Why recruiting matters, and the importance of signing day

As CM Husker mentions, when the stars align, all that talent, scheme and coaching can become a dynasty.

Which won't last forever, either.

When the stars align in other ways, teams with less perfect credentials can have a magical season.

Winning tends to begat winning, and for the moment Nebraska still benefits from its long legacy. Coach up a middling recruiting class, create an atmosphere that things are happening in Lincoln, and the recruiting classes will likely get a bump in stars.

And as Cornographic mentions, sometimes a single player makes all the difference in the world. Until he graduates.

Well, Aub DID have a number of 4* guys on that team, but a big time difference maker @ QB can work wonders for any team.

Auburn went 8 - 5 the year after Cam graduated.

3 - 9 the year after that.

Then 12 - 2.

Then 8 -5 again.

It's not a perfect system.

Yeah, evrybody thought Malzahn was going to take the world by storm after the 12-2 w Marshall, then they've kind of disappeared. Weird. Well, their QB deal this year sucked, the guy couldnt pass to save his life. QB is of ultimate importance. Which brings me back to TA. I'm watching now on YT our game vs Rutgers last season as I didnt get to see it live. We're up 21 zip and rolling, then TA decides, as usual, to start airmailing up floatation devices and singlehandedly trying to give the game away again. I swear, he lost us most of the games we lost, with the INTs. Good Tommy, bad Tommy. The guy has got to get it together this year.

QB is the ultimate in players. A game changing QB can turn a very average team into a great team. NU just hasn't had a game changing QB since Eric Crouch. Though I would say that Taylor Martinez was looking like one until he got hurt against Missouri in his freshman year. A Marcus Mariotta, Cam Newton, Jaimis Winston can make all the difference in the world.

There are rare QB talents like those mentioned above, and then there are the guys who are just really competent, consistent and don't make mistakes. Those guys can win you championships, too. Like the QBs at Alabama whose names you forget.

Of coarse the really competent QB more often than not are the ones winning championships. I am just saying that a great QB can really change a team and make it way better than the sum of its parts. In 2001 NU doesn't almost run the table without Crouch. Auburn doesn't even sniff the NC without Newton.

That's what is said almost every other year as well until their RBs go onto the NFL and do little to nothing. With Bama', it all starts with the D and the OL. They will see little if any drop off rushing the ball next year even though they don't have their Hypseman RB back. A lot of their skill players on offense are plug and play. There is little drop off from the #1-#3's.

Helps when the rest of the roster is made up of 4 and 5* guys.

Well, they beat Clemson with homeruns from the TE, RB, WR, and punt return. When your TE is 5* and faster than most DBs, it helps.

Alabama has signed... 15 elite (4 and 5 star) players today. 5 of the fifteen... are 5 star players.

Florida State has signed 19 elite (4 and 5 star) players today.

Ohio State has signed 17 elite (4 and 5 star) players today.

Michigan has signed 16 elite (4 and 5 star) players today.

Clemson has signed 13 elite (4 and 5 star) players today. 3 are 5 star players.

You get the picture.

What was Michigan's recruiting class ranked last year?...50th.... and they signed only 6 elite players last year.

That's the difference hiring an elite-winning-great recruitng coach makes.
