BigRedBuster
Being a foodie, I found this interesting. How many have you had? I'm at 34. And...actually most of them in the states that they represent. 2 Quote Link to comment
Ulty
Surprised to see that many of the foods on this list are not really unique to a specific state. I see a lot of these kinds of list that have some sort of obscure dish that you might not even be aware of outside a particular region. This list is more... accessible might be the right word? For example, Iowa's dish is dry cured bacon. Georgia is peach cobbler. Even though Georgia is associated with peaches, I've never eaten a piece of cobbler in Georgia, but I've eaten many peach cobblers in my life. I've eaten many pork tenderloin sandwiches in Nebraska and Iowa, but not in Indiana. Anyway, I've had 36 on this list, and reading it made me hungry. Whittling it down eating the specific dish in the specific state listed, I'm only at 13. Quote Link to comment

Specifically, the "Runza" itself (I think there are some other names for it like krautburger, or perhaps cabbage burgers like you're referencing?) I personally don't think they taste good, but, I primarily think they're unsophisticated, dull, and lacking in character. I sort of get the popularity, though - the "Runza" is fast food, relatively simple in concept, and it's got beef in it, so that's A+ as far as a lot of Nebraskans are concerned. I simply wish we were known for something that was more visually appealing with a more complex texture and taste. Bishop's recommendation of the Reuben would certainly get my vote. (For the record, I think the Runza hamburger is a damn good fast food burger, perhaps the best fast food burger in Nebraska.) Quote Link to comment

Being from central Nebraska, I would have gladly picked ham balls. But, those aren't big in the metro areas where someone like this is going to do their investigative reporting. Quote Link to comment

They are very popular in my area and almost everyone we serve them to loves them. My daughter dated a guy in college that begged for the leftovers to take home when they would come to visit.
