  1. If Eichhorst is involved in trying to punish Gangwish for the raccon kill, Eichorst should be fired immediately because he is too stupid. The fact that he even listened to the PETA freaks is probably enough to fire him and get someone with some courage and common sense.
  2. After more than 50 years of watching Husker football, it is my opinion that running Quarterbacks can throw but not well and usuallly not just when we need it. If we run all of the time, it will be much harder to recruit people with good hands. Some of those have Sunday dreams and want teams that throw to showcase their hands. If we are mainly just a run team, top 20 teams will load the box with 8 or more and flow in the driection of the QB/IBack and linemen flow. We have lost many important games when the running attack came up on 3rd and long. For the defense to play honest, you have to have a credible passing game. The pass, pass. pass, problem is in the OC's mind. We need great linemen to run and control the clock after we get a 3 TD lead and a great passing attack to maintain possession till we score. Devaney told a story once about the Huskers having a reputation of running three time with clouds of dust and then punting. He said in one his first games he called a pass play. It was incomplete but he got a standing ovation.
  3. This just doesn't make sense. Why would USC and Alabama regularly recruit here when they have all that talent in their backyard that they won't have to compete with Nebraska for? However, FWIW Strong had USC, UCLA, and Oregon interested until they looked into him more. The talent is there, maybe not 5*, but 3* from Nebraska is better than 3* from California because they understand the tradition and will play their ass off for NU. I had two sons play in South Carolina and observation is that the star ratings are pretty subjective and not entrirely reliable. The players with the best star ratings were getting the biggest boost from their involvement with workout gyms and trainers. The sports writers could not see every game each weekend and there fore relied many times on the trainers input. This doesn't mean the star ratings may not be true but they may not be accurate either. I read a post by a former player from a championship team say that about 10 of the starters were from Nebraska. We used to get a lot of offensive linemen from in-state and a lot of running backs from Omaha. Maybe we should look for some great athletes with a head on their shoulders work on under some coaches who believe in developing players and teaching fundamentals. My oldest son attended two football camps in Lincoln. The last one was Callahan's first. My son never again talked about going to Nebraska after that camp. He said Callahan ignored everybody but those he invited for a look see. He referred to the players as "product" several times. Seems like he thought the player is a finished product at the college level - maybe some truth to it at the pro level but I think its a bad attitude for any coach to have. I hope Riley and his coaches develop players and motivate them.
  4. I say four is okay if they are selected after all bowl games are played. The playoffs should not be a part of the bowl games.
  5. Don't know all of these backs but I would like to see Imani Cross as a fullback with a runner like Abdullah in a Power I offense.
  6. Hard to imagine he would follow Riley, and take a step down to position coach. If so the guy has no ego..... might still be making more money...? The quote just said that no DC or OC had been named yet. That could still mean that Banker will be designated later as the DC. I hope they get someone else for DC.
  7. Consider our game versus Wisconsin and the OSU-Wisconsin game, we are about 120 points worse than OSU.
  8. I think they should play all bowl games first like they used to be played. Remember when most bowl games were important? Writers would come up with complex win, lose, win big, etc for teams to end up with the top ten slots. After the BCS, the only bowl game that was important was the Championship game. We should have the bowl games played. The arguments over who are the best four should be less after the bowl games. At least the top 4 teams would be more apparent in my opinion. The first playoffs for the four teams should be in mid January and the final championship game played on the day before the Super Bowl. Only four teams would be tied in football in January and those schools would get millions in TV revenue. There may be more than four contenders after the bowl games are played but it will always be less controversial than picking the top four before any bowl games are played.
  9. I did not know anything of Oregon State or its coach. Riley's hiring came out of the ether for me. I do think Eichorst did a better hiring job than Pederson did. I hope it works out. Whatever happens, Riley is not the coach and I will support him. I supported Bo's hiring but was dissapointed when he hired friends with minimal coaching experience for assistants. I hope Riley will get a better set of assistants.
  10. Did not read anything in this thread about honesty and academics. I hope Riley will continue the honest program with regard for personal disicipline (lawbreaking), NCAA rules and academics. I know football is the first priority but I think Nebraska's record for Academic All-Americans is a hallmark for the univeristy. And many of the athletes got degrees in tough academic fields- not give away physical education degrees.
  11. Isn't there the 7-day job opening posted period, or 10 days, or whatever it is? That's probably it. Sunday would make 7 days exactly since Bo's firing. Isn't there the 7-day job opening posted period, or 10 days, or whatever it is? That's probably it. Sunday would make 7 days exactly since Bo's firing. I read on another post that Eichorst is not taking calls from coaches interested in the job. There is no recruiter firm helping him and few rumors from the Athletic Dept about who may be under consideration. Maybe it all means, that Eichhorst has a man lined up now and is waiting for the job opening window to expire? I would like to know because I am curious and am also worried about the impact on recruiting.
