I have a friend whose mom works at UNL and shes a freshman this year and i know that she gets half tuition paid every year, I don't know if the situation is the same for coaching personal or not...

There is probably some athletic stipulation in place by the NCAA.

I would not imagine us giving this kid a scholarship if he could go to school here for free.

Bo Pelini might have been born at night but not last night.

:yeah I remember reading something about NCAA restricting this, need to dig it up again to be sure.

He doesn't get a scholarship thrown at him and Jake Cotton does?

Maybe, just maybe, the coaches actually see something in Jake? Maybe there is SOMETHING else there other than his last name just being Cotton?

Nah. The 6ft7 265 lb son of a former NFL lineman and brother of a D1 TE probably has nothing to offer. Here at NU we recruit kids that suck obviously.

The point being made is that a scholarship wasn't necessary because as a son of a school employee, he would have free tuition. Why give scholarships to those student-athletes?

He doesn't go to school for free.. Having a father that is a former employee it isn't a free tuition. I'm pretty sure it used to be $1 a credit hour. That doesn't include books or room and board... which are by far the more expensive portion of the tuition.

Only tangentially related, but I'd like to see some actual figures before you make a claim like room and board + books are "by far" more expensive than tuition.

I guess it depends on what the in-state tuition is, but this is generally not the case?...

the university estimate for annual tuition for a full-time, undergrad student is just under $7K. room and board is closer to $8K. you can find this information on the following link:

also, i don't feel like finding it again, but i previously found some information on the university website that explains their tuition reimbursement for employees and it is not a blank check. it covers a certain number of tuition hours per year (think it might have been 15 per YEAR). room and board did not seem to be included.

i haven't bothered looking up the NCAA rules yet, but it is an interesting question.

edited: ok, here's the link to the employee tuition reimbursement info. it is indeed capped at 15 hours per year.

Note that the 2nd semester i was taking 19 credit hours, which is why the Tuition/Fees > Room & Board for that semester.. Overall, tuition and fees was $6788.80 while Room & Board was $6923.00. Then when you add in books, i spent about $900 total on books that year (can't look it up to the penny any more) so roughly 7800 for Room/Board/Books.. I don't know what your definition of "by far" is or anything, but I guess i'm just looking at it as $1000 is a lot of money, even if "relatively" it isn't as much as it seems to the eye.

I just saw the official walk on list and it included a kid named Mark Pelini for Cardinal Mooney in Youngstown, OH. Anyone know if he's related to our Mark(Bo)? I would think they are but I guess I'm just not looking hard enough.

MODs - If this is posted somewhere else, feel free to delete.

Thanks!

Mark Pelini will walk on to the Husker football program after helping Cardinal Mooney High School to a perfect 15-0 record and a victory in the Ohio Division III state championship game as a senior. At Cardinal Mooney, Pelini helped pave the way for fellow NU recruit Braylon Heard, who rushed for 1,973 yards and 24 touchdowns last season. Mark is the nephew of head coach Bo Pelini and defensive coordinator Carl Pelini.
