Former Husker charged with child sex assault

By the Lincoln Journal Star

Wednesday, Mar 21, 2007 - 05:15:57 pm CDT

Eric L. Alford, a stand-out player on Nebraska’s 1994 national championship team, was arraigned Wednesday in Lancaster County District Court on a charge of first-degree sexual assault of a child.

Alford, 34, 327 N. 24th St., pleaded not guilty to the charge, a felony punishable by up to 50 years in prison. Lancaster County District Judge Earl Witthoff set a tentative trial date of May 21.

Authorities arrested Alford in February when a 12-year-old girl told child welfare workers he had had a sexual relationship with her for four years. The girl said the contact began as fondling in 2003 and developed into sexual intercourse about two years ago, according to Lancaster County District Court records. According to the records, Alford allegedly told the girl after each alleged assault to not tell anyone.

Alford played tight end for Nebraska in 1993 and 1994. He was honorable mention All-Big Eight in 1994.

Innocent until proven guilty? If he is in fact found guilty, by all means lock him up chemical sterilization whatever. However, we have seen this numerous times only to have little to no merit. Remember Kobe Bryant? He was found innocent because the girl changed shifts to be close to him, there was two other sperm donors besides his found in her underwear, etc. Sometimes especially sexual assault with a minor, the victim names a violator other than the actual violator because they are someone close to the victim and they were sworn or threatened not to reveal them.

Sorry. 2 completely different things. Kobe is a superstar, and the girl was of legal age. She had something to gain (money, publicity, etc.) by going public whether it happened or not.

This is a 12 year old (8 when it started) going public with a washed up nobody's 'alleged' actions. What does she, her family or anyone have to gain from this? Nothing.

It's a damn shame. Did he play with Shevon Wiggins?

Well...let's do the math. Wiggins was a Freshman in the 94-95 season. So he would have been recruited as a high schooler around 92, 93, 94. People in high school are generally 18 and under, which is a minor.

Alford played around 92-94. So if the team had Alford go and talk to receiver and tight end recruits, or recruits visited campus and met with Alford....he probably played with Wiggins too.

Oh....you mean were they on the same team during college??? Sorry....the 'play with' confused me.

Wiggins had similar criminal inclinations as Alford.
