I read the OP to mean that the media likes to report on inciteful, decisive topics, despite the potential for the story to spin out of control and cause friction between groups. I think this is true. Big Media only cares about ratings. Regardless of the cause and effect of the story.

 

And by cause and effect, I'm not talking about some idiot PR executive losing her job. In the present situation I'm referring to the media creating a feeling that mainstream whites are prejudiced towards African blacks.
