Are there more good teams but fewer great teams in college football right now?

yes. But i think it's weird in how we label it. If Alabama is great-or the playoff teams are great-and other teams in the top 20 or whatever it is, are good, then yes.

Obviously this in regards to a very high level of parity. I think the talent-both player and coaching- being so spread out due to the across-the-board investment in the sport by pretty much everyone, on top of the insane levels of expectation and urgency, has actually watered down the sport some. I think if you really wanna look at it, it's actually a few great teams and the rest are average. i dont think there is an in between anymore. When you have Michigan beating Penn ST by 30, Penn st beating Ohio St, but losing to Pitt, who also beat Clemson, and Wisconsin losing to Ohio St by one score, beating Nebraska by one score in the same scenario, yet Ohio St lays 60 on Nebraska, well, it's so even across the board. I know transitive property is bogus, but only in a sense of trying to predict what may happen in a particular game. Transitive property is an accurate depiction of the evenness of the sport. It supports the case of parity. and I dont think it's cuz so many others have raised their game. it's that the greats have been brought down some. It really is as unpredictable as pro sports now. Anyone can beat anyone. Literally. And even this year, as great and unbeatable as Bama is, 5-7 Ole miss almost beat em, and were up and down the field on this defense. So Bama needs to win these last two before being annointed.

Definitely more good teams. A lot more.

Great teams? Tough to say. Depends on your reference point. It was a lot easier for probably 10-12 teams to be significantly better than most other teams 20-30 years ago. Now that number is probably 5-6 and seems to shift around from year to year a lot more than previously. So I would say there are fewer great teams relative to the competition they faced now than there used to be.
