You don't need to have played football to make observations about it. You don't need to have played football to officiate it. You don't need to have played football in order to coach it.

It sure as hell helps though. I have never met a person that actually understands the deep down physical roots of football that never actually played it. That includes leach and mangino.

As much as people bag on sports broadcasters and sportswriters, they pay attention to this stuff for a living, and even if you disagree with their opinions, they're not idiots. In fact, they're a lot more knowledgeable than most posters here, maybe even the vast majority. They make bad and good decisions just like the rest of us.

It may add to your knowledge to have played football, but I don't think it gives you a major advantage over those people who have not. If you go down the vein of you have to played it to understand it, then you have to have played college ball to understand it, major college ball, as a starter, as a starter with significant playing time, etc. etc.

 

Even then, it would be like, "Hey, you played DB, there is no way you would understand the battle in the trenches." Or "Hey, you have never been a kicker, so you don't know the pressures that we kickers face." etc. etc.
