  1. I'm sure it has already been mentioned that The Pirate has a good DC already. If we were to hire Mike Gundy, on the other hand, that's when we'd need to make sure we hired a new DC for him. p.s. - If you're up on your Tunnel Walk of Shame reading, you'd know that the offenses Frost and Leach run aren't so different.
  2. I just want to see a team that is fundamentally sound. A team like that will not beat itself. I want to see our opponents earn their wins against us. What it all boils down to is love of the game really. There's no substitute for that. We've seen some disrespect shown for the game in recent seasons. p.s. - I'm sort of paraphrasing Frank Leahy above. I don't think he'd mind.
  3. Tommy Armstrong was a gamer, pure and simple. Lots of people, Husker fans included, didn't give him enough credit. He won at the Big House as a freshman. Let's compare him to Tanner over the two losing seasons for MR (only PASSING stats as we know there's no comparison otherwise): Games 12 for TA and 11 for TL Attempts 402 for TA and 387 for TL Completions 222 for TA and 224 for TL % Complete 55.2 for TA and 57.9 for TL Yards 3,030 for TA and 2,938 for TL Yards per attempt 7.5 for TA and 7.6 for TL Touchdowns 22 for TA and 21 for TL Interceptions 16 for TA and 13 for TL QB Rating 128.63 for TA and 132.84 for TL Attempts per game 33.5 for TA and 35.2 for TL Yards per game 252.5 for TA and 267.1 for TL Considering Tommy Gun wasn't the type of QB for a system that was brand new at Nebraska, along with the threat he represented as a runner, I think he performed admirably overall. The only thing in Tanner's favor, with respect to the comparison, is that the Cornhuskers could run the ball with TA (so it STILL comes back to #4!). I won't fault Me-shawn for loyalty. That's admirable. I will fault him for stupidity and taking a shot at a guy who had a tougher job at DONU than he did at the University of Spoiled Children. I wonder if HE ever tried to play a game with makeshift bracing from a hardware store on his leg.
  4. I thought I just shouldn't taunt it? Damn it! That was "Happy Fun Ball!" /goes Into hiding after lighting a candle to curry the favor (or stay the wrath?) of the almighty MEGATHREAD
  5. What kind of MEGATHREAD are you? I see more Scott Frost threads starting. One has even gone beyond a page. Are you just going to let that happen? DEVOUR THEM ALL, O MIGHTY MEGATHREAD!
  6. I'm 1 and 2 as well. The Corn shall rise again!
  7. I was thinking the same. I have generally been commenting on how our stats in the passing defense category have been inflated by how many teams choose to simply run on us but, with those both having bottomed out, the new head-scratcher is our having a "good" passing offense. We have to do something with all those possessions after our opponents kick off. p.s. - The other misleading stat is the one for 2015 rushing yards per carry. Opponents chose to throw on the NU defense that season.
  8. I'm taking all the stats for nine categories from all the games played this season between FBS teams. I'm calculating z-scores and turning them into percentiles for individual stats within those categories and then averaging all those to come up with rankings (based on the average percentile ranking for the stats within those categories). No adjustment has been made for strength of schedule (SOS). Let's start with all the Nebraska stats in these nine categories (with the number on the right being the percentile, relative to the national average for that statistic): Pass D stats completions per game 27 percentage 13 yards per attempt 55 touchdowns per game 53 rating 40 yards per game 54 Pass O stats completions per game 75 percentage 50 yards per attempt 57 touchdowns per game 69 rating 52 yards per game 81 Rush D stats yards per carry 9 touchdowns per game 14 yards per game 21 Rush O stats yards per carry 17 touchdowns per game 24 yards per game 14 Scoring D stats touchdowns per game 16 points per game 18 Scoring O stats touchdowns per game 44 points per game 44 Total D stats yards per play 23 yards per game 31 plays per game 58 Total O stats yards per play 50 yards per game 48 plays per game 46 Turnover Margin stats fumbles gained per game 9 