OWH: Huskers Struggling to Contain #1 WRs

Carroo's arguably more talented than each one of those receivers. Against Nebraska last season, he caught four passes for 121 yards -- in the FIRST QUARTER. Then his starting quarterback got hurt, NU's lead ballooned and the game got out of hand.

Slowing Carroo down won't be easy. But it has to be the priority for Nebraska's defense.

Here's why: Even if the Huskers stuff the Rutgers run game and even if they force a couple incompletions and even if they get a lead -- the Scarlet Knights will still approach pressure situations with a level of comfort because they know they can get the ball to Carroo.

The opponent's No. 1 receivers have caught a total of 72 passes against Nebraska this year -- 24 of those (33 percent) have come on third or fourth down. And that's not counting Allison's game-winning touchdown, or Erickson's 31-yard sideline grab from Wisconsin's own 9-yard line in the fourth quarter or Burbridge's 29-yard catch to pull Michigan State out of a second-and-24 hole Saturday.

This game really does worry me. A lot of people seem to be overlooking Rutgers because of their recent performance, but look at who they've faced the last three games: Michigan, Ohio St., Wisconsin. Three of the top 15 passing defenses, two of them in the top 5. Michigan St. had to score a go ahead touchdown with less than a minute left to beat Rutgers on the road. They're also a team that basically needs to win out to be bowl eligible, and with Army and Maryland coming after us it's entirely possible.

A team with a stud wide receiver, and is hungry for a win.......we better come out guns blazing and ready to duel. Should be a close game.

After losing to Illinois, Northwestern, PURDUE, and almost to Southern Miss I don't know why we think we can look past anyone this season.

Those stats should be enough to have Banker and Stewart gone at the end of the year. Dead last in FBS in pass defense and 33% of their #1 receivers on 3rd or 4th down. This scheme is a joke. We let their QB sit back, we lose. Plain and simple. Id' bring the house every down. Play pressure at the LOS. We are no better with a safety over the top than in man. Go for broke and get to their QB every down.

Lol. Scheme? Or the sh**ty personnel? Sorry, but the corners have steadily gotten better while the safety play has been poor and steadily gotten worse.

...but by every stretch of the imagination, I certainly don't want you installing your philosophy. That's just dumb.

Like being dead last in FBS pass defense is awesome. Or smart. Ironically, we get to Cook and he muffs pass, throwing the ball out of bounds and we win. Pressure works. Rushing 4 against 6 or telegraphing the blitz doesn't.

Sh!tty personnel. Look at Gerrys stats from this year and last. He is almost identical. Oh, and his cratastic safety play? He now leads the D in 64 tackles.....It would also be the most solo and the most assists.....5 pass break ups and the only DB with a forced fumble......Its not the players. Its the scheme.

It's probably both the scheme and the players.

It's neither scheme nor players. It's growing pains. Accept it. Embrace it. Move on.

It's too early to know that. Just like it's too early to fire everyone and their mom.
