Very true. We were all ecstatic with his hires. Dead on with him not really managing them when they got here. Not that an AD had to micromanage every coach’s move, but I have to wonder how things would’ve gone if Scott had an AD like Trev from the beginning.

I think after roughly 40 years of success, the collective mindset was unprepared for what happened in 2002. It was such an outlier of a season, that no one knew how to handle it. You look at the history of every other blue blood from 1970 to 2002, all of them had a handful of down years. They knew that winning wasn’t always guaranteed and also not to panic when it happens. AD wise… Pederson was impulsive and unprepared. TO was never going to be the long term solution. Eichorst was emblematic of Perlman’s meddling. Moos was also not a long term solution and was seemingly asleep at the wheel. Trev finally seems to be the steady leader we’ve needed for decades.

I disagree and stand by my two points - Coaches can get away with a lot of nonsense IF they’re winning. - Trev does not need a salacious Scott Frost tell-all book to justify firing a 16-31 coach.

Is the native son thing still a narrative right now though? I haven’t seen, heard or encountered one instance of someone thinking Scott shouldn’t have been fired. I also think TO’s influence or opinion gets drastically overestimated.

A few thoughts. Severe says “It wasn’t about the losses” … What? It was absolutely about the losses. Coaches notoriously get away with all kinds of buffoonery if they’re winning. Severe says a tell all book about all these shenanigans would allow Trev to “walk away” and say “this is why” as if Trev is feeling some kind of heat for firing Scott? Does anyone truly believe Trev wasn’t justified in firing Scott? Why would he *need* a salacious tell all book? I’ve heard all the rumors, and never thought much about them because I heard the exact same stuff about Frank, Bill and Bo, so I just chalked it up as typical LNK gossip. But what I really don’t understand is, if he truly wasn’t committed, didn’t care, phoned it in etc… why fire half your staff? Why go out and make some pretty excellent hires? Why restructure your contract? Why go through all of that when he could’ve just walked off with a payday last year? How was the team even as competitive as they were if everything was such a raging dumpster fire?

Yes Iowa has had a really solid 10 year run, but they’ve also been very beatable. Scott produced the worst teams Neb has had since the moon landing, and they still took Iowa down to the wire every year. If it takes 7 tries and a historically bad Iowa offense for Campbell to steal a 3 point win, that tells me pretty much all I need to know.

It’s mainly his record against Iowa for me. 1-6, with the only win being this year where Iowa has a monstrously inept offense. That’s not to say that beating Iowa is the end all be all, but I’d say right now it’s a pretty solid benchmark of where we need to be in order to compete for the West. We’ve had two coaches now that haven’t been able to do it, why go for a third that has already demonstrated he’s mostly incapable of doing so? Campbell also feels like one of those “He just needs better resources” guys. That’s not a path I want to go down again. If Campbell ends up being the guy, I could maybe get on board if he surrounds himself with great coordinators. Otherwise, I think Trev should aim higher.

I agree. I think we can and will do better than Campbell or Doeren.

I see this line trotted out by Iowa fans a lot. Iowa fans also endlessly celebrate 1939 Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick. It seems to be a familiar trend among your general B1G fan. They love to mention how the conference has existed for over a hundred years and they’ll celebrate Heismans and national titles that predate the Eisenhower administration. They’ll then tell Neb fans to “Stop living in the 90’s.”

A really fun combination of cynical, excited, anxious, hopeful, and nervous.

Seeing the various media guys hysterics yesterday and continuing to today with these looney tune comments about tie knots make me embarrassed to be a fan. Frost is deserving of all kinds of scrutiny, but good God. Get a grip.

Of course some fans will thump their chests about National titles from decades ago, especially now with how bad this 5 year stretch has been. But this “Living in the past” trope that seemingly only gets lobbed at Neb just seems like a cheap insult from a random B1G fan or coach. Hitting reset for two decades and trying everything under the sun with different coaches doesn’t really strike me as “living in the past.” To me “Living in the past” would’ve been doing something like hiring Paul Johnson to run an option offense again.

Frost's offenses have always racked up a lot of yards. But... In 2021, tied for 67th in turnovers lost at 18 https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/461 and Red Zone Offense coming in at 106th https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/703/p3 Have to imagine that even moderate improvement in both of these categories along with improved overall Special Teams would yield a 7 or 8 win season. That is, assuming the offense maintains potency in other areas and no major drop off on Defense.

Lose to Rutgers but beat Minnesota? Huh? Also, I see this take constantly “What have you seen from the last X amount of years that makes you optimistic that this year will be better?” Nothing. Literally nothing. Any semblance of optimism is based on new staff and new transfers. Remarkably lazy take.

This is what makes part of the Frost era so frustrating. The B1G West didn’t suddenly become this Murderer’s Row division where they’re all winning at some unattainable pace. They’re all basically winning at the same clip as they always were. With Wisconsin never really getting a stranglehold on the division, it’s been pretty open the last few years. Super frustrating that we could never take advantage of that, even more so with the end of divisions looming.

Hope everyone can sleep a little more soundly tonight, now that this heinous crime is behind us.

If I fell into a coma and woke up in December to learn Neb went 10-2, I wouldn’t be shocked. If I woke up to learn they went 2-10 I also wouldn’t be shocked. The schedule sets up nicely, but SF has yet to prove he can put it all together. The new staff and player additions sound like needed upgrades, but who knows if they’ll gel. It’s maddening. Obviously anything can happen on any given Saturday, but for the sake of conversation I’ll pencil in W’s against North Dakota and Georgia Southern Probable Wins: Again, anything can happen, but I think these games more likely than not end up as a Neb win. NW, Rutgers, Indiana 50/50 Games where I wouldn’t be shocked if we won by 10 or lost by 10: Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa. Likely Loss: OU, Wis, Mich. Neb would need an absurd amount of breaks to get to 10-2, but hey, stranger things have happened. I think 8-4 is more likely, and while it would be nice… if those 4 losses were OU, Wis, Mich and Iowa it would feel like a very hollow “good” season, like 2016.

Right. What’re the sheer odds that with another roster reset, Fred gets to 15+ wins?

PSU and OSU are nice moments but it’s difficult not to think that they’re probably just a couple rays of light on the inevitable death march to the end of next season where Fred is finally fired.

Okay? No one is disputing that. You started off by wondering why the media hasn’t been as hard on Frost as they have been on Fred, which I have no idea how you arrived to that conclusion. Frost has been rightfully scrutinized for his entire tenure at Nebraska. But moreover, Frost and Fred are not an apples to apples comparison. Frost gets another year because his team had the redemptive quality of being competitive, while also playing ball by taking a pay cut and axing half his staff. Fred, a man who spent half a decade coaching at the highest level of this sport, is three years and still getting blown out with his team visibly quitting on him.

No kidding. Not to mention that Scott came to Neb with 2 years of G5 Head Coaching experience. Fred had nearly a decade worth of head coaching experience, half at a P5 school and half in the NBA. The level of incompetence shown by Fred is staggering.
