Seems legit.

DEBBIE:

"Why do you live in such a nice apartment and have such a fancy car?"

DESI:
"I... am an escort. I get paid to go out on dates.
But only three to five times a year. Ten times max.

But it's not technically "prostitution" because I don't have to sleep with them."

DEBBIE:
"Well, that's good."

DESI:
"But I always do. That's why I only do it four to eight times a year, fifteen times max."

DEBBIE:
"Huh."

DESI:
"One year I did it twenty."

DEBBIE:
"As long as you think it's safe."

DESI:
"It's safe. I only do it ten to thirty times a year."

Was thinking about this today.

Another thought. If your current environment was driving you nuts would you go somewhere else and take a pay cut?

I don't have personal experience with this, but I can share someone else's story.

While on my flight back from vacation earlier this week, I sat next to a coworker of my girlfriend's mom. She told me about how she used to be an administrator for a fairly prominent Nebraska organization and loved the work she did and the people she worked for/with. However, after spending years with that company, she ended up not liking the direction the company was going, the way her bosses treated her, or the changes they were making in work flow. Also, as an administrator, she was responsible for hiring and firing some people and it was a challenge she really didn't enjoy.

So, one day, despite her husband telling her not to, she up and quit. Didn't have anything else lined up and it was a well paying job. She just couldn't take it any more.

Within a few months, she got connected with my girlfriend's mom (who hired her) to do a similar job but in more of an assistant capacity. Now, she loves her job and loves coming to work, but she is making less money.

My take away from her story is that money matters, but ultimately, being happy is what really can make the most difference. Being unhappy at a job hurts your professional and personal life, and I'm going through something similar with my current place of profession. You gotta find the right fit somewhere and that may mean taking a risk. My line of work involves constant turnover and people always searching for jobs, so since you are employed, perhaps now is the best time to begin a heavy job search.

So a prostitute makes more money than me, a teacher with 37 years of experience. Any word on how much a 58 year old gigolo makes?

True but unlike with your job, prostitute pay goes down as they age and I'm guessing most retire by the time they're 30 and then they're screwed. (get it??)

I've avoided this question on purpose but I really have to wonder why would a person put themselves in the predicament of not having income on purpose. Stupid move if you ask me. Hey, I totally get that an existing job may suck ass and that a change needs to be made. Fine. Get the replacement job secured THEN quit. I really have to wonder how lazy a person is being that can't make that simple, logical step before quitting. Unless you are independently wealthy and don't need income, why would you even consider such a thing? Is somebody else going to put food on your table and pay your bills when you don't find that new job? Grow up.

Or people need to learn to create income without a job and actually run their own life.

Run their own business. There are tons of different possibilities, such as franchises, new start-ups, or home based businesses. All three can have relatively low overhead which means relatively low risk, and in the case of home based businesses, extremely high reward if done correctly. With those, you just have to be willing to withstand a temporary loss of esteem from some people around you. Key word temporary.

That's not "creating income without having a job." Running a business is the business owner's job. Making $ playing poker for a living is a job. Studying stock market behavior and making $ that way is a job.

I would have to mostly agree with this. Running a business is a job (trust me- I know) and a person could quit or sell their business just like an employee could quit their job. Both situations there would be a loss of income. One of the biggest misconceptions I've seen about running a business is that the owner doesn't have a "boss" and can basically do whatever the hell they want. False. My customers are my boss and I have to do the tasks that keep my business making money. I suppose a person could own a company and not be actively involved in it's operation. i.e. pay somebody else to manage the business for them. I would consider that an investment and, in that case, not having to actively do anything for the income.

The only way to make money without being actively involved in the "making" would be through investments. Thus why I originally said unless a person is "independently wealthy".
