Most players improve as they mature and of course he will look better as we block better. It is amazing how good running backs look when they are playing behind a solid O line and getting the right play calls. Barry Sanders would not have been one of the best ever if he didn't have some darn good help up front. Quote Link to comment
Guy Chamberlin Posted August 7, 2016 Share Posted August 7, 2016 I will freely admit that when Ameer Abdullah was a freshman competing with two other freshmen to succeed Rex Burkhead, I predicted he would never start because he went down far too easy on contact. In my defense, Abdullah wasn't a standout freshman, but worked his ass off to become excellent. Quote Link to comment

Newby was the highest touted recruit of the 3, but was inconsistent as the starter last year. Ozigbo probably has the best potential to be the "steadiest" back of the 3. I think Wilbon has the highest upside, given that he was another highly touted recruit, and we have seen him play so little. Just my thoughts. 1 Quote Link to comment

84HuskerLaw Posted August 12, 2016 Share Posted August 12, 2016 Which of the three running backs (Ozigbo, Wilbon or Newby) ends up looking and performing the best is going to be very much indicated by how well the offensive line does in blocking various plays. If we find we match up better vs our given opponent, blocking-wise, on the outside, then we may find running wide is more productive and will need Newby/Wilbon with the most speed to get to the corner. But if we find we are better able to block inside the tackles, then Ozigbo will be the man. We may miss having Cross to rotate with him to give us fresh power inside. I think ideally Riley would like to have bigger RBs who we can throw swing passes and screens to in order to attack the corners and overpower the smaller, fast LBs that pursue laterally. For the big run stopper LBs and big DLs, we want to run around them. Most likely, we'll see a running back by committee approach depending on who we are playing and how they choose to defend us. We need both the scat back and the bruiser back types in order to win consistently. Quote Link to comment

When we played Okie light during Thurman Thomas and Barry's time there, Nebraska's D was better than Okie's O, Barry didn't need much space to pop through and then make that sideways cut and leave a Husker backer or safety grabbing air. His O line was ok, it wasn't that solid. JMO Quote Link to comment
