  1. Well, maybe not exactly what you meant but you actually short-changed him.
  2. I heard Kevin Williams and Kevin Maurice may have been hurt. Anybody hearing anything? Williams left early but came back. I saw Stoltenburg playing DT in the 4th so maybe someone was dinged. I noticed Stoltenburg in there quite a bit later in the game as well. Wasn't sure if they were just trying something new of if someone was injured.
  3. The only thing that saved us yesterday was Southern Mississippi apparently has the dumbest Offensive Coordinator in the history of college football. Despite three games showing us to be VERY vulnerable to the deep pass and (now) the #5 QB in the nation in terms of passing yards, he spent the first three quarters calling about the most conservative game plan imaginable. Through the end of the third quarter, they had 20 rushes for 18 yards and 22 passes for 202 yards. Why they continued to run the ball when they were having absolutely no success is mind-boggling. And - by my count - they had only thrown the ball farther than 10 yards downfield three times. They resulted in a 50 yard completion, an incompletion and a pass interference call. Most of their passes were swings and screens - almost nothing testing us down the field. In the fourth quarter he finally got to the part of his playbook that had the deep passing game in it. IN THAT QUARTER ALONE they went 12 for 20 passing for 245 yards and two touchdowns. I have no idea what he was doing the rest of the game but Banker should send him his game check.
  4. Honest question - has anyone actually watched Michigan State play enough to know that we're even ATTEMPTING to run the same types of coverages they are? Or are we just taking someone's word from it from 8 months ago. I am extremely doubtful that this is what they run. But I haven't watched them enough to know.
  5. thats not doable st this point. Were 4 games in. At this point all you can do is make adjustments within your overall philosophy. Or can you? I just cant imagine a system change in the middle of the season would be anything but disasterous. It aint intramurals brotha. It is most definitely do-able. It won't happen but it could be done. What's the worst that could happen - we have trouble adjusting to a new scheme and end up DEAD LAST in the country in pass defense? Whoops.
  6. The 4-3 Cover 4 is what I expected to see when they talked about "Quarters" coverage. But that's not what we are running. We are not running any of those things. We are running either Cover 0 or Cover 1 - we seem to switch back and forth between the two depending on play call. We are not playing zone defense - at least not with our DBs. We are playing almost exclusively man-to-man with (usually) one safety playing zone. Sometimes the safety has the deep middle of the field (Cover 1) - that is how Getty got the pick against South Alabama. Sometimes we are playing what I would call Cover 0 which is no deep safety. The safety that does not have man coverage responsibilities does come up toward the line of scrimmage and take some sort of zone coverage - people have called it a "robber" coverage. That is how Gerry got the pick against BYU.
  7. Or just play defense - BYU had 105 yards of total offense. About 300 fewer passing yards than they did against us.
  8. Run a completely different scheme.
  9. UCLA is usually has a Top 20 recruiting class with a couple Top 10s here and there. The only year we were ahead of them was 2011 which I assume coincided with a coaching change on their part. Michigan is usually Top 20 and is a frequent visitor to the Top 10. Michigan State would be basically a toss-up with us over the last several years. A couple years we were ahead, a couple years they were. Not to nit-pick but if you're grouping by seasons, Georgia would be 2013. 2011 Ohio State would be another.
  10. Apparently Elliott is the only OV this weekend. Sounds like the others ran into the same travel issues as McWilliams.
  11. I would guess it is a way to "narrow" the distance between the uprights so you have to be more accurate.
  12. Need picks from QMany and 1Huskermom...
  13. Yep, I'm with you here. I really wish I had time to go back through and see what our rushing average is on straight zone plays vs. all other rushing plays. That was kind of my plan with this thread but I didn't get very far. When you just run straight ahead - or straight to the side in this case - against 7 or 8 guys in the box, your chances of making many yards are just not that good - even if you block it perfectly. Not that it never works but against good teams you're going to have to do something a little different to slow them down a bit or give yourself a numbers advantage somewhere.
  14. Why do people throw in how much $ a guy makes when they want to criticize him? Peanut Butter & Jealous? Yeah, that's always seemed odd to me as well. It's basically the going rate for the job. It's not a guarantee that everything will be perfect. And it's not like you can pay more to guarantee better results. Just ask Iowa.
  15. Dang. I guess that's all I'm going to get done for tonight. I was hoping to get the entire first half but it's not going to happen. Have to start earlier next time.
  16. Nebraska's sixth possession There is one defender in the middle - who is being blocked - but there is a HUGE hole for Newby to run through for a nice gain. He had to jump around the one lineman which killed his momentum or it could have been more. Not very good blocking but I'm not a fan of the play. We're in a double TE set so Miami can crowd the line. Then we run a straight give on an outside zone play so all the OL is running sideways. Just not putting our guys in a very good position. Excellent protection and TA throws a bullet that Hovey can't come up with. I'm not making any excuses for Hovey as we need our receivers to come up with catches like these but it would be nice for TA to help him out. It's a hard throw that Hovey has to drop to his knees and fall left to try to catch. For as open as Hovey is - and stationary, looking right at TA - and as good a pocket as TA has, this ball really needs to be delivered in the numbers (standing up, not sliding).
