I'm sure it has already been mentioned that The Pirate has a good DC already. I just want to see a team that is fundamentally sound. A team like that will not beat itself. I want to see our opponents earn their wins against us. What it all boils down to is love of the game really. There's no substitute for that. Tommy Armstrong was a gamer, pure and simple. Lots of people, Husker fans included, didn't give him enough credit. He won at the Big House as a freshman. That's admirable. I will fault him for stupidity and taking a shot at a guy who had a tougher job at DONU than he did at the University of Spoiled Children. I was thinking the same. I have generally been commenting on how our stats in the passing defense category have been inflated by how many teams choose to simply run on us but, with those both having bottomed out, the new head-scratcher is our having a "good" passing offense. We have to do something with all those possessions after our opponents kick off. p.s. - The other misleading stat is the one for 2015 rushing yards per carry. Opponents chose to throw on the NU defense that season.

I'm taking all the stats for nine categories from all the games played this season between FBS teams. I'm calculating z-scores and turning them into percentiles for individual stats within those categories and then averaging all those to come up with rankings (based on the average percentile ranking for the stats within those categories). No adjustment has been made for strength of schedule (SOS). It appears you're using the rankings from when the games were played up there, MD. UCLA ended up 9th in the final AP poll for 1987. ASU was 20th. Oklahoma State actually went up to #11 by that season's end. I'm not pointing it out to nitpick. I just think early rankings are often worthless and don't think Tom needs the assist besides. I think TO gets plenty of love here and the general issue, when it comes to talk of unrealistic expectations, is how spoiled we were. I wasn't trying to hate on my own team by trying to temper them somewhat. Another big problem is how many people don't watch enough college football. You realize how rare a great QB is when you see nationally relevant programs struggle offensively, for example.

All this talk of how TO would have been fired made me look up one of my old posts, in which I wrote the following: "Remember when TO's teams lost seven bowl games in a row by an average margin over two touchdowns? I have nothing against people speculating but how do you know this? Perhaps it's just a matter of wording. p.s. - Wyoming has an awful offense this season. Considering only stats from games between conference teams, their average yards per rush is the same as ours at 3.38. That's bad enough for 103rd out of 126 teams (excluding the independents).

The idea makes me sick. We're still Nebraska. Should we channel 2LC jumping around with gold chains on the sideline, too? I get that we want to rationalize our SF fantasies but this is going too far. Miami hadn't looked like they did last weekend all season. The toughest teams they had played were Georgia Tech and Syracuse. Notre Dame hasn't had a truly great power running game under Kelly but, now that he had given up OC duty, it appeared they might have one. Wimbush is not a pocket passer, however, and ND's passing numbers have been pretty lousy. There's not much for balance, in other words. The bigger surprise was Elko's defense to me. p.s. - The ND fans seem to think BK's fingerprints are all over that offensive playcalling. The running plays were slow-developing ones that played to the strength of the Hurricons. Take the first drive by ND for another kind of example. They got to Miami's 35 before running three passing plays. That does seem more like Kelly...

I'd like to see this process run its course without smoke. Let's hope it's like the AD hire and it just gets done quietly for the sake of the university's image. It's bad enough that some Horned Frog coach is croaking this week.

That's interesting about BS, Junior. I have wondered about someone like Snyder, too. That would have been the Riley hire that made sense (a coach who has done more with less). I don't know that I'd go that far. I don't think Frank was cut out for the job but am sure he gave it all he had while some coaches on his staff were effectively retired in place.

I was against it because I thought we should be getting a seasoned head coach (like Patterson or Johnson at the time - wasn't too impressed with Grobe). I thought we should grab up Charlie Strong if we were going to get a DC from the SEC and felt it was stupid to value a Husker connection to the extent we did. With that said, I supported Bo as our head coach and only started to get disappointed when we lost to UCLA. Mora was in his first season and his team looked better than Bo's in what was his fifth. p.s. - I wonder how diminished our bargaining power is now relative to then.

When Oregon State was competing for conference titles, there were fewer strong (football) programs in the Pac-Ten. When Nebraska joined the B1G, it was weaker than it is today. Times change but hiring a guy whose best days are long behind him will always be a bad idea. Hiring a coach will always involve some risk, too. There's a lot of oversimplification around these parts nowadays (talking about how our new AD just needs to make the "right" hire, as if anyone tries to go the other way). As for the divided fan base, it should have gotten together for the start of the latest era. I know I gave our current HC a chance. He clearly was given more than one by the former AD in light of staff changes that were clearly not the answer. There was also the matter of an extension. I don't understand why we have to be the same as everyone else when it comes to money sometimes (mainly focusing on that extension - the explanation could be even simpler than that).