interceptions gained per game 46 turnovers gained per game 19 fumbles lost per game 94 interceptions lost per game 11 turnovers lost per game 54 turnover margin per game 30 Average % for all these stats 39 Here is how we measure up, in terms of statistics, within our conference (considering all games played vs. FBS teams, not just conference ones like I sometimes do): PD 1 Michigan 2 Wisconsin 3 Ohio State 4 Michigan State 5 Minnesota 6 Iowa 7 Penn State 8 Indiana 9 Purdue 10 Illinois 11 Maryland 12 Rutgers 13 Northwestern 14 Nebraska PO 1 Ohio State 2 Penn State 3 Nebraska 4 Wisconsin 5 Indiana 6 Purdue 7 Northwestern 8 Iowa 9 Michigan State 10 Michigan 11 Maryland 12 Illinois 13 Minnesota 14 Rutgers RD 1 Wisconsin 2 Ohio State 3 Northwestern 4 Penn State 5 Michigan State 6 Michigan 7 Purdue 8 Iowa 9 Indiana 10 Minnesota 11 Rutgers 12 Maryland 13 Illinois 14 Nebraska RO 1 Ohio State 2 Wisconsin 3 Michigan 4 Penn State 5 Minnesota 6 Northwestern 7 Michigan State 8 Maryland 9 Rutgers 10 Purdue 11 Nebraska 12 Indiana 13 Iowa 14 Illinois SD 1 Wisconsin 2 Penn State 3 Michigan 4 Purdue 5 Iowa 6 Ohio State 7 Michigan State 8 Northwestern 9 Minnesota 10 Indiana 11 Rutgers 12 Illinois 13 Nebraska 14 Maryland SO 1 Ohio State 2 Penn State 3 Wisconsin 4 Northwestern 5 Nebraska 6 Indiana 7 Iowa 8 Michigan 9 Minnesota 10 Purdue 11 Maryland 12 Michigan State 13 Illinois 14 Rutgers TD 1 Wisconsin 2 Michigan 3 Ohio State 4 Michigan State 5 Minnesota 6 Penn State 7 Indiana 8 Purdue 9 Iowa 10 Northwestern 11 Rutgers 12 Illinois 13 Maryland 14 Nebraska TO 1 Ohio State 2 Penn State 3 Northwestern 4 Wisconsin 5 Indiana 6 Nebraska 7 Purdue 8 Michigan State 9 Michigan 10 Iowa 11 Minnesota 12 Maryland 13 Illinois 14 Rutgers Turnovers 1 Penn State 2 Purdue 3 Wisconsin 4 Northwestern 5 Maryland 6 Ohio State 7 Iowa 8 Minnesota 9 Michigan 10 Michigan State 11 Nebraska 12 Indiana 13 Illinois 14 Rutgers The average Nebraska ranking, for all the categories above, is effectively 10th (but, as you can see below, Minnesota gets the official nod for that slot). I guess that says something about our offense, given how poor the defensive numbers are. The season could have been even worse? Here are the overall rankings for the B1G stats (based on the average of all the category averages): 1 Ohio State 87.67 2 Wisconsin 82.09 3 Penn State 81.17 4 Michigan 64.03 5 Northwestern 60.82 6 Purdue 57.90 7 Michigan State 57.29 8 Iowa 51.89 9 Indiana 51.70 10 Minnesota 48.71 11 Nebraska 35.29 12 Maryland 29.73 13 Rutgers 25.54 14 Illinois 25.06 The number on the right is calculated by taking the average of all the averages for the individual categories. In other words, I average all the stats I listed above for NU for each B1G team by category and then average those averages to get the overall ranking. I'm almost certainly laboring the point now. The average % I shared for NU up top was a straight percentage of all, regardless of category, in contrast to what I've done for the B1G rankings. Here are the national rankings, per this method of averaging category averages, considering all games between FBS teams, and not adjusting for SOS: 1 Alabama 89.59 2 Ohio State 87.67 3 Auburn 86.12 4 UCF 84.76 5 Wisconsin 82.09 6 South Florida 81.74 7 Penn State 81.17 8 Georgia 79.68 9 Clemson 78.50 10 Washington 77.25 11 Oklahoma 73.93 12 Miami (Florida) 73.49 13 Virginia Tech 73.40 14 Notre Dame 72.32 15 TCU 71.32 16 Boise State 70.68 17 San Diego State 69.84 18 Washington State 69.45 19 Toledo 67.67 20 Mississippi State 66.68 21 USC 66.23 22 Oklahoma State 65.62 23 LSU 65.41 24 Louisville 64.80 25 UTSA 64.44 26 Texas 64.38 27 Michigan 64.03 28 Southern Mississippi 63.98 29 Arkansas State 63.13 30 Northern Illinois 62.64 31 Stanford 62.50 32 Florida Atlantic 62.31 33 Memphis 61.36 34 Northwestern 60.82 35 Fresno State 60.58 36 North Carolina State 60.04 37 Troy 59.42 38 Ohio 58.86 39 Iowa State 58.44 40 Appalachian State 58.15 41 Colorado State 57.96 42 Purdue 57.90 43 Marshall 57.88 44 Houston 57.44 45 Missouri 57.44 46 Michigan State 57.29 47 Wake Forest 56.97 48 Oregon 56.70 49 Texas A&M 56.03 50 Western Michigan 55.49 51 Georgia Tech 55.48 52 Army 55.40 53 Massachusetts 55.38 54 Utah 54.15 55 UAB 54.09 56 Central