I would be very surprised if Taylor sticks around next year. With him being a Jr next season with 0 career carries. He's outtie - which stinks cause I think he's our 2nd best RB on the team currently.

If he was in fact the second best RB on the team than he would be playing.

Disagree. The last staff had Freedom at tight end LMAO - where was that judgment? Taylor is better suited in an offense that is less shotgun runs, but to me he is still the second best option on the team. Gifford started at LB over Newby and I was the first to say how dumb that was....Look who is starting now - Newby.

Is Davie still starting? Nope. I am not saying myself or the fans are always right, but the coaches aren't always either.

Good lord...just stop the "Freedom was a TE so the coaches were idiots" line. I've seen this posted a number of times.

Players come into a program all the time and then switch positions. This happens under every single coaching staff and sometimes as late as even their Junior or Senior year and in pretty much every coaching change in college football.

Freedom was a true freshman in his redshirt season last year. It's not like the previous staff had him out playing TE and sucking for 3 years only to have the new staff come in and discover this great talent as a DE.

Again, looking at his stats in HS and watching the film - seemed pretty obvious.

You seem to base one heck of a lot on HS film when in reality, once that kid gets here, that doesn't mean squat and those films don't demonstrate the conversations he had with coaches on what he wanted to play or what was needed on the team at the time.

Backups are always better than the starters when someone is struggling right? Newby runs well between the tackles and struggles on outside zone which is a result of the line not blocking it well and him being tentative to cut upfield. Other than that I have seen some really good things out of Newby (although he is not Ameer).

People are also overlooking that he had 121 carries coming into this season. I didn't see it from him then or now unfortunately. I don't think he is terrible by any means, but when you see average you need to see what the next guy has.

First of all....what players do I "love".

Second, please explain how watching players this year indicates that the former coaches were idiots for having Freedom as a TE last year as a true freshman?

Third, please inform us of specific conversations Freedom had with coaches on what position the coaches wanted him to play compared to where he wanted to play.

Thanks,

Newby is averaging 5.7 ypc through the first four games. That's pretty damn good. He doesn't make sexy runs like we could count on Ameer to make multiple times per game, but that doesn't mean he's doing a bad job.

Ameer (and Rex and Helu) were superstars. Newby is more blue collar. He's a work horse -- he's been getting those 4 and 5 yard gains you need to keep a drive going.

Plus he's made some great catches out of the backfield.

How can you say he is the 2nd best without ever seeing him have a college carry and coming off injuries? Unless you have watched most practices there is zero way you can claim he is the 2nd best

Watching HS film. Good size, runs hard, can run between tackles, has a good attitude, hard worker. Looked good in the spring game carrying the ball.

How can you claim he isn't the second best on the team at RB? Strictly because he doesn't get any carries?

That's the point I have no idea who the 2nd best RB on the team is and neither do you. If your basing it off HS film not sure how you don't say Newby should be an all American, he had some of the best I've ever seen.

2 serious leg injuries later, i have no idea what we have in Taylor, but I trust that the coaches aren't trying to torpedo the season by not playing our best players.

Never said the coaches weren't playing the 'better' player because they want to throw away the season. That would be stupid. I am saying their opinion on who should get 'X' amount of carries IMO is wrong. That's all it is, an opinion.

High school stats and film are insufficient reasons to suggest one player should play over another in any circumstance. You prove you deserve a shot in practice and that't it. If you can't prove it there then you have no reason being on the field.

And, how has Taylor looked in practice THIS SEASON?

Link to comment

Not really. We have Cross -- but he is in a specialist role. We have Ozigbo, who could be a darkhorse candidate to watch out for as the season progresses. They are definitely high on him. Taylor, Wilbon -- if there's an injury we may have to see what they can do, and maybe either or both will be ready. There's also two walk-ons that coaches have been high on, Nabity and Nelson. Nelson has played in garbage time prior to this year, and he's actually looked capable.

Depth is a big issue in some places, but at RB, it's decent. It's just the top of the RB depth chart has fallen off in a big way since Ameer left to wow NFL fans. Disappointing, yes. Stunning, no. Will it get better? We'll see. It's possible that Ameer will be the best RB Nebraska has had recently or will have for a long time. If that's the case we'll need to make up for it with resurgence at other positions.

We were spoiled for a while with Helu, Burkhead and AA.

The only one who had a rushing TD in the spring game, looked pretty good there. Also practices just fine. Game wise....I can't say since he has 0 carries.

So.....you have been to all the practices to evaluate the RBs?

No sir I haven't...Based on your evaluation you think Newby has deserved 70% of the RB carries? That is more so my concern....
