Would you sacrifice the sellout streak for more things to do around Lincoln and Omaha???

Would you sacrifice the sellout streak for more things to do around Lincoln and Omaha???...I would. <_<

What kind of "Things"?

And why aren't you studying your Bible after chores? Or at least memorizing Huskerpedia..

I remember how much it sucked when I was a Teenager growing up in the largest (pop 5600) town in Phelps County..The nearest college town was 30 miles away..Nothing for us kids to do but "Bomb 4th" which consisted of driving two miles, turning around, driving back, honking at other kids you recognized driving the opposite way, turning around and repeating ~85 times until you went through half a tank of gas.

It was great when I went to UNL..They had the Zoo bar, P.O. Pears, Plenty of girls that I considered out of my league...more than a few parks...And Bike trails.

When I moved to Phoenix, (1990)

I traded ~4 months of bikable weather for ~10 months..

An Ocean less than 7 hrs away, (Which I haven't visited since I lived in Lincoln)

Two ski resorts an hour away which I've only visited once.

Lots more concerts, but I've only paid to see three (Allman Bros/B.B.King/Santana/Buddy Guy, Kansas/Yes, and Page/Plant)...About half a dozen free concerts, though.

I've been to one pre-season AZ.Cardinals game but was really dissapointed in the coaching/level of play.

More entertained watching my nephew in his HS football games.

And..Now...After finding HuskerBoard...What more is there to do out there?

Start your own business like this one

I'm not sure the OP meant if there were some other fun things to do around Omaha/Lincoln he would miss the games to do them. I think there's a portion of fans who think it is the place to be and go because of that. If there were other places ''to be'' we would lose some fans each weekend to those activities. Enough to kill the streak? I don't know. I think the question is asking, even though the die-hards would still go to the game, would you trade the sellout streak (a statistic, if you will) for a beach, mountain or pro football team?

I think the majority of posters get that. What I want to know is, what is there elsewhere that you can't get here? The NFL? NBA? There is night life in Omaha and Lincoln areas, restaurants and bars galore. Always huge events down at the Qwest Center, College World Series, casinos, one of the best music scenes in the country, etc. Just wondering what is out there that Axl can't do here. Perhaps he wants to not have to travel 30 minutes to go to a topless strip club.

Well, growing up in North Jersey besides getting a fresh dose of smog most days, I was able to be at an amusement park within an hour of my house, be at a beach and boardwalk in about an hour - a million things to take your kids to ( more than just a damn zoo), the largest most famous city on the world New York City was reachable in 15 moniutes without traffic. This included Yankee baseball (been to about 80 home games, have seen about a half dozen world class broadway shows (could go on and on and on), Go as little as 45 minutes north and could be a mountain resort, several hours north and I could be in the Adirondacks where you know those Olympics were held. Not to mention literally the best food in the US. Tons of mom and pop shops and eatery's. Instead of eating at friggin Applybees, real sh**ty bagel places, no good diners, no sub shops worth a f'ing damn or Sabretts hot dogs. 98% of the Omaha dn Lincoln suck for food. Housing is cheap but the taxes are outrageous. I have never lived anywhere with so little asthetic beauty, besides Iowa, than Omaha and Lincoln. This is just one example.

Look I'm not baggin on Omaha or Lincoln, I live here and I don't really have a choice, but how in the world can you say Omaha has as much as the other large cities. Have you ever lived outside the Omaha borders? Visiting somewhere simple isn't good enough. Live somewhere for 6 months and see if there is a difference.

I've bitched long enough

Really.... Nothing but chains... Have you looked around Lincoln and Omaha lately? I live in Lincoln and dont eat at national chains, ever, and am spoiled for choice... Granted I cant buy a $90.00 steak, but I guess I will live without. I can drive 15 minutes and be in some of best hunting grounds in the world, drive a little further and I can see the largest bird migrations on earth, I guess our damn zoo (that is considered one of the best in the nation, thank you) will take second place to real wildlife. Heck several hours later I can be in the best skiing in the USA. Sorry we cant compete with Broadway, I'm glad you went to shows. I find most people who bag on our backwater ways, with the "look how much culture we have" argument, never go to those things. Although Omaha gets most of the larger traveling shows. Before you ask, I have lived outside Nebraska, in Vegas for awhile, and on St. Croix USVI, while we had massive choices of things to do, after the first year of living in both places most people did what we do here, drink, watch TV, and do the occasional outing, and say "wow we need to do this more often", but never did. I am not saying that Lincoln/Omaha are the greatest places in the world, but its not as bad as some people are trying to make it out to be. I have traveled to over 20 countries and I'm always glad to return home.

I am sure some other cities (San Fran) would argue they have better food. Many people would argue that London, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, and Rio are just as famous, if not more so than NY. Granted there is no way we compete with the NY/NJ area for places to eat/drink, or for attractions. We have, what, maybe 1/5 the population, although, before the economy imploded, places were opening all the time that were not chains, and put out really good food, and yes I have had food all over the world, so no, taco bell isn't "good" in my book.

