mcouch44
First time poster here. Just wanted to get some input on this years defense. Seems like things are looking really promising both on the line and in the secondary. So do we think the Blackshirts of the Crick and Suh era are back? 3 Quote Link to comment
The King
No because our DL depth is pretty short especially at DE, with Keels and Natter being an unknown. Hell, we just heard that Collins was moved to DE just for extra reps. Corner is still pretty slim and inexperienced. We'll see how Cockrell and Mosley react. Davie coming back would be huge, but that's not gonna happen. The middle of our defense is pretty formidable, young, and set for the future with S, LB, and DT. In sum, our 2 deep is solid enough to be a top 10 defense. Our top 3/4 guys (in case of injury) are not. But we are clearly on the right track, especially athletically. Quote Link to comment
ADS
It could be decent, but not 2009 or 2010 good just yet. Quote Link to comment

I just can't wait to see Rose and Gregory this year. Gerry at safety too, his natural position. Quote Link to comment
Landlord
It could be decent, but not 2009 or 2010 good just yet. With a good offseason I think we can be just as salty as the 2010 defense. We've got athletes across the board and our secondary has been pretty damn solid every year, even 2011/2012 with a non-existent pass rush. Quote Link to comment

That 2010 secondary was basically an NFL unit, not sure any of the corners are on the same level as Prince or Fonzie right now. Not saying they won't be soon. 2 Quote Link to comment

I think LeRoy and Corey Cooper essentially have those positions locked down at the moment. Rose and Gregory are obviously beasts. But so is Banderas. And I wouldn't count out Charles Jackson or Jonathan Rose either. Just amazing athletes. Quote Link to comment

But you're right, Gerry will come into his own in the next few years hopefully. Anxious to see Banderas too and his athleticism is off the charts. Quote Link to comment
TheSker
I've always believed the DL is the key to a defense. In the 90's, we had NFL talent at all four spots of the DL. During the Suh/Crick time, we had the two of them. I'm not as concerned about depth......if we have NFL talent across our DL, we'll be fine. Quote Link to comment
Redux
Banderas is a beast, think hes gotalot of promise. The corners scare me a bit, wish we couldve gotten a JUCO transfer to fill a spot. Quote Link to comment

I'm going to agree and disagree with a couple of things here. I agree that our defense most likely will not be as good as 2009, but it could be top 20 which is good enough. I disagree that we won't be as good because of depth issues on the d-line. We had basically no depth in 2009 on the d-line. Suh and Crick played virtually every snap of every game that year. We may not be super deep, but we are definitely deeper than that year. We were very deep and very solid in the secondary in 2009 that was a strength. We may not be that deep in the secondary. ericdolph
I look forward to the defense this season as well. Most of the younger guys have some decent experience from last year and the dline will wreak some more havoc. Hopefully our O improves on turnovers while putting up some early leads against the tougher teams allowing the D to play with a more aggressive approach. Bo's defenses can be scary good when we rush the passer well. Quote Link to comment

Although, I could see us having a stronger rush defense than 2010. That front seven was basically Crick and Lavonte. Two great players, but they couldn't be everywhere at once. Only Suh could. Our 2010 secondary was loaded with talent, but even when they haven't all been future NFL picks, our secondary has still performed pretty admirably, and we should have the athletes and depth on the front 7 to help them out even more.
