Popular Post knapplc
A little late getting started here. 2:13 and no Bo. And we have Bo. Excited about this class. Appreciate everyone's efforts everyone worked hard. Lots of people to thank for this class. 15 walk-ons. 13 that can be announced, two more work in progress. Class adds a lot to the football team. Lot of character, kind of kids Bo wants to coach. Braylon Heard and Chase Rome leaving the program. Addressed the lines quite a bit. Brought in 10 guys on the defensive line in the last two years. Should make a difference. Bo thinks all six guys they brought in on the line could be ready to go right now. Depends on how they pick everything up. All six have ability and potential to contribute. Throw all the rankings aside across the country. It's all about potential. Bo saw something about how 46 of the top 100 recruits from the last year or two haven't played. There's a lot from now going forward that goes into making championship football players. In Bo's opinion they got two of the best defensive linemen in the country. Really excited about them. They're going to turn over every stone to find their guys. They're particular in who they go after and why. It's not just ability. It's film, character, intangibles, guys they think fit their program. That's important to Bo & the staff. Some kids they recruited early on they later decided they weren't guys they wanted in the program, but at the end of the day Bo likes the group they brought in. Talking about how it's such a team effort to bring in this class. Culmination of a lot of hard work today. Team effort. Recruiting is a whirlwind. Commitments don't mean a heck of a lot. With some kids they do, with some they don't. You know as a coach when a kid's commitment isn't worth much. You have to keep recruiting right to the end, and there were some coaches on the phone with some kids last night. You don't think it's over until you get that fax. Things change daily in the recruiting world. Bo thinks the coaches, the administrators and the NCAA need to get into a room together and develop an understanding so the people making the rules have a good idea from the coaches what the challenges are. High School coaches involved, too. Until that happens it's not going to get fixed. The big class, 26 commits, brought attention to this area how crazy this process is. The High School coaches that Bo talks to are concerned about how this is going down and how it's going to affect their kids. Bo thinks the biggest impact of the new rules is going to impact the High School kids first and foremost, and that's the problem. They're going to spend too much time on the phone and texting instead of paying attention to class, which is what they should be doing. This can also affect the players on your campus because the more time you have to spend with the bells and whistles of recruiting these kids, that's less time you can spend with the guys already there. There are a lot of different levels this is going to affect. Bo's first responsibility is with his wife and kids. Second job is to the kids already on that campus, and last the kids they're recruiting. The perception outside of Nebraska and people who are familiar with UNL know what this university and this state have to offer, they get it. Get the kid on campus and see the passion that surrounds this program is impressive. Also let them see what Dennis LeBlanc and Keith Zimmer can do for them academically, they're impressed. When they walk out the door they need to know that they're ready for the challenges that lie ahead when they graduate college. When kids come in there and parents come in and see that, it sells itself. They see there's no place like Nebraska. Bo coached in Louisiana for a few years, so he's seen some interesting things. Dixon wasn't sure and his mother wasn't on the trip up here, so it's a big step to sign his name and go outside of the box to play football a long way from home. It wasn't an easy thing for him to do but in the end he realized it was the right place for him, and now it's Bo's responsibility to make sure it is the right place for him. Too often the focus leaves the guys who commit early, and that's too bad. There were guys who really helped us finish this class off by staying in contact on Facebook and other things, like Stanton and Banderas. They'll become leaders down the road. Bo's pretty excited about Stanton, thinks he's a tough kid. Makes a great stable of QBs here. Dobson is saying nothing but great things about these guys. Courtney Love is a guy you look at who is really developed and looking good. David Nevell is being exposed to a lot of things for the first time, BJ Samuelson the same thing. Really matured physically and mentally. It's not easy to start early like they're doing with a football team that already knows each other, but we have a team full of good young men who have drawn them in and they haven't missed a beat. Drake Martinez will start at Safety. He's talented. Bo didn't want to pressure him because his brother's here. He wanted him to make the best decision for Drake, and Bo thinks maybe he was a little too hands-off. It started getting close to the end and Bo got on the phone and they made the decision that this was the place for him. Bo says we get the kids that we want. Obviously we're recruiting kids with talent, but we're not filling them full of bells and whistles. It's pretty special, what we have to offer here. So we're looking for a certain type of kid. We want to develop a relationship with the family. Bo's been in the home of every one of these kids. They get to know each other and they're on the same page. No false promises, just that they're going to give them an opportunity and they're going to demand a lot. Otherwise they're going to get what they earn here. Bo spends a lot of time talking about other things than football when he's there. Most of these kids aren't going to play in the NFL. The reality is they're not going to the NFL, so there's a lot more to recruiting than just what's going to happen to these kids on Saturday. Bo says it's nice at times to have scholarships in January available to assess needs, but sometimes he wishes they were all filled by his bowl game. Nothing's certain until Signing Day though, and it's a pretty fluid deal. Bo doesn't want it to happen that kids all sign early. He wants to see what they do their senior year. That's why he wants to slow the recruiting process down rather than speed it up. Lot less mistakes that way. Earnest Suttles is a guy like this. Kevin Maurice is another. Maurice played most of his football on Offense until his senior year. You can go right down the list and see the kids who signed late. Those are just two examples. Talking about one kid that ended up not coming here after being recruited, and saying he got caught up in the recruiting process and not focusing on what was important, and Bo thinks it's not going to work that well for him. They're taking 15 walk-ons, and Jamrog deserves a lot of credit for that. They take the kids that are right for us, and a lot of those kids will probably play for us and help us. Heard and Rome - they'll stay this semester on scholarship. The scholarship doesn't rescind until July. Rome is transferring due to mutual consent. He thinks it's best he plays in another program and Bo agrees. The door was open for Heard and if he rethinks things, he could come back. Bo thinks the world of him, but right now his mind's at another place. Bo wishes him luck. Bo and the staff are very consistent from the day they meet the staff until they graduate. The best guys are going to play, and they get that by competing. That isn't going to change. We're going to lose some kids, but that's not going to change. The kids who walk out on the field are going to have earned it. No kid going in this program has any reason to believe Bo is going into a recruit's house saying you're going to start from day one. That doesn't mean that a kid isn't going to leave now and then. We probably average less than the national average of kids leaving programs. It's going to happen. In Bo's mind if they leave they're probably better off somewhere else. Bo wishes them well. Talking about the 500 mile radius and Missouri is part of that. They play good football down there, and next year should be good for football down there. Bo has done some Junior recruiting already. Wants to get into St. Louis more, too. They need to stay close to home, but they need to find kids that will help them win championships. Missed whatever Bo said about a poll. Can't hear the reporters asking questions, so whatever he was talking about, I didn't hear it. They're going to try to use every ounce of depth they have next year, and there's a number of new recruits Bo thinks can be a part of that. Bo says one mistake he made last year is that he redshirted too many kids last year. Kicked himself for it. Live and learn. You think back, you evaluate and sometimes you have to learn from your mistakes, too. Bo saying legacies and Nebraska kids are as important as the walk-on program. The biggest challenge you have as a coach is bringing kids in from across the country and getting them all to buy into this culture. We have a unique culture from anywhere in the country. That's why walk-ons and legacies are important - they make the culture stronger, faster. Helps with this class. Bo says everyone will be ready to roll for Spring but Thad Randle. Had his knee cleaned out. Sucked it up all year. Played hurt all last year, but he'll be 100% next year and that's really good news. When he's healthy he's a good football player. Up front we're going to be athletic and versatile. Bo's excited about the D Line. That's it for Bo. Going to zip up these posts into the OP. 10 Quote Link to comment
