather play Diablo 2 than Torchlight, and I expect Diablo 3 will make me feel the same about Torchlight 2.

 

Besides, when you've been waiting for Diablo 3 as long as I have (since pre-production) you can't not get it.

 

As far as battle.net is concerned, like I said, it's nothing new to people who have played previous Blizzard titles, which is the majority of people buying D3. There aren't millions of people queueing up to play this game who haven't played at least one Blizzard title. Many of my friends play either WoW or Starcraft, and I don't know a single person that has had issues with bnet dropping connections. This is entirely new to me.

Well, many of the players buying D3 have battle.net accounts already because they play WoW, Starcraft or one of their other many titles. The battle.net accounts have been in play for years now, so, it's really nothing new.

 

Yes and no. With StarCraft 2, Battle.net accounts and internet access were mandatory to play even the single-player game. No LAN play, no offline play, and no hosting your own server if you want--everything, good and bad, goes through Battle.net. Problem is, Battle.net is suspect and is prone to dropping even the best of connections, and I have a feeling that Diablo will tax Battle.net even further.

 

As far as the real world money and micro transaction things, I'm not really that bothered by it. Players won't be forced to use real money. And although other players will obviously have a gear advantage because they're using real money, Blizzard didn't do this just because they felt like it. Players wanted the option to use real money in the game. WoW is rampant with people buying gold with real money, which is strictly against the WoW license agreement. Blizzard is listening to what a lot of their fan base has asked for, which is real life money converting into virtual money.

 

Last I heard, auctions were going to be for real local (to the player) currency, and not funny money or credits. Even if they changed this, the auction houses are rife with profiteering and farmers in WoW--why would we think it would be any different in Diablo 3?

 

Also, here's a Kotaku article on the real-money auction houses and how Blizzard will be taking a significant portion of profits from auction houses. This move has that a*****e Bobby Knotnick's fingerprints all over this.

 

As for Torchlight 2, I'm looking forward to it more than Diablo 3. LAN play, offline play, four player co-op, and the first game was excellent. Plus, Torchlight 2 ($19.99) is 1/3 of the cost of Diablo 3 ($59.99)--hell, Steam is running a special where you can buy four licenses for Torchlight 2 for $60, and they throw in a license for the first game for free.

 

Frankly, I'll just stick with Torchlight 2 and save myself the money and grief that draconian DRM brings itself. More power to you if you can power through such nonsense.

Eh. The online connection thing is going to become more and more prevalent on PC to combat piracy. And while somewhat annoying, far from a deal breaker for me. Unless there ends up with issues not allowing me to play my single player game, then I may change my thoughts some.

 

The auction house is irrelevant to me. I do not plan to play online with strangers, and I do not plan on buying anything from the auction house either. Seeing as D3 can be played through repeatedly without ever needing to play with random people, I don't have the strong feelings about it, it simply does not change things the way it does in an MMO.

 

I do plan on buying it, probably going to use a Monk or Demon Hunter first off.

For those of you who have been following it, any idea what class you're going to play yet? I've decided on Witch Doctor.

I'm up in the air between Monk and Demon Hunter. I played a little on that stress test weekend a couple weeks back. I always have a hard time playing pure casters, so not sure how much I'll get into the Wizard or Witch Doctor.

For those of you who have been following it, any idea what class you're going to play yet? I've decided on Witch Doctor.

I played Witch Doctor in the beta. I didn't get to play any other classes, but the Witch Doctor was really fun to play. You could only get up to like level 5, so that limited what you could or couldn't do. I really enjoyed the Necromancer from Diablo 2 and there seemed to be a lot of parallels between them. I'll probably start off with the Barbarian class. Classic hack and slash style.

The Diablo series isn't appealing to everyone, but neither is every game. It's a complicated game with a deep history, extreme character build depth and ridiculous amounts of content. It's not like Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, or even a sports game, where you can jump right in, herp-derp on buttons and be relatively successful. Now, I'm not saying you're unintelligent if you don't like this game, but it definitely takes a certain kind of gamer. It's really for someone that is looking for a lot out of their game, more than just 30 hours of game time and then some online play. People who play the Diablo series are in it for the long haul.
