  1. My sarcasm meter may be on the fritz but, if it's not, then that's going a bit far in making a case for mob rule. I think we could have done better with Gary Patterson, for example. I felt NU should, as a blue blood program, be able to hire a HC with experience back then. It also bothered me that we didn't even talk to Charlie Strong, who was a greater candidate (as an SEC DC) than Bo at that time. The clamoring for one of ours hasn't always been a positive, in other words.
  2. Gotcha - at least the good guys won in the end!
  3. I was 'googling' for the same reason (wondering if he was going to be snapped up). I wouldn't mind it for our sake and then I have a friend who went to Jacksonville State also. Their rival is Troy.
  4. I don't think that describes the play as I remember it. Neal went to ground and gave a decent effort. I was surprised nobody else had a shot at the RB.
  5. I didn't watch the whole game so intently as I would one of ours but recall a long TD runs featuring a DB, Tre Neal, missing the only tackle his team was set up to make. I'm pretty sure that was in the first half... p.s. - I thought the story of the game was the UCF turnovers. They looked like they were going to pull away in the 2nd quarter but for a couple of them. I wasn't watching so intently in the second half when they did manage to get up a couple of scores.
  6. There's also the matter of UCF not having been a doormat for long. See below for the records with players that may have still been there (redshirt considered, I guess) ahead of Frost arriving: 2015: 0-12 2014: 9-4 2013: 12-1 2012: 10-4
  7. I think I'd rather go moneyline when you can only get +1.5 (as not many games are decided by one point). I was going to share the same about Troy, Danimal. The Trojans had the 21st-best stats overall by my reckoning. https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/9/29/16382818/neal-brown-troy-football-head-coach-lsu
  8. I am not really impressed with this site, in terms of how it explains the stats, but UCF's defense is ranked pretty low by this metric: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ncaadef Maybe someone else can explain?
  9. I'm with you, OP. No conference should ever have two teams in the playoff in my mind. Given the lack of meaningful games played out of conference, it's ridiculous to think that we can measure the P5 teams accurately. A team that hasn't won its conference shouldn't be able to play for a national championship. A team from outside the P5 should have a way to get into the mix as well. I think we should have taken the five conference champs and added UCF (because I don't think there's another undefeated). At least the BCS formula was partly impartial. It didn't remember that Alabama's a dynasty. The P5 should constitute one division and the G5 should be another if this is what passes for how we're going to let the kids "settle it on the field." p.s. - With respect to NU getting screwed in the past, in terms of bowl selection only (because we all know that 1994 OB was in a class all its own as far as screw jobs go), I'd have to bring up the 1994 Orange and 2000 Sugar bowls. NU should have played an undefeated WV in the former and F$U in the former, imo. It has always bothered me that one undefeated Big East team was allowed to play for a title while the other wasn't (an it benefited Bobby Bowden each time). If the undefeated BE team had played in each NC game, that would have been fine. If the two best teams were chosen each season, that would also have made some sense. It's the inconsistency that gets me (outside NU getting a raw deal twice).
  10. I remember how excited people were about Bo coaching in the national title game with LSU the same way. It's something. They got a tough draw, though. Auburn has shown the ability to pound the rock in the SEC. Only Alabama and Georgia have done that better...
  11. UCF played Memphis twice. I just didn't count the second game, when I worked with stats, because most teams didn't play an extra game. I've shared many times that I get my stats from cfbstats.com because they allow me to purge games versus lower division teams. As I shared above, you can see all the stats I considered in my UCF post from last week: UCF Statistical Rankings To address the other question asked above, I'm also considering the number of plays a defense has faced in the Total Defense category. That's the worst of the three stats for UCF in that category. The Golden Knights gave up a roughly average amount of yards overall on the season but they faced a lot more plays than the average FBS team did in the same time period (again, the regular season). There's always more to the story than the numbers. I suppose I should have just linked to the old post and been done.
  12. As I've shared elsewhere, UCF's defensive stats are as follows (in terms of percentiles): Passing Defense: average percentile rating of stats in this category, for 2017 season up to but not including the CCG, is 61 Rushing Defense: 70 Scoring Defense: 79 Total Defense: 44 UCF clearly didn't play a very tough schedule but saying they gave up tons of points shows someone didn't do his homework. They have given up a little more than the average number of yards. If you want something more detailed than this, I shared it in a UCF stats post you can find on page 1 or page 2 of this forum.
  13. Yeah, I suppose it has to do with their defense having faced an unusual amount of plays. The optimist in me thinks it's just a matter of UCF having turned turnovers into points. Maybe they were always tougher to run on but teams were usually trying to come from behind... Stats are so interdependent that it's tough to get a good picture from them.
