SI: Alabama 90s Nebraska Imitation

Make no mistake, if Bama beats ND, it'll be quite an accomplishment. However, what gets overlooked and this article indirectly mentions it without going into further detail, is that our 2nd string QB (who wasn't 100% healthy himself) was responsible for winning 60% of those games as a starter during that undefeated '94 title run. How many teams can say they won a national title on the back of their 2nd string QB for 60% of the season? Let alone having to start their 3rd string walk-on QB on the road against an undefeated (16th AP/11th Coaches) KSU? Also let the record show that our 2nd string QB beat (2nd AP/3rd Coaches) ranked Colorado, when national pundits were CERTAIN we'd lose that game because of our 2nd string QB. Some had the audacity to say even if Frazier was healthy for that game, we'd still lose. Yet our beloved 2nd stringer came through looking like an NFL QB that day and the rest is history.

 

But seriously, the most impressive part of that 90s run, IMO, is the '94 season due to the setback @ QB and the fact that our undefeated season relied heavily on our 2nd and 3rd string QB in key games. Quite unheard of in college football history. That'll always be what makes NU's dynasty run in the 90s unique.

Let's not forget the LP phiasco of 95 that could've derailed this team. I put the stats on a CBS article touting "how could anyone argue against bama being the best dynasty ever"....simply put, most of the key reasons have already been mentioned...but to add on....we never lost at home during that 4 year run (didn't even lose at home the two years prior), had 7 shutouts, beat 4 teams in 95 that FINISHED in the top 10, 2 in 94 and it should also be emphasized that counting us we had 4 teams from our conference finish in the top 10...so it could be argued that the Big 8 equalled the mighty sec in competitive balance...

They pulled this sh#t when Miami played Ohio St in 2002. Look what happened. Did it again when USC played Texas in 2005. Look what happened. Put teams on the pedestal before they actually climb up there, and they'll for sure fall off.

Not sure when the SI curse became known as the SI curse, but if we assume it's been there since its inception, then Nebraska managed to escape the SI curse in 1971.

Hmmm...an article about how a team had the best run in all of college football, and it was because of hard work, dedication, teamwork, and commitment? That wouldn't fly in today's SEC.

 

With apologies to our Georgia posters (who have been exceptionally civil and great to have around), today's SEC appears to be more about paying players, over-signing, and lack of commitment to players on the part of the coaching staff.

 

Frankly, Alabama's run is as artificial as SMU's successful run of the Pony Express days. It's just now, the cheaters have convinced the low brow among us that cheating is rampant, won't be reigned in, and should be accepted as part of the collegiate game.

I respect what Alabama has done because Nick Saban is using the Nebraska model of the 90's to do it (Because he respects what Nebraska did and wanted to do it himself). I've heard from people close to Alabama that when Nick Saban got there his dream team to create was 90's Nebraska. He wanted the biggest, baddest dudes in the country to come play for him and he wanted to be the most physical team in college football. Nick Saban has told many people his Nebraska model. Remember we took it to Saban in 95 when he was at MSU, so he saw up close and personal what 90's Nebraska football looked like.
