Co worker says "if Mayans were so smart on predicting things, why arent they still around?" They didnt predict anything. They made a calender. Is the guy that made the calender for 1904 still alive?

That's not entirely true. There are certain prophetic bits attached to parts of the Mayan calendar, especially the katuns. But yes, they did not make any predictions about the end of this long count, even though previous long counts were believed to end with a catastrophe and the rebirth of humanity.

The most important part to remember is that we really don't know that much about the Mayans. Partly thanks to the destruction of most of their works since they were deemed heretical, and partly because a lot of their culture is buried in deep jungle. It does appear, though, that different "kingdoms" within the Mayan culture had variations on their beliefs. So even attributing one thing to the Maya as a whole is difficult and tenuous at best.
