NUinID
All preseason he seems very much of the opinion that NU is really going to struggle offensively. Personally I don't think it will be a thing of beauty all the time, but I get the feeling he thinks it is going to be downright ugly. I just I am wondering what he thinks he is seeing that he thinks is going to be so bad. From the article today he is really down on the running game IMO. I tend to think that our defense is playing a big part in why the inside run game has looked very hit or miss. I also think the pass game is rounding into shape. I believe it when MR says they are going to play to our team's strengths and do what we do well. I just have a pretty good feeling about things this year. I don't think the offense will be hitting on all cylinders to start, but I think it will have its moments. What do you guys think? http://www.omaha.com/huskers/mckewon-huskers-must-excel-in-other-phases-while-offense-gets/article_4a3c4cfb-3734-595b-a809-569632eccc71.html?_dc=281476131174.7134 Quote Link to comment

I hope the run game is what we fans think it will be, if not we may not have the passing game or q/b to make the defense worry, about stopping anything but the run. He writes maybe its our two great tackles, that make our run game look bad. If that's the problem, it could be a real long season, because there are a lot of teams with great d-lines we will see this year. I always think we can be better, and this year is no different. GBR!!! Quote Link to comment
Mavric
I guess there is at least one dissenting vote: Quote Link to comment
DomiNUs
I think a lot of people, including Sam, are drawing off past experiences. This situation is eerily similar in a number of ways to when BC took over. Everyone is hoping that it won't be like that, myself included. Quote Link to comment
husker_rob
Yeah, his latest article is pretty discouraging, for sure. And I certainly hope he's being overly pessimistic, because our defense is going to be challenged a lot by BYU (I'm thinking like we were against Wyoming a couple years ago in that opener). I really respect Sam's eye. He really seems to understand the game. Kind of scary. 2 Quote Link to comment

GBR!!! Yeah, I know he says it, but I don't get the feeling that he really believes it. Listen to some of his pod casts with Severe and I really get a feeling he is not sold on things. Same is normally very realistic IMO about things. He just seems very pessimistic about things to me. I may be reading to much into it, but it is just what I see when I read his stuff and hear him talk. Quote Link to comment

I really respect Sam's eye. He really seems to understand the game. Kind of scary. Living in Idaho, I have a different view of BYU than most in Nebraska. You guys see a team that for the past 2 years beat Nebraska's nemesis(Texas) and think man these guys must be really good. What you are not seeing is that Texas is not very good right now. What you are not seeing is that besides a very good QB, that is coming off of a very bad injury, they don't have a whole lot of firepower. What you are not seeing is that their defense was pretty bad last year. They gave up 42 to a very average Nevada, 35 to Utah St., 55 to Boise St. and 58 to Memphis. We are talking Memphis. The teams they beat they outscored, they didn't shut anyone down except Texas. BYU will be a good test. They will be physical and mature. But overly talented they are not. Shut down Hill's running and make him throw. I don't think they keep us under 35 pts, and I don't think they score more than 21 at the most. 3 Quote Link to comment
zoogs
Given how much change there has been in the offense and its coaching staff, I'd be really surprised if the transition was in any way seamless. Would certainly feel differently if we had a guy who was proven as an accurate thrower and good decision-maker in the pocket. Right now it's very unclear how everything is going to mesh together. I hope it can and I am really a fan of Tommy. I hope he plays on Sundays. But I still get the feeling that Riley's QB of the future is not even on campus yet. And possibly not even committed. You don't really get to choose such things in transition. Quote Link to comment
teachercd
I think it is a smart move for him at this time. Better a bit "negative", like some fans are, instead of overly positive. I think Sever does the best job out of all the reporters/radio guys. Quote Link to comment
ScottyIce
The biggest thing we will miss about Pierson El is the fact that even if the offense is struggling, he could hit a seam and be gone just like that for 7 to help out a struggling O. Without him, I'm not sure who the next guy like that will be? We might have to drag out longer scoring drives. Who knows.. Quote Link to comment

I think Sever does the best job out of all the reporters/radio guys. It is just a different vibe IMO. Realistic is different than pessimistic. They have 2 weeks to bring things down to what they want to do against BYU. I am confident they will get things done. Miami on the road worries me much more than BYU. Miami can out athlete NU if they get things rolling in the right direction. BYU can't do that. Quote Link to comment

Yeah, that is all I am saying. Sam is usually pretty realistic about the team, but he seems to really think the offense is going to struggle badly. I think it will have some ups and downs for sure, but I just don't see it coming out and laying a big egg against BYU. Quote Link to comment
Dr. Strangelove
Mike Riley has been the most vocal about the run game struggles. It more or less sounds like they're hoping it's just the dominate play by our NFL level DTs. If the run game struggles against our opponents, Nebraska is in for a long season. Quote Link to comment
