  1. I believe that a passive 3-4 scheme is not going to consistently beat the type of Wisconsin team that was fielded this year. Their offensive line is one of the best in the country and you'll get chipped for 5+ yards a carry. **EDIT** -- I'm not saying that Frost's DC runs a passive 3-4. inb4 somebody says that. It's really about how the linebackers are used. In an agressive 3-4 scheme with physical linebackers it's a completely different defense. Especially when your corners are lined up closer to the line of scrimmage for run support. I'm not worried about anything right now. I believe Frost has the tactician's mind and (I hope, at least) won't have the stubborn qualities to not adjust if something isn't working. With that said, I've said for three seasons now that we need a defensive coordinator that takes a simple look at what Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, and Wisconsin do in this conference to be successful and tries to duplicate that.
  2. Yeah, **** Herbstreit for doing his job talking logically about college football. It is entirely reasonable to make an argument that Florida and Florida State will always out-recruit us...because it's actual reality.
  3. It can't. If it could or if it did, one of the top 4-5 teams in the conference would be doing it. Running that defense would really be the only thing to take the air out of the Scott Frost sails at this point. Other than that, I'd be totally happy to see the no-huddle spread here.
  4. Awesome stats, @Mavric. Brutally depressing. But really interesting data. As the emotions subside and are hopefully very soon drowned out with the positives of almost undoubtedly bringing in Frost, I can say that it stands to reason that it's hard to judge Diaco's efforts on just one season. But I still say that a passive 3-4 will never work all that well in a run-heavy conference. Your defensive line will constantly be a weak link. I'm so glad to not have to watch another year of a passive 3-4 combined with a secondary that's lined up way too far off the line of scrimmage.
  5. I would have a small sliver of doubt if it happened. It's not crazy. But I'd say it's such a microscopic chance given that Frost could have said "yes" to a huge-money deal at Florida anyway.
  6. But yeah, as far as offense goes, there have been a lot of great posts in this thread. Not a whole lot to add. But it really does look so much like the "basketball on grass" offense of Chip Kelly. It's really entertaining to watch and if it's what he runs, I'll be looking forward to it.
  7. Defense is the concern. Hopefully he'll look at what Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin do to be successful in this conference. Our last two coaches sure didn't.
  8. I'd say it really is a 90% - 95% lock at this point with Frost. Feels so good. So good. I felt pretty nervous on Thursday/Friday when it felt like his agents really would be meeting with Florida, but it's a completely different feeling now.
  9. Totally agree with knapplc's idea on looking to the back of the playbook. And especially on the blitzing. I have a feeling Lee will throw it 60 times.
  10. Exactly. As if he needed to do research at some point with other trusted head coaches and try to figure out where his "practice focus" and "practice intensity" measures up to other successful programs. It doesn't seem that hard to read between the lines and make a relatively fair assumption in saying that Riley probably just kept doing what he'd always done, and therefore got the same results. We all know that our practices in the 90s under Osborne were high intensity. It's well-documented. If you play like you practice, it seems relatively obvious that either Riley or his coordinators just don't have appropriate standards of practice intensity that the average Top 25 program has. How else does Iowa knock off Ohio State? How else does Wisconsin consistently spend the vast majority of every season ranked, and even sniffing the Top 10?
  11. I like this thread, OP. I've kind of been thinking about such a question for several weeks. If I could give Mike a dose of truth serum I'd probably ask him if he believes that his practice time (meaning, all the way from Spring ball through the in-season practices) could be considerably more focused and intense. When we talk about whether or not a college head coach "can develop talent" these days, I think about Wisconsin & Iowa's programs. Aside from coaches that teach sound fundamentals, what other explanation could there really be for the fact that each year Wisconsin rolls out a program that could potentially beat any team in the conference on any given Saturday?
  12. I don't think his coordinators match his level of coaching prowess currently. He's basically had back-to-back seasons where in a really big game his offensive coordinator failed to call enough running plays to play to their strengths and wound up losing because of it.
  13. I'm going to try to force myself to watch Riley's full presser above. But it's going to be tough.
  14. In my opinion it jumped because Florida has already fired their coach. We haven't yet fired our coach. That's probably all there is to it. Frost is coming to Nebraska. I heard it from my caddie's chauffeur.
  15. Perfect candidate for the 'Out of context' thread. /juvenile_comment
  16. It's a fair question. Here's my answer: Armstrong constantly struggled with decision making; not throwing the ball away when he should have, throwing into double coverage when he shouldn't have, etc. He did that for four seasons. I think he did get the benefit of the doubt to a large extent on this forum towards the end of last season with regards to how bad the line was pass blocking so much of the time. But the decision making thing is on the quarterback. Martinez's completion rate his Junior/Senior year was actually surprisingly decent for a not-so-highly-recruited mobile quarterback. During the first 4-5 games of this year, it looked like Lee wasn't even going to come close to Martinez's Junior year numbers. Now of course Lee has started to really turn things around in good ways.
  17. At this point, I think Frost is in fact the best option to us for 2018 provided that whoever the defensive coordinator he brings in closely examines why Bo and Riley have failed to stop the run against ranked teams and fixes those issues.
  18. Just possibly some food for thought. I looked up Notre Dame's recruiting rankings from 2009-2013 according to 247sports: -2009: 15 -2010: 15 -2011: 8 -2012: 17 -2013: 6 We're pretty much nowhere close to the average of those five classes. Pretty huge difference. Couple that with the fact that Brian Kelly's resume (which is maybe a bit subjective, but still) seemingly points to him being a bit better head coach and there's just a pretty obvious gap in the two situations. But, I still think this was a good post to take stock of things, OP.
  19. ...and putting this receiver out onto the field instead of a tight end. I'd like to see him throwing to three wideouts and a slot receiver with no tight end in more of a spread formation with Ozigbo blocking once in a while.
  20. Exactly, +1. Our fan base crapping on Kelly's accomplishments is hilarious. Kelly essentially had three seasons where if his defense was just a little bit better (not a lot better - just a little better), he probably would have walked away with three rings. We love to spout the "defense wins championships" line but even in 2009 & 2010 our NFL-loaded roster didn't put us in the same zip code as Chip Kelly.
