  1. While I understand the emotion with how the year has unfolded, a coaching change would not be wise. Give the staff some space to instill what they are trying to instill and see what next year brings.

Keep trying to convince yourself of that. Even the national media doesn't understand why Riley hasn't been terminated.

I guess I just don't see how firing him could be a positive for the program at this point. The downside list is pretty long, the upside list not so much. This staff has been here less than a year. I'm willing to give them more time to see what develops.

      I agree khaake.

  2. Meh. If Nebraska plays by the dog-eat-dog rules we will lose. We will NOT win-out in a coach grab with USC, or Miami, or [fill-in-the-blank-with-any-one-of-two-dozen-major-programs]. If our goal is to simply out scramble Kansas for a head coach hire, then sure, we could probably do that. But that is not the goal. The goal is to continue and build upon the proud tradition we have here, which goes (and needs to go) well beyond wins and losses. And to do that, we cannot do it in a cut-throat manner. We cannot simply throw money into the pot and hope that something good will come from it. Most likely it will not. I'm not arguing that Riley & his staff are the right choices to right this ship. I had hoped that they would be, but the on-field results haven't shown it to date. But I am more than willing to to give them more time to instill what they are trying to instill. We cannot out big-dog the big dogs. We have to be different. We have to do things right. Give them some space, and let's see what next year brings.
  3. I feel for him. His foot injury was non-contact as well, wasn't it? You have to start wondering at some point if there is something up with his bone structure, etc.
  4. Why, because he broke it? While the wheels may have come off this year, it's been broken for awhile.
  5. Good points. I was very close to stop being a fan of CFB after the PSU scandal and questioned whether it had become too sleazy of an enterprise to continue to support. CFB has become a lot about getting the smartest coaches, recruiting the best players and less about the things that I liked such as players playing for school pride, traditions...etc. I don't think you are alone in questioning it. While there currently is big money behind it, public perception will be what carries it forward, or not. I don't think the latter is at all guaranteed. Big money won't be there forever if the public is not - it simply is not sustainable. As for me, I'll still be here as an NU fan - I always have been - but the mentality that has seemed to grip CFB does give me pause.
  6. It seems that D1 is eating itself. You can play musical coaches if you want to, and it might make some limited differences for individual teams, but overall it does the sport little good - in fact, it harms it. The message being sent is that money talks, cheating is required, and win-at-all-costs. All this for a sport that costs most schools - i.e. their students - money to participate in in the first place. College football had better clean up its act or it will become easy for more of the public to abandon it. It will become more common for parents to steer their kids away from the sport, starving it of athletes. Once in that spiral, it would be hard pulling out. The coaching carousel definitely plays into that negative public perception. As for Riley & the team. Yes, we are not good, and yes the season has been abysmal. But it is the first one under this staff. Give it another year.
  7. Geez, I honestly don't understand the logic of those calling for this staff's head. Has it been a disappointing year? Absolutely. Yes. But be realistic about the situation. The previous staff was let go in an extremely toxic environment where "us against the world" was cultivated. The new staff brought with them a system that they want to run, a system different than the previous staff's, a system that is new to most of those on the team. Given the situation, I don't see that there was any way for any other possible staff to have had much better results. Give them a break and let it play out. Like it or not, the Nebraska program has unfortunately been trending towards mediocrity for quite some time, and it was poisoned on top of it. It will take time to right the ship. Are Riley & company the ones to do so? Maybe they are, maybe they're not, but we as fans should be honest about the situation and give them the time and space to do so.
  8. I'm not convinced the D will be a problem going forward. The defense has not been good, but it was new and seems to be improving. I'm willing to give it another year. If we struggle next season anywhere close to how we did in the first half of this season, then I would be 100% behind going a different route.
  9. This video 'campaign' may not go anywhere, but I saw it scroll past on social media so I thought I'd pose the underlying question: Have the costs of collegiate athletics surpassed their worth? And as a caveat - what is their worth? The video picks on college football. This overview is not very well written, but it outlines the topic and includes the embedded video: http://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/college-athletics-are-stealing-your-future/ Also see http://www.presidentialfootball.com/index.php. I do have to admit I was surprised how much the University of Ohio students were paying in student fees - I think the video asserts that they pay almost $6000 over the course of an undergraduate degree, with the majority of these fees going to their football program. Obviously, this isn't the case everywhere (Virginia Tech students, for example, pay less than $300 annually for sports programs), but given the atmosphere surrounding student loan debt, I could see arguments being made that it shouldn't be the students who foot this bill. And if it is not the students who pay for it, who should? Big time programs probably carry their own weight, but those big time programs need to be able to fill up their schedules with somebody. Any thoughts?
  10. The LJS had an article about it today: http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/football/red-report-pep-talk-from-captain-lewis-energizes-team/article_b923b4d3-533f-553e-b33e-5746f8010da7.html
  11. I don't think the intent is to defend the poor decisions of our staff. It's more to say we dodged a fat, obnoxious, entitled, douchey, sore winner, sore loser, old butthead looking bullet. I think it's people trying to make themselves feel better about the NU situation, by pointing out the failures of Bielema, when NU isn't in any position to be pointing out other's failures. There was similar conversation with Sarkisian at USC. I believe the intent was simply to point out that despite the current struggles of the program, things could be worse - we could have that AND be stuck with somebody like Bielema.
  12. The secondary is still a liability. There's no question about that. But what I saw was a lot more awareness of where the ball was being thrown. We should/could have had about 4 INT's in the last game. Kalu is showing he's almost there. Yes he got beat but he also made some good plays. It's not there like we would like it and it might not be there this year but I saw some flashes of what it can be once they come out with confidence. I agree. While still very porous, the secondary did seem to play 'better' against Wisconsin, and did have a few really nice breakups. Hopefully they will continue to develop. For his part, I thought M. Newby had a great game in pass coverage. We desperately need that kind of play at LB.
  13. I don't see the decision to burn the redshirt as being a big deal in this case. RBs often have a relatively short shelf-life, and if he's as good as advertised, he probably wouldn't stick around all five years anyway. If he's ready to contribute - play him. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do under the lights.
  14. From Brandon Cavanaugh... There’s Dark Smoke Billowing From Within the Nebraska Football Program http://athlonsports.com/college-football/theres-dark-smoke-billowing-within-nebraska-football-program
  15. Good for him. I hope it's a successful move. BTW-I don't know if anyone else is seeing the same thing as me but none of your Twitter posts are showing up. They just look like links. Yeah, he deleted them already, for whatever reason. I edited the above post. Was his twitter always private/protected? Or did he just make his account like that today? I swear I checked it out earlier in the year and it wasn't protected... No, it wasn't private before, at least not before Fall semester started.
  16. Maybe the staff views Stevenson as the future at RB and feel he's ready to start contributing, but you would think we would have heard something out of practice if he was turning heads. What is the official depth chart at RB?
  17. Ha - good one! In all seriousness, though... absolutely not. I don't wish ill on Bo, but I have absolutely no regrets that he is gone.
  18. I agree. It has just never felt very "Nebraska" to me. Can't explain it and I'm not anti-flag/military/American etc. Just always has seemed forced and out of place. Wouldn't miss it. Someone's finally saying this! I always thought it was really dorky. +1
