Racism Alive and Well

I didn't think I attacked husker_99, but I apologize if I did!

I'm just stating facts, and the facts are that illegal immigrants not only don't cost us money, but they actually provide a much needed boost to the economy.

I don't know about that they do end up taking the lower paying jobs. I am sure they provide a little boost. It's hard to get a good job when you don't have a social security card. In some respects because they are willing to work for less they also drag down the money an employer is willing to hand out. why pay an American a decent salary when Jose from Mexico will do it for minimum wage?

That's not the problem, though. A lot of illegal immigrants are willing to do any work they can for money. That usually means they're gonna be doing jobs that regular Americans don't want to do, like working in fields picking vegetables for twelve hours a day. If you want to "solve" illegal immigration, you need to punish the employers that do hire illegal immigrants. We don't need to do that though, because illegal immigrants ARE good for the economy.

Except for we are catering to them. Instead of asking them to speak English we comply with learning Spanish.

What is the official language of the United States?

what is every child taught in school as their main language?

What difference does that make? What is the official language of the US that you want immigrants to assimilate to?

Yes, racism is still alive. It's bad enough when it targets an adult but seems much worse when directed at a young boy like this. I guess this is just one more reason to stay away from Twitter and tweets. I never have understood the draw of it to begin with. Ya know what? I don't care what somebody thinks or has to say about virtually anything unless they are speaking directly to me or in the context of something I care about (i.e. a thread/forum I am following on someplace like HB). This particular case is bad but I really have to wonder about people that get all upset over what some random a-hole said about some random event that really had nothing to do with them. Quit following Twitter and reading tweets and you'll be subjected to a lot less comments that make you question humanity. There is not one thing I am missing in life by not semonding or reading tweets. I would highly recommend it.

Seems about like the person who once said:

Yes. Drunk Driving is alive. People go to parties, drunk too much beer and drive drunk. I guess this is just one more reason to stay away from 16 oz red plastic SOLO cups. I never have understood the draw of it to begin with. Quit going to parties where beer is served in 16oz red plastic SOLO cups and you'll be subjected to a lot less comments that make you question humanity. There is not one thing I am missing in life by not going to these type of parties. I would highly recommend it.

Afterall, the best way to stop racism and discrimination is to look the other way and avoid places where you might witness it first hand. Well stated.

WTF are you babbling about? My comments were about the waste of time and energy that is Twitter. Nowhere did I indicated that ignoring the problem makes it go away. But if you're going to troll for racist comments on twitter, you're going to find plenty and it will give you a skewed sense of how pervasive the issue is. Might wanna stop by the mechanic and have em look at that thingy that controls comprehension.

yeah you're right why waste time learning English and force everyone else around me to speak Spanish. They don't need to assimilate into America they will just force their ways on us whether we want them to or not.

to be fair, spanish is a superior language (just like the metric system is superior to the imperial system). but no reasonable person should actually fear that they will have to learn spanish or that spanish will somehow overtake english has the prevailing spoken and written language in america. english is a dominant language around the globe, for goodness sake.

I've taken several Spanish courses and know how difficult it is to learn a different language. I don't believe we can reasonably expect a person who works 12 hour night shifts and raises a family to take the time to learn something as complex as the English language. It really is unfair to characterize them as arrogant and lazy in light of what it takes to fully assimilate into a different culture and learn a new language.

Never has been a official language but logic would dictate that English would be the top vote getter but has failed. Let's see Airline Pilots, medical personnel, government officials and military, tech geeksters and such all converse in English for the most part. And that seemingly unimportant document the Constitution was kinda written in a weird English. :D

Hypothetically, if you or anyone was going to move to France, Sweden, Switzerland any of the other utopia's rated above the US in quality of life. If you had an burning desire to move would you:

A. Just move over there and attempt to adapt?

B. Try to learn some semblance of the language prior to said move!

Stop and think for a second; do you want 10-30 million people granted driver's licenses the majority of whom can't read English so they take the DL test in spanish. Ain't seen too many roadsigns in spanish even in one of the most liberal of states Kalifornia. Not that it matters on the freeways on the left coast :D

I've taken Spanish as well. But if you live in this country for 10 years and still can't speak any English you aren't trying. No it's not unfair.

In Germany, as with most other European countries, they have to learn their natives languauges as well as english..

1. It's Europe, the countries are small so a lot of them already know like 3 or 4 other languages. 2. English is recognized as the International Business Language of the World.

No I wouldn't expect them to know before they move but atleast try to learn. try to assimilate.

I'm all about immigration and I'm all for Path to Citizenship and all that jazz, but count me as someone who thinks we should have an official language (English) and we should require immigrants to learn it. Too onerous, you say? Why? We did this in the 50s, and it was OK to require illiterate European immigrants to attend night classes back then (both branches of my wife's family can attest to this). If we could do it in the past, why can't we do it now?

To me, this is a question of creating and perpetuating a cultural identity. America is The Great Melting Pot, and we should welcome immigrants with open arms. The more diverse this country is, the better. But while we should embrace the cultural hodgepodge these immigrants will bring to the table, we should NOT give up who/what we are to get them here. We're giving them the greatest gift of all - American Citizenship. The least they could do is to make every single effort to fully integrate into this society.

They're choosing to come here, after all. That's great - we want them. But there are a few simple, common-sense requirements that go along with that immigration. I don't think it's too much to ask.