Although I think your post was meant to boil some blood, I find its tone to be along the lines of most people I meet from the coasts, especially the east coast, a self assured arrogance, that they are the elite of the country, and center of the world, and we poor little mid-western hicks have really no idea how the world works, even when most of them have barely left the coasts. In the end you can keep the east coast, with its rude people, horrible traffic, oppressive grim, terrible pronunciation (the dictionary does not spell saw with an "r" as in "I sawr her yesterday"), and smog choked air. While I thank you for the being a husker fan, if it's so bad living here, there are many ways to get away. Also you might try looking for locally owned restaurants, theirs tons of choices around here besides crapple bees, but I get the feeling nothing anyone does here, will live up to your "Worlds greatest food lives only in New York" mind set..... OK I too, am done

Reading this thread has made me somewhat more excited to make the move up to Kansas City.

There are a lot of things to do down here in Shreveport but the main problem is the 100-year-old crappy roads. They never ever improve the roads here. Most of the roads are only two lanes with no sholders and high medians thrown in every so often. Everybody drives so slow and lax-brain around here that it is absolutely impossible to not have road rage. Even emergency vehicles with their sirens blaring have a hard time passing on these crappy roads.

Across the river in Bossier City, the roads are way better. Bossier knows how to spend their money to improve their infrastructure while Shreveport always blows their budget on crappy projects that never generate much interest from visitors and citizens alike. The only saving grace is that downtown Shreveport hosts annual events like the Red River Revel, Mudbug Madness and the Louisiana State Fair... and the casinos. But they blow money in trying to interest Hollywood to shoot movies here.

There are two popular movies that were shot here in Shreveport that I know of. "Mr. Brooks" with Kevin Costner and Stephen King's "The Mist".

My parents say Kansas City is way awesome and reading some of your posts ironclads that notion.

I can't wait to get away from here.

Wow, lived in Omaha all my life. I do love many things about the city.

However, there are many many more things to do on the coasts, there is no comparison. I used to think the way some of the posters do, but everytime I travel outside of the midwest, I'm taken aback by what other places have to offer. I'm not saying they are better places to live, that is a personal decision. But there is much more going on. Take LA for example. There are miles and miles of beaches. The beaches have trails, shopping, exercise equipment, b-ball courts etc etc.

The weather is almost always similar to our "top ten" days here, starting out in the 60's and moving to the 70's.

Other outdoor activities. They have mountains. Also, they have lakes, real ones, not the glorified ponds we have. So many outdoor things to do, hard to even list. Scuba diving, mountain biking, climbing, and on and on.

Sports teams, they have them all.

Museums. We went to the Getty, a world class art museum - and free. Untold other museums and artsy stuff.

Nightlife. I'm pretty sure the bars stay open past 1:00. We are not trusted here to stay out that late.

Entertainment - World class broadway shows, musicals. So many clubs, comics. Music. How many bands and musicians come out of that area?

Food, I love the old Omaha steakhouses, they are the unique and the best, but most of Omaha is turning into chain restaurants.

Amusement parks, if that is your thing. 6 flags, disney, the studios, water parks. And yes, the locals go.

If that doesn't do it for you, you are a drivable distance to San Francisco, San Diego, many National Parks, Vegas etc.

You have an interest, you can do it there.

This is not a rip on Omaha/Lincoln, I love the Old Market, no other city near us offers anything comparable to the atmosphere. I can write a hold post about all the things I love about Omaha and the things to do. This is a just a response to people saying we have a much to do here as they do on the coasts and I'm giving LA as an example.

They write entire books about the things to do in a place like LA or Chicago or NY. There is a reason so many people live there.

Again, just talking about the number of things to do. Omaha has less traffic and is hopefully more family friendly. Do people who live in these places take advantage of all this stuff, maybe not. Costs more to live there. I understand. But so much more going on and so much more to do.

I wouldn't, mainly because I don't care if other people across the nation want to attempt to ridicule us for having "nothing but Husker Football".

I'm proud of the sellout streak and the fact that Husker Football is a huge part of the culture here in Nebraska. So we don't have sandy beaches or bleach-blonde bombshells walking down all of our streets, but we still have the most devoted fan base in America and the most intelligent.

For the sellout streak - I'm going with a no on that one.

But...

I have always wished that Omaha got their act together and developed the downtown riverfront area more. And I'm not talking about that bridge they built.

It would be nice to see some of the Old Market ambiance transferred to the riverfront over by Ricks boat yard, down towards the Anchor Inn. Put in some restaurants, more landscaped walkway, some entertainment, and some nightlife. I don't expect it to turn into a San Antonio Riverwalk any time soon, but the city is wasting a great resource in the river.

Try living in Des Moines for a while...your fantasy would be finally getting to move to the big metropolis of Omaha/Lincoln.

Des Moines is the Cozad of Iowa.... <_<

Do they still do Seniom Sed over there? I went to that a couple of times. It was fun, and we don't have anything like that in Lincoln.

Nope...aside from Blues On Grand on a Wedensday night, it's a ghosttown there after dark.
