  1. Preface, I know very little about specifics beyond social media posts and that the military took over the government and are killing citizens. This might make me a hawk on foreign policy and I understand many in the US aren't interested in foreign intervention anymore after recent screw ups and that is on both sides of the political spectrum. But if anywhere on the planet could use US troops on the ground it is here. One of my old school conservative views that promoting democracy globally is good and backing the people of Myanmar would be good. If resistance leaders want help from us we should give it to them. I think we are just going to generally ignore this b/c it would heat up relations with China. I am rooting for the people fighting for their democracy.
  2. I'd be curious to know how much control over the event Omaha people had vs the NCAA. Omaha usually pulls out the stops for these kind of events and it is disappointing this is turning out to be the outcome. It is kind of insane to me that they are going to rely on the convention center with no lockers when the metro area is loaded with suitable venues. CHI Arena, Sokol on Creighton's campus, and Baxter Arena at UNO all would work. Ralston arena and the arena in Council Bluffs would work too. If need be Devaney or PBA also. We have plenty of facilities with proper lockers and seating/room for broadcast equipment. Just another example of the weak leadership in the NCAA office.
  3. Sorry typed more than I planned hope it isn't a ramble. I went to Catholic school K-12 so I got the exposure to religion. I never really got into it as a kid or teen, I went to mass every week to respect my parents, but when I moved out I stopped going and have only gone on Christmas again b/c my mother wants me to and it is no skin off my back and I never found value in being an argumentative non believer. If the belief system you follow helps connect you to something, helps heal your soul, helps connect you to a community I find that to be a good thing. I try quite hard to keep that same energy when meeting people that truly believe in astrology or other more niche beliefs as well. Who am I to dump on what helps them find peace in the world. I do find myself still identifying "well, I grew up Catholic" here in Omaha when it comes up and I was talking got a lifelong buddy about this recently as he has the same education as me. We kind of came to the conclusion that especially in a city like Omaha where Catholic high schools are fairly common and their grads are often in high level positions across the city that it is a sort of way to try and show status like we belong to the club we have a certain status. I just find it interesting that I always point that out when the topic arises. Yes, I went to Creighton Prep if that wasn't painfully obvious with the status comment. My friend has a young child and told me that even though they haven't practiced in a long time that they are planning on sending him to Catholic school and are strongly considering going to mass regularly not b/c they are believers, but b/c of how growing up in that community helped form him into a decent and successful person and would like his son to have a strong community like the one he grew up in. Not to say that you can't be successful and good going to public school and having no contact with religion obviously b/c that isn't the case. It was an interesting convo I have thought about a bit since. Maybe the value of religion to some people may be more focused on shared morals, shared identity, shared values rather than a strong attachment to a divine being. In a time where more people live alone than ever before people get married later, have kids later. Where reported loneliness is higher than ever. Where things seem more polarized than they have in a long time. I sort of envy those that find community, peace and joy in their beliefs. It can be tough to find your "people" in the world and I think religion helps some with that. I brought this up in an immigration thread about hispanic immigrants moving into small Nebraska cities and towns. A town's mayor was interviewed and he said something to the effect that immigrants being religious helped them become members of the community quicker. "It is hard to hate the family in the pew next to you every Sunday" was the paraphrase comment. Something like religion a shared belief and value system helped to defuse prejudice and hate. It can't be all that bad. I guess that is my general atheist experience. Probably fall closer to an agnostic I suppose.
  4. They are screwed. However you view the incident in terms of second chances or whatever it is a complete killer for McDermott's recruiting going forward. It is a hell of a risk for them to move forward with him at this point. I am sure former players do really trust that he is a decent man despite his comment, but they had years with him to get to know him. Idk how he talks to a 17 year old you don't know and make any connection with them to convince them to join the program.
  5. So these groups were morally fine with scheduling their events months ago and inviting people from all over the place to meet for a convention then travel back home, but the mask thing which they could have told their attendees to adhere by was the straw that broke their back? Seems like a good way to try and get out of a financial agreement where your attendance was going to be terrible and bail on your block of rooms.
  6. Just as an aside from an event late in this game I want the wedgie rule changed. If you shoot a shot that poor and it gets lodged it shouldn't go to who has the arrow. The other team gets it outright.
  7. Just saw Utah hired Craig Smith from Utah St. The guy is a heck of a coach, has found success at South Dakota and Utah St since he left Nebraska. Cool that he got to a P5 job.
  8. Match play can be fun for stuff like this.
  9. Ouch. Might be a blessing for some students that would have taken out too much debt, but there is pretty clear evidence higher education directly leads to higher income. Going to be a number of consequences for years after Covid is "done" dealing with the disparity of educational outcomes for students that have been in class vs those that are just now starting to reopen.
  10. Here are the other mass shootings in 2021 with at least 4 killed that didn't seem to get the national press of Boulder and Atlanta. Just women and children being shot in their homes nothing to see here. February 2 Muskogee Oklahoma 6 1 7 2021 Muskogee shooting: Five children and one adult were shot and killed, and one other adult suffered life-threatening injuries, after a home shooting in Oklahoma. Jarron Deajon Pridgeon, age 25, was charged with the murders of the victims (his adult brother and five children).[91][92] January 24 Indianapolis (1) Indiana 6[n 2] 1 7 Six people including an unborn baby were killed and a teen was injured in a shooting at a house on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The teen suspect (Raymond Childs III) is currently in custody. [101] January 9 Chicago (1) and Evanston Illinois 6[n 1] 2 8 A shooting that started in Chicago ended in Evanston left five people dead and two injured before the shooter, 32-year-old Jason Nightengale, was shot and killed by police.[113] March 16 Phoenix (3) Arizona 4 1 5 Four people died after a shooting at a home. One man was injured and is expected to survive.[25] March 13 Indianapolis (3) Indiana 4 1 5 Police found a woman who had been shot and learned there may be other victims at a different home. Police arrived at the home and found four dead, including a child.[34] February 28 Cincinnati Ohio 4[n 1] 2 6 A man shot and killed his wife and two others, wounding a fourth. He was later shot and injured by police in Detroit and was taken to a nearby hospital and died days later.[50] [51]
  11. This massive cargo ship is currently stuck in the Suez Canal creating a traffic jam.
  12. I thought the exact same thing as you did, but after Boulder today I decided to look it up. Apparently 2020 was the worst year for mass shootings yet according to how some define the term. That shocked me. This is just off of a quick glance, but it appears there weren't many high profile public shootings last year. I guess a bunch of family muder-suicides and shootings in certain communities generally don't drive the national conversation like others do.
  13. We deserved a 3 to send it to OT in the first game after missing the last tourney.
  14. Your days are numbered SEC football!
  15. Well, the Biden stairs mishap will be the topic for this news cycle.
  16. Bacon voted across the aisle today with 8 other Republicans on a bill to offer Dreamers a pathway to citizenship.
  17. March Madness is back after nearly two damn years!
  18. I worry this is going to be a really really bad year for violent attacks. Murders were already way up last year and as things open up I have a bad feeling that these sorts of incidences will be rather common. Between the political and racial divides we are seeing and the scores of unaddressed mental health issues from the past year's social isolation it all seems like a powder keg for more violence.

  20. Finally got around to Ted Lasso. I agree it is a fun light watch and just generally feel good stuff which is a nice change compared to a lot of stuff now a days that is so heavy. Lots of jokes for sports fans. It does curse quite a bit so probably not great for kids even though the tone of the show is light.