Michigan 53.52 57 South Carolina 53.33 58 Eastern Michigan 53.28 59 Western Kentucky 52.70 60 West Virginia 52.04 61 Iowa 51.89 62 Wyoming 51.85 63 Indiana 51.70 64 Navy 51.67 65 Boston College 51.29 66 Texas Tech 51.11 67 Duke 50.90 68 Arizona 50.71 69 SMU 50.05 70 Miami (Ohio) 49.61 71 Georgia State 49.15 72 Arizona State 49.08 73 Buffalo 48.95 74 Kansas State 48.78 75 Minnesota 48.71 76 North Texas 48.32 77 Louisiana Tech 48.30 78 Utah State 48.22 79 Virginia 48.11 80 New Mexico State 47.25 81 Middle Tennessee 47.11 82 Florida 46.37 83 UNLV 45.18 84 Pittsburgh 43.50 85 Colorado 43.10 86 UCLA 43.07 87 Mississippi 42.46 88 Louisiana-Monroe 42.26 89 California 42.24 90 Tulane 41.87 91 Kentucky 40.80 92 Air Force 40.38 93 Temple 38.97 94 Idaho 38.81 95 Florida State 38.34 96 Louisiana-Lafayette 37.48 97 Tulsa 37.36 98 Florida International 35.44 99 Syracuse 35.35 100 Nebraska 35.29 101 Nevada 34.15 102 Hawai'i 32.36 103 Coastal Carolina 32.34 104 New Mexico 31.82 105 Arkansas 31.51 106 BYU 31.50 107 Akron 31.02 108 South Alabama 30.56 109 Tennessee 29.91 110 Baylor 29.87 111 Maryland 29.73 112 North Carolina 29.53 113 Georgia Southern 29.10 114 Texas State 28.51 115 East Carolina 27.89 116 Cincinnati 27.80 117 Old Dominion 27.79 118 Bowling Green 26.53 119 Vanderbilt 25.68 120 Connecticut 25.64 121 Rutgers 25.54 122 Illinois 25.06 123 Rice 20.38 124 Charlotte 19.49 125 Ball State 18.98 126 Kent State 18.54 127 Oregon State 18.16 128 Kansas 13.93 129 UTEP 13.73 130 San Jose State 7.84 We're consistent in that we've retained the 100th spot we were at ahead of the Penn State game. Lastly, I figured I'd share the yards per carry given up by the Blackshirts going back to 2008 (because that's how far back cfbstats.com allows me to go and filter out games versus lower division teams): 2017 - 5.44 2016 - 4.44 2015 - 3.77 2014 - 4.82 2013 - 3.61 2012 - 4.96 2011 - 4.13 2010 - 3.90 2009 - 2.78 2008 - 3.67 Only six teams have posted a stat below 3 this season. 42 teams (including the aforementioned six) have posted a stat below 4. Get well, Big Red!
  9. It appears you're using the rankings from when the games were played up there, MD. UCLA ended up 9th in the final AP poll for 1987. ASU was 20th. Oklahoma State actually went up to #11 by that season's end. I'm not pointing it out to nitpick. I just think early rankings are often worthless and don't think Tom needs the assist besides. I think TO gets plenty of love here and the general issue, when it comes to talk of unrealistic expectations, is how spoiled we were. I wasn't trying to hate on my own team by trying to temper them somewhat. Another big problem is how many people don't watch enough college football. You realize how rare a great QB is when you see nationally relevant programs struggle offensively, for example.
  10. I liked your post but wasn't sure what this was about?
  11. I didn't write anything about Mike Riley so I'm not sure why you're cursing at me? TO's rep changed. College football has changed (or those margins would have been worse, for one thing). Some of us would do well to remember such things ahead of the next roll of the dice. p.s. - Remember this cartoon? LJS from 1990
  12. All this talk of how TO would have been fired made me look up one of my old posts, in which I wrote the following: "Remember when TO's teams lost seven bowl games in a row by an average margin over two touchdowns? Washington, Oklahoma, and Colorado also defeated our beloved Cornhuskers by similar margins during the regular seasons of those years...with the worst score being 10-45." 1987 losses: Oklahoma by 10 and F$U by 3 1988 losses: UCLA by 13 and Miami by 20 1989 losses: Colorado by 6 and F$U by 24 1990 losses: Colorado by 15; Oklahoma by 35; and Georgia Tech by 24 1991 losses: Washington by 15 and Miami by 22 (with NU failing to score in the bowl) 1992 losses: Washington by 15; Iowa State by 9; and F$U by 13 1993 losses: F$U by 2 I remember when he was a joke. How do you keep Tom Osborne from parking his car? Paint a goal line in his driveway! Hyuk! How could anyone have foreseen the historic run that was to follow? What year was it TO was going to leave NU (or get fired?). My Google key is on the fritz at the moment...
