Barfknecht: Husker A.D. owes fan base face time after worst loss in 60 years

A guy can’t even stretch his legs these days and get away from jokes about Nebraska football.

I wasn’t more than 10 steps out of my car during a pit stop on the way to Saturday’s Maryland-Iowa game when I heard three men in Hawkeye jackets yucking it up about the Huskers falling behind Purdue 14-3 in the second quarter.

“At least Nebraska is down to only three problems,” one said. “Offense, defense and special teams.”

Even the lady walking her dog nearby grinned at that oldie but goodie.

Nebraska fans need to grin and bear it. Flak flies when your team hasn’t been beaten by an opponent this bad in 60 years.

You read that right. You have to go back to 1955 to find a worse team the Huskers fell to than Purdue...

NU coach Mike Riley will dutifully conduct his Monday press conference as usual, gracefully owning the mess this season has become. The person who needs to show up at the podium but won’t amid this historically ugly time is Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst. The million-dollar man needs to earn some of that loot by facing the music on his rapid-fire hire of Riley last December.A true leader in times of trouble speaks to the body politic, takes questions from the people’s representatives (the press) and offers insight into the current situation and comfort for the future. Apparently, Eichorst is too busy assigning his coaches books to read or burying them in legalese and paperwork on how to run their camps and clinics. The frustration level among the troops is growing. Eichorst has already broken his personal policy once about never commenting on a coach or results during a season. It’s time to break it again. Riley deserves some relief in explaining this.

Eichorst has already broken his own policy once for his hire, I expect he'll do it again.

Remember just a few weeks ago when he said Riley had a 90% approval rating.

So, this guy is basically saying that Eichorst needs to come out from under his rock?...

...from who have we heard that before? :devil

+1 for stellar emoticon use.

Can we all just agree that we aren't going to do this anymore? Canning Pelini, justly, and hiring Riley are two different things. One was a correct decision, and the other was not.

I completely agree with you on the canning Pelini / hiring Riley thought. It drives me crazy when people act like we had to fire Pelini or hire Riley. We had lots of options as far as who we hired, but apparently didn't look at any of them.

In my mind, Pelini forced Nebraska to fire him, so I'm not one of those guys that could even envision him here this year.

This also isn't about Riley being hired or fired.

This is about Eichorst getting up, getting out, and doing HIS job.

Because itt is possible for someone to:

  • Think Pelini's time to move out had come
  • Think Riley should get more time
  • Think Eichorst needs to put on Big Boy AD pants and engage the people who make it possible for him to draw a paycheck.

This is the part that drives me crazy too. I just can't imagine that SE had a short list of replacements if/when he canned Bo and that Riley was first on that list...

Well, you won't get any arguments from me on bullets one and three. I am unsure on two.

My take on two is that one can't stop the roller coaster in mid-loop and safely exit, no matter how much we would like to do so. Sometimes one has to ride it out, even though we can't stop screaming like little girls and we threw up on ourselves and we aren't even to the scary part yet.

Keep clinging to that. But firing pelini, similarly to firing Solich, just guaranteed being relegated to a coach like Callahan or Riley.

You don't fire a solid coach unless you know you have an upgrade in line

I think it's only fair that he get's more time. If a third of the roster was walk ons, then we have to at least let him have a chance to compete with a full deck. In order to get rid of Riley after this season, we would have to admit that he was a bad choice to begin with and that would lead to Eichorst getting fired. With Perlman stepping down this summer, I just don't think logistically it's possible to hire a new chancellor, AD, and football coach in time for next season. So I am taking the cup is 1/10 full attitude and hoping that he will get things turned around.

The 1/3 of the roster is walkons is just another lie in the propaganda machine run by revisionists who tore Frank down to justify an awful '04 (which sadly isn't looking that bad anymore) and now set its sights on Bo as the scapegoat.

Want to provide some context on that number? Like how it compares to rosters during the past 7 years? Or over our history?

Is it something that we can really believe will change? Even in 2008, when recruiting was supposedly humming under Callahan, 10 of the 2-deep were walkons.

Certain fans will now tear down our walkon tradition to excuse a sub .500 coach doing what sub .500 coachs do.