  14. It would seem that this is relevant to NU football now so I figured I'd share. You all know what I'm doing. Click on one of my older posts if you don't. There should be one on page 2. Numbers given are percentiles. No adjustment has been made for strength of schedule. This is simply how UCF's individual stats compare to national averages from games between 130 FBS teams over the course of the season to date. Passing Defense completions per game: 38 completion percentage: 90 yards per attempt: 71 touchdowns per game: 40 passer rating: 82 yards per game: 28 Passing Offense completions per game: 73 completion percentage: 94 yards per attempt: 99 touchdowns per game: 97 passer rating: 99 yards per game: 93 Rushing Defense yards per carry: 56 touchdowns per game: 86 yards per game: 64 Rushing Offense yards per carry: 85 touchdowns per game: 96 yards per game: 72 Scoring Defense touchdowns per game: 76 points per game: 81 Scoring Offense touchdowns per game: 100 points per game: 99 Total Defense yards per play: 60 yards per game: 47 plays per game: 26 Total Offense yards per play: 99 yards per game: 98 plays per game: 56 Turnover Margin fumbles gained per game: 85 interceptions gained per game: 98 turnovers gained per game: 99 fumbles lost per game: 81 interceptions lost per game: 78 turnovers lost per game: 87 turnover margin per game: 99 As much as some of the defensive figures pale in comparison to the offensive ones, I am very encouraged by the turnover margin numbers. The last two NU coaches didn't field teams that forced fumbles (unless you count our guys for Bo and that's even after Taylor graduated).
  15. He turned them down once already (Oregon) last season. All signs reportedly point to Frost coming home.
  16. I doubt Kirk has anything for or against us. He just gets paid to talk and sometimes that results in sensitive types feeling as if their hair has been pulled.
  17. I understand the point about Riley's lack of success at Oregon State. I would only add that he was on the hot seat there at the time NU hired him away. The guy peaked at OSU at least five years before that (and you could make a case it was in 2006, as the Beavers won 10, but they were also blown out a few times that season). I just hope we're not on here posting about how Scott Frost was too great a risk in a few years. I know I'm still not over hearing about how Gary Patterson wanted the Nebraska job. I really thought he wouldn't even go back to his alma mater back then (K-State) because he was happy at TCU. I suppose that still could have been true and he just recognized the potential of Nebraska. The rest of your post gets a little silly, though. No coach plans to have no running game, let alone no defense. I'd bet the failure had more to do with preparation (S&C, type and number of techniques/schemes taught, nature of practices) than philosophy and play calling. All coaches are going to utilize any and all recruiting connections they can to acquire talent, too. California has been targeted by NU since the late sixties to great effect. If I was going to pick on the Riley staff over personnel, I would point to how little they tried the JUCO transfer route. p.s. - All hires carry some risk. Riley built something from practically nothing in a major conference, starting in 1997. That's a lot of experience at the highest level. Scott Frost took a winless team and has them undefeated, playing for an AAC championship in only his second season as a HC, but UCF had not been a doormat in the years prior to 2015. They went 21-5 in the conference under O'Leary in the two previous seasons (and notched 10 wins the season before in Conference USA). p.p.s. - If I'm going to channel the original post and oversimplify things, I'd say that B1G football is much different than Pac-12 football (and I've shared stats to illustrate this over the course of several seasons now). The transition was too much for Mike Riley and company, especially with extreme defensive changes, in a relatively short period of time. There's also the matter of the conference having gotten tougher since NU joined. We've thought that our Cornhuskers should be more competitive in it since leaving the Big XII.
  18. Bo scoffs at legal issues. Look at Ma’lik Richmond.
  19. Is that you, Fielding Yost? Football used to kill more people. Teddy Roosevelt is credited with helping ameliorate that situation.
  20. I'm surprised to read that anyone posting here could believe that everyone supported MR at any point. I was concerned that we hired a guy who seemed to be on the hot seat at a lesser program but I gave him a chance even after things didn't start well.
  21. At least Bill's teams had some good offensive lines. I think you have to go back that far...
  22. The refs let us off the hook on the first play from scrimmage. I wasn't going to have a problem with them after that.
