There was an odd dynamic to the UCLA game. Many folks expected UCLA to win. Most didn't expect NU to be up 21-3 on them. When you go to the locker room ahead at the half, your game plan is working. Why would you make big adjustments? You wouldn't... maybe you'd lean toward "protect the lead" strategy, but you wouldn't chamge much. On the inverse, when you are down, on the road like UCLA... you'd make lots of changes, on both sides of the ball. What do you have to lose? UCLA is the better team.

Per KFAB this morining, the suspect list is pretty short. They speculated this was recorded after the post game news conference and before the post game Coach's radio show... during the microphone, recording and pre-airing testing period before Bo's post game radio show went live. Someone purposely saved the recording. There were a few folks there and just a few technical folks. I suspect Sharp's voice is heard best because he was probably already seated behind the radio mic.

Context is, of course, meaningful. That said, there is no context whereby any adult in a position of leadership should function that way. No context justifies that. One more contextual note, after listening- he would have believed his pre-conference comments were off the record. I like his passion, always have.

TO was the best CFB coach of the modern era. Having said that... TO had a couple of monkeys on his back... Barry Switzer and a bowl game losing streak. TO overcame the bowl game losing streak. If you remember, it took a while to do that.

Mora has beaten Nebraska in his first two seasons at UCLA taking over a program that hadn't won more than 7 games since 2005. Billy C won more than 7 games twice in 4 years. I would say Bo's foundation was markedly better than Mora's when he took over and he has had 6 years to get his recruits in the program. Either the foundation doesn't mean very much after all or Bo doesn't have what it takes to win here. This went from comparing apples (TO's NU inheritance) to oranges (BO's NU inheritance) to comparing apples to kumquats. Try to focus on Nebraska.

we didn't used to just win games, we used to punish our competition...that hunger and pride is long gone.... and when NU went down in defeat it used to be fighting all the way and punishing the opponent. Even when NU lost (which was 2 times a year on average) under Osborne --- they went down not because they were unfocused, unmotivated, out-hustled or were lacking in intensity. They were focused, intense, violent, well-prepared and went down against better foes that day. No dishonor in that. If the current NU team was like that... hair on fire intense every play all game irrespective of score --- if they played with focus and were violent, giving all on every play every game and finished with 5 or 6 losses a season I would be satisfied and never complain. The record is not the point. How the team plays --- that is the point. So... under Bo, the point (at least for me) is not that they have failed to be a champion of anything... or that they failed to do well record-wise against good foes. It is that the team has been (and seemingly continues to be) poorly prepared, lacking in drive, non-physical (relative to where they should be), generally non-intense, poorly coached and lacking in focus. That is, to me, a dishonorable way to lose (or win --- as the Wyoming game is an example... NU played w/o intensity, focus or drive but won because their foe was simply wildly over-matched by talent deficit relative to NU). NU picks up some uninspired wins this way... and that is not worth accolades at all. So, when NU lost games under TO, they only lost to "better teams". 1981--#7 NU lost to an unranked Iowa. 1984--#1 NU lost to an unranked Syracuse 1986--#3 NU lost to an unranked Colorado 1990--#10 NU lost to an unranked Oklahoma (by 35) 1992--#7 NU lost to an unranked Iowa State (the ultimate sleep walking loss) 1993--#6 NU goes down to the wire against unranked Kansas (winning when KU missed a 2-pt conversion in last minute of game) 1994--#2 NU almost lost to unranked Wyoming (Benning said the team was not focused for that game) 1997--#6 NU plays Central Florida very close (bringing boos against Scott Frost) Yes, the lack of focus about Bo's teams are concerning, but don't act like NU played every game lights out under Tom Osborne. There are plenty of games under TO, where the team came out flat, and the team had close games or even lost. You listed 8 games from a 25 year career. I can think of 8 games off the top of my head from the last 2 years....hell last year alone.... Actually - it looks like he picked 8 games from 17 years where nebraska was ranked in the top ten and lost to unranked teams. There were others, 1976 #9 NU vs ISU comes to mind. 1972 opener- #1 NU lost to unranked UCLA. 1973 #10 NU tied unranked OK St- even a blowout loss that year 27-0 to OU. 1974 #4 NU lost to unranked Wisky also #5 NU lost to unranked Mizzou 1975- #2 NU blownout 35-10 by OU 1976- #1 NU tied unranked La Tech - #3 NU lost by 10 to Mizzou at home and lost to unranked ISU More examples if you look.

That's great...but Bo used up all of his eligibility, so what he knows takes a back seat to what his players know. So the question becomes can Bo coach football? Bo might be a defensive genius, but it seems he can't coach defense. TO and the current AD seem to disagree. When the AD agrees with you, BO will be gone. That isn't happening. Bo and the program will be fine. It took TO a good number of years and nearly getting canned in the late 70s to get NU back to where he inherited it... a national championship team. Remember when TO couldn't win the big bowl games??

No. The programs foundation is important. If you inherit a program whose foundation was a back to back national championship and went to 8-3 in year 6, you might argue it was going backwards. And some folks wanted TO gone in the late '70s. If you inherit a program whose foundation was poor (Cally) and went to 9 wins or better in year 6, you might argue it was going forwards. And some folks want BO gone...

Yes. Expectations change with time and memory. Today we are more likely to compare our teams to 2005 than 1995. In 1976, TO went 8-3-1 in the regular season. His losses were: 24-34 vs. #17 Missouri, 28-37 at Iowa State, 17-20 vs. #8 Oklahoma. None of the losses were by more than two scores. None of the teams out-gained Nebraska by more than 100 yards. None of the games were decided until late in the fourth quarter. Oklahoma needed a halfback pass and a hook and lateral to beat us near the end of the game. TO later learned that the decision was made to fire him if he lost to #9 Texas Tech in the Bluebonnet Bowl. He won, 27-24. Nebraska finished ranked 9th in the AP and 7th in UPI, with two wins over top 15 teams and three close losses. And one score away from a new head coach. TO inherited a two time national championship team. BO inherifted Cally's team, which also had some blowout losses.

I don't disagree with you, but we could be coming close to the time when shaking things up is more important than stability. You could be right. Do we wait for Pelini to get his 8-9 wins against our cupcake schedule? What's easier, firing an 8-4 bowl bound coach at the end of the season, or firing a 5-4 coach after a beatdown at Michigan? Neither. That isn't going to happen. Michigan almost got beaten by Akron. The huskers WILL win at least 10 games. Have a little faith.

It's going to be a good season, most expected to lose to UCLA, a few even predicted a loss by 15-20 points. Bo will get at least 10 wins and if things go right, who knows, maybe a shot at the BIG title. It's still early. At least you haven't lost to Iowa-- and won't!

Taylor Martinez. IS an Elite QB. What he isn't.... a one man team. He has lightning speed and tons of ability, but he needs help from the defense.

Bo is a good coach and unless he gets a better offer, he ain't going anywhere. And shouldn't. The schedule is favorable, expect at least 10 wins! Bo knows football.

As a head coach job... nothing. If I pretend I'm a head coach looking for a job, OU would be my choice.
