Actually, given what has been going on at Miami for the last ten years, and since the early 80's truthfully, I could argue that anybody but Miami deserved it. Instead, we have worry about us winning and other teams losing a certain way. What fun... I think Super-Conferences are a step towards that. Right now the BCS should stay in place until the dust settles from conference movement. After that, we will probably see a playoff. Quote Link to comment

They were most definitely the best team that year and they sent (what seemed like) about every single person on that team to the NFL. But given what has come out about them, they didn't really deserve it. But at the time, they did. Quote Link to comment

HuskerT Posted November 2, 2011 Share Posted November 2, 2011 Back on Friday November 23, 2001, the Nebraska Cornhuskers were in prime position to play the Miami Hurricanes in the BCS National Championship game. The Huskers were 11-0, they were going into a huge game against Colorado, and also had Heisman winning quarterback Eric Crouch on their side. Later that day, those dreams were thought to be dashed as the Buffalos raced out to a 35-3 lead and never looked back as the Huskers fell 62-36. Everyone thought the Huskers were virtually out of the National Championship picture because they were not even going to play in the Big 12 Championship. A bid in a less relevant BCS bowl was inevitable (so we thought). The next day, a formula was derived for the Huskers to make it to the BCS National Championship game without winning or even playing for the Big 12 Championship. Without getting into the actual formula, I will tell you what took place over the next 14 days in college football. After the Husker loss, the Oklahoma Sooners thought that they now had a chance to get to the Big 12 Conference Championship, and later the BCS Championship. All the 10-1 Sooners had to do was beat a lowly 3-7 Oklahoma State Cowboys squad. Oklahoma came out flat that day and lost 16-13. This was the first domino that went in the favor of the Huskers. The next two weeks in SEC play were huge for the Huskers. The Florida Gators (ranked number 2 in the BCS) who if they could win out would make the National Championship were upset in Gainesville by the Tennessee Volunteers 34-32. Tennessee then jumped up to the number two spot in the BCS and with a win over LSU in the SEC Championship, would have claimed a spot in the National Championship. Then came Conference Championship week, and the real drama began. Nebraska had now jumped to #4 in the BCS and needed two huge upsets to possibly have a chance at getting to the National Championship. They needed the three loss LSU Tigers to upset the #2 ranked Tennessee Volunteers, and they needed the #5 ranked Colorado Buffaloes to upset the #3 ranked Texas Longhorns. LSU took care of business early by beating Tennessee 31-20. It then came down to the Colorado vs. Texas game. The Huskers and all their collective fans were cheering for Colorado in this game to not win by too much, or they could possibly jump the Huskers in the rankings. Colorado upset the Longhorns in a crazy game 39-37. The margin of victory also helped the Huskers. The Husker fans knew there was a chance, but would the pollsters and the computers put Nebraska at #2. The BCS bowls were announced on the Sunday after. Three teams thought they had a claim for the #2 spot--the 10-1 Huskers, the 10-1 Oregon Ducks, and the 10-2 Colorado Buffaloes. Oregon’s only loss came to came to an unranked Stanford team 42-49. The Buffaloes two losses came to a good Fresno State team and an earlier regular season loss to Texas. Nebraska was blown out by Colorado in their only loss. The only arguments seemed to be between Colorado and Oregon. Oregon had won a weak Pac 10, but had only 1 loss. Colorado had won a strong Big 12, had beaten Nebraska, but had two losses. The Huskers sat back and watched as the selections were handed out. The first bowl game to be announced was the Fiesta Bowl, which usually took the Big 12 and Pac-10 champion, unless one of those teams played in the National Championship. The teams ran over the screen Colorado vs. Oregon. Nebraska fans rejoiced, as they now knew their destination would be the Rose Bowl, which would later hold the BCS National Championship. Nebraska had beaten out the Colorado Buffaloes by .05 points in the BCS, mostly because of their strength of schedule in the non-conference. Nebraska would later go on to lose the National Championship 37-14 to the Miami Hurricanes. But theoretically Nebraska is not out of the BCS National Championship in 2011. As you can see crazier things have happened. Yesterday, I wrote about how Nebraska made it to the 2001 National Championship in what has to be the most unusual and sadistic way ever. Well I am here to tell you that Nebraska is not out of the picture this year. I will give you a detailed description on what must happen for Nebraska to play for the BCS National Championship in 2011. Currently Nebraska is ranked number 10 in the BCS. The teams ahead of them include Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Boise State, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Oregon, and South Carolina. All of these teams must lose one or two games for Nebraska to make it. I will begin with what must happen for the Huskers. 1. Nebraska needs to win out, and beat Wisconsin in the Big 10 Championship handily. For Wisconsin to even get to the Big 10 Championship, they must win out, and have Penn State lose 2 out of their last 3 games which include Nebraska, Ohio State, and Wisconsin. Wisconsin then needs Ohio State to lose one of their remaining games which include Indiana, Purdue, Penn State, and Michigan. Nebraska destroying Wisconsin in a rematch would work wonders in the eyes of the voters and the computers. 2. In the SEC, LSU needs to beat Alabama handily, which would take Alabama out of the SEC Championship because they were in the same division. LSU would then need to lose to Arkansas in the final week of the season, and lose in the SEC Championship. 3. In the Pac 12, Oregon would need to lose to Washington or USC, but beat Stanford. This would then knock Stanford and Oregon out in consecutive weeks. Even if Oregon/Stanford wins out, they could still lose the Pac 12 championship and that would knock them out. 4. Again in the SEC, South Carolina would need to beat Arkansas, and South Carolina would then need to lose the last game of their season to Clemson. 5. In the Big 12, Oklahoma needs to lose to either Baylor or Texas A&M, and then beat Oklahoma State in the Bedlam game. 6. Boise State can go undefeated, and we would still hop them. If all this happens, Nebraska will make the BCS National Championship, guarantee. But the odds in my mind are about 500 to 1. We can work with those. The thing is, it would not surprise me to see at least one team in the MNC with a loss, there are still a ton of games to be played. However, I think it would be a pretty peculiar year for us to end up there having lost a game in the manner we did. typically teams with a loss in a title game had a close loss. The thing I don't understand is why you say LSU needs to lose two games? They only need to lose the SEC title game to bar them from the BCS title game bc you have to win your conference in order to go now (kinda because of us lol). My theory on LSU losing two games would be knocking Alabama out of getting into the National Championship without playing for the Conference Championship. Because Alabama would have lost to an LSU team, that with two losses, is probably know where near the Top 10. Quote Link to comment

You have to win your conference to qualify for the BCS National Championship Game. Also the Championship Game in '07 #1 Ohio St vs #2 Florida was a bigger a$$ kicking then '03 Miami - Nebraska NCG.
