This is going to be one of the more interesting recruiting cycles in a long time.

Yup.  Since at least the 2018 cycle.

Meh...the 2018 cycle wasn't that interesting to me since from about mid season, it was pretty clear there was going to be a new staff and so anything done before that might as well be ignored.

The 2019 cycle is the first time in....well.....ever....since we actually have the media darling as the new HC and with a staff that has been around the block with each other and have proven they can win.

If we win some ball games this year- it will get real interesting. Pair the hype with results.

So it seems like we are pretty high up on the list for several LB prospects. How many do you think we would realistically take in a smaller class?  I guess the number will be somewhat dependent on what the staff thinks Snodgrass and Jurgens will play.

Nelson and Snodgrass as of now are projecting at LB. Dixon will also have to sit until next year it seems. That's already possibly 3 kids for 19'.

I see Nelson at OLB for sure.  Snodgrass most likely OLB, but they are leaving that open for now.  Dixon is already on scholarship and is a hybrid Safety/OLB, so I'm not sure if I would exactly count him towards the OLB numbers for '19.

That said, I think they'll try to get at least 1 more top end guy (Pappoe would be great) to add some talent at the spot.  I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of attrition at the LB spot too.

So what happens if we someone land Pappoe and Henrich?  I guess in a 34 base thats not the worst problem we could have.

I think Henrich projects as an ILB, so they won't be at the same position.  Plus, Frost wants athletes, I don't think they'll turn away top guys that fit their culture and scheme.

I'm not sure we're in a position to be too worried about having too many good players at a  position.

Extremely preliminary here but it's a starting point.  16 seniors this year plus over-sign by 3 would be 19.  I'm going to use a nice, round 20 - we have to get down 3 spots from where we are currently before fall camp so it might be 22-23 by a year from now.

Priority:

QB - Frost says one every year but it might be two this year - I expect either POB or Gebbia to leave

OT - A continued trouble spot  but we'll see what the new guys can do

DT - Need to re-stock

CB - We'll have to see how the 2018 guys slot in but we don't have a lot of young ones

Current Scholarships/Commits

QB - 1-2 - Max Duggan
RB - 1-2 - Rahmir Johnson, Jouvensly Bazile, John Bivens, Breece Hall, Darwin Barlow
WR - 3-4 - Kyren Williams, Marcus Washington, Cameron Coleman, Garrett Wilson, Bryce Childress, Mycah Pittman, Kyle Ford, Marlyn Johnson, Jameson Williams
TE - 1 -
OT - 2-3 - Jayme Simmons, John Olmstead, Jack Buford
OG/C - 1-2 - McKade Mettauer, William Putnam, Danielson Ike, E.J. Ndoma-Ogar

NT - 1-2 -
DE - 2 - ETHAN PIPERMarcus Hicks, Ty Robinson, Mosai Newsom, Stephon Wright, Keyon Ware-Hudson
LB - 3 - GARRETT NELSON, Nick Henrich, Owen Pappoe, Makobe Dean, Spencer Lytle, Allen Smith, Luke Fulton
CB - 2-3 - Sheridan Jones
S - 1-2 - Jalani Williams, Jalyn Phillips

ATH - GARRETT SNODGRASSChris Hickman, Jeffery Carter

For those of you who really follow recruiting...

Is 2019 shaping up to be the best for in-state recruiting ever?  Or at least in a long time?

It just seems like there are more in-state kids this year who are capable of playing at a high level than ever before.  Asking because I legit do not know.

Yes, definitely. Talent in the state is growing, but this is probably a once-every-ten-years kind of in-state class.

@Atbone95 and @BigRedBuster, seems you two have a difference of opinion.  Which one is more correct?

:dunno

I think we said the same thing.

Best ever, no. IMO, best in a very long time. That almost isn't debatable based on ratings/offers/the works for the prospects in the state.

Not sure how many of the 'offers' reported and listed in the recruiting forum are still current but how many "offers" are normal for a given recruiting year?   I am just curious because it seems like we have a LOT of pending offers when we're looking for around 20 recruits?   We have roughly 230 offers out on the list and I realize this list is those that board members have picked up on and quite a number are from the previous staff so there could well be a significant perentage that are NOT real or no longer effective?

Is it common practice for most schools to 'shotgun' so many offers to seemingly a large portion of the the highly regarded players?

Are the offers only made after detailed preparatory contacts, reviews, etc or do we make a large bunch of offers initially and then gage the interest by the recruits replay back?

First, an "offer" could potentially just mean this team is talking to me. Second, schools do put out hundreds of offers every cycle. Its a numbers game in a sense.

Going to have our work cut out for us....

Illinois and Mizzou will never scare me, not saying we don’t have to work hard, but what we can bring to the table for a student athlete at Nebraska compared to those heaps, isn’t even a comparison.

Haven’t seen his film, but another SD kid. Possibly a PWO offer down the road. Would be good to invite him to a JR Day.

Was this gathering of coaches part of some event or did Held put this together? Pretty cool either way that he got in front of a bunch of HS coaches and made a pitch for DONU. Maybe these kind of things happened with previous staffs but I don’t recall seeing anything about it

Sounds like Beckton is very connected with coaches and trainers in Georgia and Florida so that's a really nice in to have in those areas.

Coaches are going to keep the same format for Florida recruiting as they did when they were at UCF - state is divided into four areas that a coach is responsible for.

Fisher says when recruiting corners they are more focused on speed than size.  They'd take a 5-10 guy who can run over a 6-2 guy who is slower.

Was gone for a few weeks and click into the 2019 offers. That's overwhelming.

Yeah.....I've decided at this point in time, it's best for me to really not even try to learn about any individual recruit unless they start showing some serious interest.  I commend  @Maverick for keeping up on it all.

Not technically recruiting per se but Kyler Reed and a couple coaches from Highland Community College (KS) will be in town tomorrow to get to know the new coaching staff and get some ideas about how they run the program.  Good relationship to have down the road.
