Sipple: NU Leadership Must Get on Same Page

Of course, there is hope. But based on what I've heard, witnessed and reported for the past 14 seasons, Nebraska's return to elite status will be dependent largely on university leaders getting on the same page. I'm talking mostly about the head coach, athletic director, president, chancellor and regents.

Imagine Husker football with those folks pushing in the same direction. It perhaps seems difficult to fathom, it's been so rare. Too often since late 2002 — when Steve Pederson was hired as athletic director essentially to fire Frank Solich — there's been internal strife of some sort.
Here we go again.
Current Nebraska coach Mike Riley, athletic director Shawn Eichorst and lame-duck Chancellor Harvey Perlman are on the same page. But Perlman isn't exactly a popular figure with the regents, and it's no secret Eichorst has limited support among the upper-level administration — in part because he's created a stifling Pederson-esque corporate management structure.
It frankly gets old, all the politics.
People ask all the time: What's happened to Nebraska football? It's a gross oversimplification to point to only the coaching element. The downturn also has been the result of university leaders failing to maintain a strong overall vision for the program.
Since 2002, tumult has been present to a degree that once seemed unfathomable, with Perlman presiding all the while. He hasn't been the only problem, mind you, but he's been a common denominator. He has the unprecedented distinction of presiding over the firing of three football coaches. A fourth has Nebraska sitting at 3-6 — matching the Huskers' worst record through nine games since 1960.
Based on numerous interviews and conversations, it's clear upper-level university leadership once again lacks alignment and vision. So, once again, a Husker head coach must prepare for a formidable opponent while leadership above him weighs down the operation.

Gonna repeat what I put in another thread.

Listening to the Husker Online podcast last night while working out, and they were not exactly thrilled with Harvey and Shawn. It's not like they're wanting Bo back either. These guys have made it known that they saw alot of shortcomings under Bo, and haven't shied away from blaming relevant issues on him either, all while doing alot of praising of Riley and Co during the offseason for how they handled things. They didn't even discuss the current product on the field in relation to the AD and Chancellor either, they were just appalled at the lack of professionalism and timing displayed by the two had guys. Sean Callahan said that Harvey doing a OWH interview where he was discussing recruiting and trashing the former coaches was bizarre and extremely ill-timed. His comment was something along the lines of Harvey knowing less about recruiting than any coach or assistant on the staff, ever. They also took Eichorst to task for his complete 180 on "commenting during the season" and the weirdness of releasing the statement of support right before Riley went on for his PC on Monday.

I have been screaming at the top of my lungs for the last 10 years about this exact thing.

Finally... someone else is telling the truth.

H Perlman needs to be stripped of ALL FOOTBALL related responsibility as of right now... today... this minute.

Everyone listed above needs to be fired including the board... they have stood by and watched this unfold and done NOTHING ! They can not now be allowed to pretend they can fix this. They can't, they are just as much the problem as the rest.

These bozo's have SQUANDERED THE FRANCHISE.

So, why doesn't it go one step further. Let's just get rid of all the Regents as well. The band aid needs to be ripped off clean and thru.

I almost feel a little jealous of Penn State. They certainly had their band aid ripped off. And got to have a fresh start through it all. It's unfortunate how it all went down, but at least it happened, and they can move on. And they are rebuilding that entire program, and they will be back soon, very soon.

Texas is going through the same thing we are. The folks that have a death grip on the past will not let go, and let the program move into the 21st century. The people that are trying to bring it into the 21st century are beaten mercilessly until they finally give up.

And here we are.

And this comment drives me nuts.

because he's created a stifling Pederson-esque corporate management structure.

That's because it's a multi million dollar corporation. How in the utter hell are they supposed to manage it????!?!??!?!?

You can't effectively manage a multi million dollar corporation using the good ole boy network. Ask Enron how that turned out. (or ask Penn state how that worked out)

So what, as fans, can we actually do to get the board and President to step up and stop this train wreck?

Well, if you live in Nebraska you can at least vote for the Board. Though having what they do about the football team is probably not the best criteria to consider.

Where's the evidence of this? I thought Eichorst's big thing was "positivity." Maybe Sipple is referring to his pal Pelini- whose negativity was permanently stifled.

does anyone have any more gas to throw on this fire?

Here. The regents are NOT taking precaution regarding Perlman's imminent, premature Eichorst contract extension. (same owh article that mostly discusses and quotes Perlman talking like a lawyer ;) ) Sounds like all involved are spinning stupidity and deception.

http://www.omaha.com/huskers/nu-chancellor-perlman-backs-mike-riley-and-shawn-eichorst-despite/article_dc706163-16a4-5a59-8704-815f2c320110.html

...Another regent, Board Vice President Kent Schroeder, watched Nebraska’s 55-45 loss to Purdue from the sideline but said he doesn’t make broad comments about the success or failure of any football program, be it 3-6 Nebraska or 0-9 UNK, which also has a first-year coach.

“I’m not elected to coach football or hire and fire coaches and A.D.s,” said Schroeder, referring to consternation surrounding Eichorst’s performance. If the Board of Regents were to appear overly concerned with matters traditionally reserved for campus chancellors, Schroeder said, requests to regents would be “never-ending.”

Daub said perception of overwhelming oversight from the Regents could result in a “chilling effect” when it came to hiring future coaches and athletic directors.

The World-Herald requested an interview with new NU President Hank Bounds, but a spokeswoman said his schedule made him unavailable for comment early in the week.

Perlman’s decision to seek an extension for Eichorst will be controversial with some fans.

Eichorst is in the third year of a five-year contract. Perlman didn’t release the terms of the proposed extension but said among the details being worked out — at Eichorst’s urging — is the elimination of traditional perks such as cars and country club memberships so that it’s clear all dollars donated to the athletic department go toward student-athletes.

Perlman said Eichorst’s work to heighten the experience for both fans and student-athletes has been less noticed by fans. He thinks Nebraska now offers its athletes the best package of athletic and academic support of any school in the country. That will position Nebraska to recruit well in the future in all sports.

“I intend to get this done quickly,” Perlman said of Eichorst’s extension.

How much NU cash did Perlman piss away with his idiotic extensions of Pedie and Cally?
