ladyhawke
*Mods if this topic has already been discussed please delete this post* I was listening to 1620 the Zone the other day and they were talking about the awarding of the Blackshirts. They had Jason Peters on and they asked him what he thought about it. He said he thought it was awful. It watered down the tradition of the Blackshirts. He said that some of the kids that played really well never saw the Blackshirt until their senior year. He said that he didn't think that the current staff really understood the significance of the Blackshirts. What do you all think? I tend to agree. It takes away the value of the shirts to give them out like a 'participant award'. What's your vote? Quote Link to comment
NEWICOsker
I think college football is different than it was when Jason played. There tends to be a lot more specialist packages and roles... Dime, Nickel, Peso, 3-4 versus 4-3 depending on the situation, etc. Quote Link to comment
Excel
So.... when do we see the Blackshirts handed out? Who all has Blackshirts? Quote Link to comment

No, the sheer numbers hasn't increased... The number of players that should be consider starters has though. Against Northwestern, the starting defense will look very different than it did against Michigan State. Not because anyone was benched or isn't truly a starter, but because there is such a difference in personnel packages. Quote Link to comment
knapplc
I understand where JP is coming from, but I don't think he has much of a beef. The way Bo runs his defense is VERY different than McBride. Bo substitutes way more, to the point where I don't think the starter position plays all that many more snaps than the second string. I may not entirely agree with the way Bo hands them out, but 20 makes sense the way he does things. 2 Quote Link to comment

JTrain
I get that guys are rotating a lot, but I still think 20 is too many. Let's be honest, there are at least 4-5 of those guys that have not played up to a Blackshirt level of defense. Often times nowhere near that level. I don't mind giving out 13 or so to account for our primary packages, but not 20. 1 Quote Link to comment

Mulletpelini
It's Bo's team. If he feels that many get blackshirts then so be it. He also decided all season til now none of them got it. Quote Link to comment
wildman
To me Jason doesn't really have an argument any more cause the blackshirt tradition was lost when Charlie Mcbride left. To me since then the blackshirts have become nothing more than just a different practice jersey. Quote Link to comment
Pedro Guerrero
It has been a shell of its self for almost 10 years. Quote Link to comment

BIGREDIOWAN
I don't agree with Jason, but I can see his point. Problem is we have alot of guys who contribute on the defensive side of the ball just as much as the starters.................is Bo supposed to just forget about those guys? Quote Link to comment
