Season of missed opportunities

Except that T Mart himself is a walking turnover.

Yeah I ragged on him plenty for this, but it's clear that it's a team problem not just him. It was the same with Zac Lee and the 2009 scoring explosion. And with Ganz to a lesser extent. It's our calling card of the Bo era.

Well the only way to fix the problem is to let the QBs get hit in practice. If I was a football coach, Im not sure Id want my starting QB getting hit all week just to practice hanging onto the football when being tackled.

Well that strategy is clearly working for us.

So if you were a football coach, you'd let your starting QB take hit after hit in practice until he learns to hang onto the football?

I'd let him get hit enough. I'd also make everyone on offense run every time the ball hit the ground. If you don't focus on it, it won't get fixed.

And the other guys that played were a lot better? Not to mention the fact that he was much better in limited action this year.

And Martinez can make a lot more things happen by himself than anyone else we have.

No, obviously the turnovers are a team wide issue.. But you listed to's as a large contributor to us failing to do as well as we should have and went on to say they would not have been a huge issue with our experienced qb at the helm.. I am not sure that you can say that in that tmart led the nation in turnovers..

Tmart brings more to the table than the backups for sure but at no point would you be comfortable in saying that you trust him completely to not make mistakes that cost a game or 2 either. He was never going to be solidly consistent.

But you're still ignoring the fact that it's entirely possible that it would have been better with Martinez than what we ended up with. Martinez had three turnovers in four games. One was a fumble on fourth down when he was short and tried to reach to get the first. Another was late in the Minnesota game that we'd already lost. So two of his three were basically inconsequential.

Martinez three two interceptions in four games. The other two threw 10 in eight games.

Martinez lost one fumble in four games. Not sure about the other two but it was the same rate if not worse.

We might not have been great. But we definitely could have been better. And in three games - UCLA, Michigan St. and Iowa - field position and turnovers played a HUGE role.

There is video evidence of Ron Brown emphasizing ball control and punishing the running backs for fumbles during fall camp. If you choose to ignore that evidence, that is on you.

This happens everywhere. Last I checked it was our QB that led the nation in fumbles 3 straight years. Brown is the only guy on this staff other than Fisher that I'd keep.

I would bet any amount of money that they emphasized ball control with the QBs and ran drills to help them hold onto the ball. But like I said, until you get hit, its not the same. And idk if Id be willing to risk the health of my starting QB. Especially in-season when he needs to heal up during the week.

Go ahead and rip me apart for what I'm gonna say, I'm a huskerboard member, I'm pretty used to it...

I'm gonna look back on the season as the season of what could have been. Going into this season, there was alot of hope. We had an offense that was looked upon as one of the best in recent years. A schedule that was the most favorable since being in the B1G. The only real question was the defense.

Without the multitude of injuries, this season could have been a 2 or even a 1 loss season. Thats one of the two things that were two of the contributing factors to the current situation. The other was turnovers. Part of that was inexpirience at the QB position, which wouldn't have been as big an issue, without the injury to T-Mart.

What was the biggest question mark at the beginning of the season ended up being the strength of this team. The offense although reminded us of the 09 and 10 seasons, where fantastic defenses were wasted by lackluster offenses. Week to week you didn't know what you were going to get offensively.

Going forward, the turnover problem needs to be fixed, or getting to a CCG becomes increasingly more difficult. Is there room for recruiting, absolutely, but recruiting now is more difficult than 20 years ago.

The next 10 months is going to suck. The anti Bo crowd is going to continue to grumble, while the pro Bo crowd is going to rally against them.

I am of neither camp. I'd like to think I'm apart of a small group that just wants to see this team win.

I'm right there with you.

I will concede that we may have been slightly better. Obviously we will never know and it is neither here nor there. I watched us barely beat Wyoming and knew as I left the stadium it would be a long long season. Hard to imagine lighting the world on fire with the team that played in that game. The Minnesota loss sits squarely on the fact that we did have tmart, although a shell of tmart. Had we started a back up that game I feel we would have won, so flip that game when debating wins and losses due to backups IMO. Add to the fact that I believe some of the younger talent got into games out of sheer Bo desperation, it becomes very cloudy as to where we may have ended up. I may buy into one more win, but I think it's a stretch to say we would have been much further along then that when looking at the struggles we had early season.

We could say we missed opportunities. But you do realize 2 of our wins came on final drives this year with Northwestern and Michigan. Wyoming also almost gave us another loss. So as many opportunities we may have missed, other teams missed some opportunities that could have easily made us 5-7.

So is college football. We missed opportunities, other teams missed opportunities. I don't think it is worth it to look at what could have been. Distorts the truth.

It's true. But when looking toward the future, it's hard to gain a lot of confidence from those games. We want to point out the ways things could have been better, well then we better acknowledge how close they were to being a hell of a lot worse.