  13. I have nothing against people speculating but how do you know this? Perhaps it's just a matter of wording. p.s. - Wyoming has an awful offense this season. Considering only stats from games between conference teams, their average yards per rush is the same as ours at 3.38. That's bad enough for 103rd out of 126 teams (excluding the independents).

it's getting depressing. Here are the averages of all the individual category averages for the B1G teams (without any consideration for SOS and relative to games between all FBS teams - i.e., the OOC games are included): Ohio State 85.60 Wisconsin 83.52 Penn State 80.92 Michigan 67.21 Michigan State 56.92 Purdue 56.82 Minnesota 55.23 Northwestern 54.34 Iowa 53.93 Indiana 44.40 Nebraska 36.51 Illinois 29.19 Maryland 29.16 Rutgers 29.15 If this was the world's football, also known as association football or soccer, I guess the silver lining is our team wouldn't be relegated (as I can't think of a league that sends down four teams)? p.s. - Remember that stats are interdependent. Because of how poorly our team has defended the run, it almost looks like (on paper) that we've defended the pass better than we have. See also: passing and rushing offensive stats. Do you think we have a good passing offense? I think it's more a matter of our being reduced to having to chuck it all over the yard (well maybe not ALL OVER because that would require more time than our QB routinely gets).
  16. The idea makes me sick. We're still Nebraska. Should we channel 2LC jumping around with gold chains on the sideline, too? I get that we want to rationalize our SF fantasies but this is going too far. Miami hadn't looked like they did last weekend all season. The toughest teams they had played were Georgia Tech and Syracuse. Notre Dame hasn't had a truly great power running game under Kelly but, now that he had given up OC duty, it appeared they might have one. Wimbush is not a pocket passer, however, and ND's passing numbers have been pretty lousy. There's not much for balance, in other words. The bigger surprise was Elko's defense to me. p.s. - The ND fans seem to think BK's fingerprints are all over that offensive playcalling. The running plays were slow-developing ones that played to the strength of the Hurricons. Take the first drive by ND for another kind of example. They got to Miami's 35 before running three passing plays. That does seem more like Kelly...
  17. I'd like to see this process run its course without smoke. Let's hope it's like the AD hire and it just gets done quietly for the sake of the university's image. It's bad enough that some Horned Frog coach is croaking this week.
  18. That's interesting about BS, Junior. I have wondered about someone like Snyder, too. That would have been the Riley hire that made sense (a coach who has done more with less). Would the fanbase accept an old enemy? What about the mullet that is Gundy? p.s. - I'd like to think we'd insist on a new defensive staff in that circumstance, of course.
  19. I don't know that I'd go that far. I don't think Frank was cut out for the job but am sure he gave it all he had while some coaches on his staff were effectively retired in place.
  20. I was against it because I thought we should be getting a seasoned head coach (like Patterson or Johnson at the time - wasn't too impressed with Grobe). I thought we should grab up Charlie Strong if we were going to get a DC from the SEC and felt it was stupid to value a Husker connection to the extent we did. With that said, I supported Bo as our head coach and only started to get disappointed when we lost to UCLA. Mora was in his first season and his team looked better than Bo's in what was his fifth. p.s. - I wonder how diminished our bargaining power is now relative to then.
  21. That's a funny graphic. Cajones means drawers (like for a desk). Cojones is clearly what should have been used.
  22. When Oregon State was competing for conference titles, there were fewer strong (football) programs in the Pac-Ten. When Nebraska joined the B1G, it was weaker than it is today. Times change but hiring a guy whose best days are long behind him will always be a bad idea. Hiring a coach will always involve some risk, too. There's a lot of oversimplification around these parts nowadays (talking about how our new AD just needs to make the "right" hire, as if anyone tries to go the other way). As for the divided fan base, it should have gotten together for the start of the latest era. I know I gave our current HC a chance. He clearly was given more than one by the former AD in light of staff changes that were clearly not the answer. There was also the matter of an extension. I don't understand why we have to be the same as everyone else when it comes to money sometimes (mainly focusing on that extension - the explanation could be even simpler than that). I'd like to see us hire an administrative head coach, like a BK, and break the bank on coordinators and their preferred assistants.
  23. The war in Afghanistan has been going on since 2001.
  24. Robinson was all right the first time and did a good job for the Rams in the NFL to boot. It was his second stint at U$C that you might fairly question. O'Leary was probably a decent hire for ND at the time but for George's resume issue (such that we'll never know how that may have turned out anyway).
