HSKRNOKC
if Beck is anything like we hoped, he will outplay Taylor next spring and will start..afterall he was the #3 QB in his class.....he SHOULD win the job next year hunter Maybe so. Time will tell. Quote Link to comment
Huskrz65
[off topic] You guys need to tune into the ISU-CU game on FSN[/off topic] Carry on with the redshirt controversy. BTW...ISU 10 CU 0 Quote Link to comment
huskerhonk
Folks, I was at the game today, and there were a lot of people wondering about burning the redshirt. I say give it a rest. It was nice to see what the kid had in a situation that would show us what he is made of. He didn't look too bad, and he didn't look like a workd beater, either. But he stood in there, and helped us win a pretty important game today. We got him and Freeman through the elite quarterback acadamy, remember? We'll continue to have those chances every year!! GBR!!! Quote Link to comment
DaveH
It's a tough call. On one hand, if Beck IS the #2 guy then he needs to be on the field in Taylor absense. It would be dumb to put Ganz out there just to save the redshirt. If Callahan put Ganz in, to me that would have put the message out there that NU wasn't interested in winning the game by intentionally not putting their best foot forward. In the other hand, you have his true freshman redshirt. The coveted 5th year of eligibility. The probability that Beck will take a redshirt any other year but this one is infantesimal. Tough call, tough situation. I would have tried to save the redshirt considering it is so far into the season. He helped win the game today, although with that INT he could have lost it as well. Hell, it couldn't have been any worse than Davis's outing at TTech last year. Quote Link to comment
Hunter94
good points Dave.......no doubt, tough call.....damned if he did, damned if he didn't hunter Quote Link to comment
Bigjake17
Get his feet wet. Why not? He has to have gained confidence with the final outcome. Does everyone forget about Freeman. We should be able to keep getting the QB s.Its not like Beck is the only Qb we are ever going to get. Quote Link to comment
TheKiD
We were in a close game... Beck worked his way to number 2 on the depth chart.. We had to put someone in there. And from what BECK himself said, it doesn't sound like he was upset by getting the game time. I think he showed some great poise out there. He got thrown into the 'lions den' so to speak. Yes he was shakey, yes he threw the INT. But, IMHO if our receiver had come back to the ball.. that INT wouldn't have happened. It's tough to get any kind of rhythm being that your first snaps come in the 4th quarter of a very close game. And also, he did make the play when it counted. He threw a nice ball, and even got hit pretty good for an extra 15 yards with Roughing the Passer. That is the bottom line, he made the play when he had to. Quote Link to comment
huskerguy
My take on this is, BC put in who he thinks is the second best QB we have. I'm 100% behind the decision becuase we can't look 4 years down the road. We need to play to win the game and worry about 4 years from now when it comes. Quote Link to comment
Huskrz65
Callahan confronted Beck earlier this week about the chance of burning his redshirt if Taylor were to go down. Beck responded by saying not only yeah, but HELL YEAH! The kid want's to play. Beck's Postgame Interview Quote Link to comment
DJR313
Why Beck? A winning season, that's why. That's what was on the line. Disagree. It didnt seem to matter much last year. Yeah, because Beck was standing on the sidelines last season. Quote Link to comment
DJR313
My thoughts. It's too bad that it happened so late in the season. I mean, I never wanted to see Taylor go down like that, it is just unfortunate that it happened. Why Beck? A winning season, that's why. That's what was on the line. And although Beck did throw an INT, he still made a clutch throw to put NU in position to win. Would Ganz do the same? We'll never know. Perhaps Ganz would have thrown two INT's to seal the teams fate. Whether the call by Callahan was perceived as right or wrong really doesn't matter anymore. It was done. Beck gained confidence in his game play, was put in a very stressful situation and prevailed. (Imagine his stomach as he trotted out to take his first snap in live action.) The kid will be pumped for a while and I am sure there are many people in Lincoln that will reinforce his actions on the field today. Congrats Harrison. Well Done! I agree with you here. It's basically pure speculation as to if NU would have made it past KSU with Ganz in there. Who knows? Beck is #2 on the depth chart, meaning he is the second best quarterback on the squad. #1 goes down. You put your best guy in, which would be #2. What if this happened in the 6th or 7th game of the season? Would people feel better about him burning his redshirt then? You play your best players in order to win the game. Many of you criticizing Callahan for putting Beck in also say that if he goes 5-6 that he should be gone next season. Newsflash: Perhaps if Ganz goes in instead of Beck, we lose and lose to CU and go 5-6. Callahan gets fired for not winning because he was trying to shelf his next best QB because the fans wanted to see him start for 3 full seasons. By this logic it seems as if you almost want the team to fail so Callahan will be gone. He did what some of you bozos harped on last season as "not using what you have to play to win". Playing of the true freshman is a major reason that NU won today. Quote Link to comment
ghubbster
I just wanted to post a message to all of you who said I was an idiot for thinking that BC would play Beck at this point in the season. I guess you were wrong. I wish the game was televised so we could have got a better look at Beck, but oh well Instead we were able to watch KU for a half and then that game was dropped... I am glad Beck got some reps this game and will be a little more comfortable in the future if he has to come in and play. I think you should have done it sooner in the season to hopefully take out some of the first game jitters. I had serious doubts that Beck would stay here 5 years anyway if he is as good as they say he is. Especially if the line continues to suck. Special teams were amazing today, now if only the rest of the team could be as consistant as they are we would have something going. Quote Link to comment
Pedro Guerrero
If Beck doesn't care then NONE of us should either. Who cares if former thinks it's a bad idea? I don't. I believe he said it was a bad idea to not redshirt Potter also. How many kicks has that guy blocked. Quote Link to comment
KansasHusker
don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but on beck's interview...that was funny when he was talking about him and callahan discussing his redshirt, and beck replied "hell yes" that it was ok to burn his redshirt...
