Happy Birthday President Ronald Reagan

Recommended Posts

Wasn't there some back channel stuff going on so that the hostages wouldn't be freed until after the election?

Isn't he also in part responsible for the increase in higher education related debt? Which is a major issue some 30 years later.

It's funny how the more stupid the republicans get at tearing down Obama, the more outrageous the dems get at trying to act like Reagan was the devil.

Devil? No. Great President? Again, No. The foundations he laid are the core problems with wealth inequity now. And the attempts to deify him need to end. Particularly from people who are vehemently against actions he took. (Amnesty anyone? Deficit spending anyone?)

People get warm fuzzies from memories because he looked and sounded good on TV, absolutely shocking, given he was an actor, I know.

Nobody here is saying he's the devil, we're simply pointing out that with 30 years of hindsight there's quite a few major flaws that have been uncovered.

We have the normal anti-Reagan talking points going on here. Reagan had his flaws, but I'd rank him just behind FDR as the most impactful president of the last century. Too many forget the mess we were in at the time - both economically and with our foreign policy. The moral of the country was at its lowest point since Vietnam and that all changed. ZROD, you mention that historical hindsight has revealed flaws - however, as a general trend history has viewed him more favorably as time has gone by. As a major player in ending the cold war, he had a major impact in a positive way on the country - you might remember the 'peace dividend' created by the ending of the cold war - it is too bad other presidents afterwards squandered the 'dividend' over the years. One of last century's longest extended economic recoveries occurred during the 1980s and through the next decade. Yes, some people were left behind - true of every recovery. The same can be said of the Obama recovery - which is far less robust than that of the Reagan recovery.

I know Dems who absolutely despise the guy and claim he is the worst President in the history of our country. That's akin to someone claiming Obama is destroying America and our way of life. It's total BS.

We would all be better off if he was still born? Really? Play party politics much?

Both sides have their Presidents they love to put up on a pedestal and dream about and make better than they actually were. Heck, I always find it funny when some really liberal person just fawns all over President Kennedy. In actuality, along with him fighting for equal rights, his economic plans were much more conservative than any liberal would even think about supporting.

Reagan did some very good things. His economic plans took us out of the total crap that Carter left us. Did they go too far? Should have they been reversed earlier? Maybe. But, he brought the country together when it was completely split apart.

Actually, we need a President right now with that type of personality that can accomplish cooling the fires that burn between political sides.

Hey, you don't have to insult me and call me a a Democrat just because I think the guy was human garbage! I'm a lefty for sure, but I make the most wild eyed Democrat look conservative by comparison. There's exactly zero American presidents on any pedestals around here, I assure you. In tight races where every vote might make a difference, I vote for the least awful option. Otherwise, I'm the guy that usually laments that the greens, socialists, etc. are too conventional and conservative. It's not party politics to wish that they guy had never lived; it's believing that the world would be a better place if we'd all been spared the machinations of him and his ilk, regardless of their virtually meaningless party affiliation.

Speaking of ilk, your dribble is normally something I wouldn't respond to, but I couldn't let this go without comment.

I guess if you make the most far left wild eye Dem look conservative as well as the greens and socialists - you must be closer to Stalin than any reasonable Dem would ever dare to venture. Welcome to the party (Communist) that killed over 100 million during the last century. Just the party that Reagan sought to destroy from his time at the screen actors gild in the 1940s to his 'ash heap of history' and 'tear down this wall' speeches. No wonder you dislike him so much - a blind man full of foolishness.

Listen and read, you might learn something but I doubt it.
