Second what HiLW said--skip Austin, go to San Antonio instead. Or to one of the various places in the Hill Country with something cool to do. 

I've never been, but from afar Austin has always seemed like a really nice place that's been overrun by douschebags.

I actually enjoy Texas, even El Paso (basically it's nice as long as you're not on the streets or neighborhoods right across from the boarder itself).  I did like Austin at first, but the constant BS just left a lasting impression on me and I wont go back.  San Antonio and Dallas, love both places and the smaller towns are fun as well.  @HuskerNBigDI had never been there previous to that, so I will have to take your word for it.