  12. I think this discussion is moot until the new head coach is named. He will drive who he brings in and therefore who might stay. Save the talk. On the radion (1620 In The Zone), they seemed to think that Eichorst had things lined up well before the firing and that we should expect a new coach offer before next week.
  13. Its still too early for people to leave. However, we can't lose Gerry. He seems to be only defensive player capable of running down the ball carrier from behine before he scores a TD.
  14. Has anyone seen Solich shopping in a 7-11 on any side of Lincoln?
  15. 1. No humiliating blowouts. 2. Be competitive for four full quarters no matter what the final score. 3. Be .750 won-loss percentage with top 20 teams. 4. Be listed in the top 10 teams during the most of the season. 5. Have SI do another article listing the Huskers as a sports dynastacy again. 6. Have an offensive line that is offensive in nature again. Regain the Lineman U reputation. 7. Restore the Blackshirts aura on the national scene. Become a defensive team that expects to stop opponents on 3rd & short most of the time- especially on runs. 8. Have an offensive team that does not routinely kill drives with stupid penalties. 9. Have a defensive team that does not routinely help the opponents maintain their drives with stupid penalties. 10. Have special teams that proivde a field advantage routinely.
  16. I was a Bo supporter and did not expect him to be fired this year. I thought pressure would be put on him to make staff changes and next year would be his probation year. Now, that he is gone, I don't have any regrets. His blowouts were tough to take and his inability to beat top ten teams was a big mark against him. I was shocked that he was fired before a possible bowl game. I wonder if Eichhorst has a coach in mind that can be hired before the bowl season? I also wonder if Pelini's firing will influence an bowl game offers? I hope the new coach will continue to support the player academic program, maintain discipline without condoning criminal behavior, and be honest with recruiting rules.
  17. I would prefer a new head coach that has been a head coach before- probably a guy who excelled in at a small school or lower echelon Div 1 school. I think its important to hire a coach who been a good recruiter, honest, and proven to be head coach leader of assistant coaches. There a large number of great assistants who don't seem to be able to perform as a head coach. I would lean toward people like, Jim McElwain, Craig Bohl, and Mark Richt. Scott Frost should be considered but he does not have a track record as a head coach. I wonder if Bohl would think about abandoning Wyoming after only one year? I can't see the TCU or UCLA coaches leaving a good set up to start over again.
  18. I am wondering why Cotton was named interim head coach. He has been criticized as a line coach and the offensive line certainly has not been a strong point on our teams for several years now. Anybody know if Eichorst consulted with Osborne over this firing?
  19. Obviously depends on who the new coach is and his friends who are assistants. I would think that Ron Brown and the defensive backfield coach would be considered. They have done well with the running backs and defensive backs- complaints at least. The best recruiters will likely stay to keep as many commits as possible. The guy who got Gregory, Collins and Valentine should be a keeper. The recruiting and coaching for receivers has been good too- maybe that guy stays too.
  20. I think most current players will let the shock wear off and wait to see who is hired. They have time, sweat, academics, and some have scholarships on the line. If they think they will fit in in the new regime, they will most likely stay. The problem may be with the recruiting classes since they mostly influenced by their relationship with their recruiter. I hope it works out okay so we don't have a few weak years before finding out how the new hire pans out.
  21. No matter how this game ends, I firmly believe that Tim Beck needs to be replaced.
  22. Since he is winning 9 out of 13 games in most seasons, I thought "few" was more appropriate than "many". However, that may be semantics if you felt like you needed to commit suicide after witnessing each loss. I still remain a little conflicted about firing Bo now. I always felt that Solich should have been given one more year after he reorganized his assistants. It could not have been worse that getting Callahan and Cosgrove. I think the players are probably good except for maybe the offensive line but its still mainly coaching conditioning, fundamentals, techniques, motivation and game preparation. I remember Bill Jennings stating on Husker football game show with Bob Zenner that they just didn't have the talent. He got fired and went to Kansas taking Gale Sayers with him. A guy named Devaney came to town and went 8-3 with mostly Jennings' talent. BTW, Jennings had recruited quite a few players who went on to be all-pros. The head coach is a big part of it but the assistants spend time with the players and preparing for games. The Head Coach must coach the assistants, movtivate the team, and set the tenor for the team. Bo and his assistants are good enough for a 9 win season and a bowl game. But I don't know if they will improve to the point of being a top 10 calibre team every year.