  23. The percentile ratings given per stat are relative to those for all teams in all games between FBS teams this season (meaning no games against FCS teams were considered). The 50th percentile is exactly average while anything less than double digits is absolutely awful. When I share percentile ratings for an entire category, I've averaged the percentile ratings for all the stats within that category to come up with them. When I share defensive and offensive rankings, I've only averaged the category averages for passing, rushing, scoring, and total categories (such that only turnover margin has been left out). Here are NU's individual stat rankings, across nine categories, for the 2017 season (and thank heavens I don't have to write 2017-18): Pass D stats completions per game 32 percentage 12 yards per attempt 51 touchdowns per game 50 rating 35 yards per game 56 Pass O stats completions per game 77 percentage 48 yards per attempt 50 touchdowns per game 69 rating 45 yards per game 78 Rush D stats yards per carry 6 touchdowns per game 6 yards per game 16 Rush O stats yards per carry 16 touchdowns per game 20 yards per game 12 Scoring D stats touchdowns per game 10 points per game 12 Scoring O stats touchdowns per game 40 points per game 39 Total D stats yards per play 18 yards per game 27 plays per game 58 Total O stats yards per play 44 yards per game 42 plays per game 43 Turnover Margin stats fumbles gained per game 7 interceptions gained per game 37 turnovers gained per game 13 fumbles lost per game 96 interceptions lost per game 5 turnovers lost per game 42 turnover margin per game 19 Average % for all these stats 35 Here are the B1G rankings of category percentiles through the regular season: PD 1 Michigan 2 Wisconsin 3 Michigan State 4 Ohio State 5 Penn State 6 Iowa 7 Indiana 8 Minnesota 9 Purdue 10 Illinois 11 Northwestern 12 Rutgers 13 Maryland 14 Nebraska PO 1 Ohio State 2 Penn State 3 Wisconsin 4 Nebraska 5 Indiana 6 Purdue 7 Northwestern 8 Iowa 9 Michigan State 10 Michigan 11 Maryland 12 Illinois 13 Minnesota 14 Rutgers RD 1 Wisconsin 2 Ohio State 3 Northwestern 4 Michigan State 5 Penn State 6 Purdue 7 Michigan 8 Iowa 9 Indiana 10 Minnesota 11 Rutgers 12 Illinois 13 Maryland 14 Nebraska RO 1 Ohio State 2 Wisconsin 3 Penn State 4 Michigan 5 Northwestern 6 Minnesota 7 Michigan State 8 Purdue 9 Iowa 10 Maryland 11 Rutgers 12 Indiana 13 Nebraska 14 Illinois SD 1 Wisconsin 2 Penn State 3 Michigan 4 Purdue 5 Iowa 6 Michigan State 7 Northwestern 8 Ohio State 9 Minnesota 10 Indiana 11 Rutgers 12 Illinois 13 Nebraska 14 Maryland SO 1 Ohio State 2 Penn State 3 Wisconsin 4 Northwestern 5 Iowa 6 Indiana 7 Nebraska 8 Michigan 9 Purdue 10 Michigan State 11 Minnesota 12 Maryland 13 Illinois 14 Rutgers TD 1 Wisconsin 2 Michigan 3 Michigan State 4 Ohio State 5 Minnesota 6 Penn State 7 Iowa 8 Indiana 9 Northwestern 10 Purdue 11 Rutgers 12 Illinois 13 Nebraska 14 Maryland TO 1 Ohio State 2 Penn State 3 Northwestern 4 Wisconsin 5 Indiana 6 Michigan State 7 Purdue 8 Nebraska 9 Michigan 10 Iowa 11 Minnesota 12 Maryland 13 Illinois 14 Rutgers Turnovers 1 Penn State 2 Northwestern 3 Purdue 4 Ohio State 5 Iowa 6 Wisconsin 7 Michigan State 8 Minnesota 9 Maryland 10 Michigan 11 Indiana 12 Illinois 13 Nebraska 14 Rutgers If I average the category rankings for all these categories, here's how the B1G stacks up overall: 1 Ohio State 87.40 2 Penn State 83.87 3 Wisconsin 82.48 4 Northwestern 65.30 5 Michigan 62.07 6 Michigan State 61.58 7 Purdue 57.79 8 Iowa 57.62 9 Indiana 51.18 10 Minnesota 44.83 11 Nebraska 31.06 12 Maryland 24.98 13 Rutgers 23.07 14 Illinois 22.93 If we really had a good passing offense on the season, you'd think we'd have been able to put up better numbers than a running team like Wisconsin overall. It's amazing that a Minnesota team, in "year zero," could put up numbers that are appreciably better than ours as well. This is one of the things I think about when those who sympathize with Mike Riley tell the world it shouldn't only be about the W-L record because it clearly isn't. Rankings for the entire FBS division follow: Rank Team overall 1 Ohio State 87.40 2 Alabama 86.96 3 Auburn 85.34 4 Penn State 83.87 5 Wisconsin 82.48 6 Georgia 81.40 7 UCF 80.23 8 Clemson 79.46 9 24. That depends. When was my last extension? Do I figure on having a lot of money to not coach in the near future?
  25. The B1G has gotten better and we've gotten worse since joining. I think we already had a sort of MR in BP, though. He always managed to lose at least a game or two he shouldn't in a given season. He did all right in games we didn't think we'd win, though, on the other hand. Wisconsin doesn't fit into either of these categories. Michigan having to sit Denard and OSU having to play Bauserman come to mid with respect to the second, though. Given Bo's defensive preference of selling out against the pass, it wouldn't seem reasonable to think that was going to mean conference championships either. I understand Purdue wants to go back to basketball on grass maybe...and Indiana has been pass-happy for a B1G team recently...but the best passing team is Ohio State probably...and that's just a matter of their having it all.
