  1. What in the heck do you have to base this on? I have watched Riley for several years (since his time in San Diego), he was exalted as the next great Chargers Coach, the same things said about him today (the preseason) are the same ones said back then. he left the Chargers (fired I believe or just quit as I don't remember which) after three seasons and losing record but the fans were more than ready to run him out of town. in his three seasons (1999 - 2001) there his record was 8-8; 1-15; and 5-11. About the same as his career at OR St. So, what makes you think he is going to take NU to a conference championship win? He does win the nicest coach award. maybe he makes me and his own history a liar, I am ok with that as I want NU to win!! Just for the argument, SD had tons more resources then OR St, and still he never had a winning record. I have seen (and so have you) really good coaches win consistently at smaller/less funded programs.
  2. Yes!! Thanks Steve Pederson.. I suspect if Riley finishes the season below 500 (very..VERY possible) he and the AD both may be gone soon.. the fans are not going to tolerate another Billy Callahan. May not be fair to Mike, but the cupboard was not bare when he took over the team.. with the talent on this team, 8-9 wins is realistic and Mike has already lost one of the "should have won" games. Hope Mike turns things around as I want NU to win (I don't want Mike to fail) but I have seen Riley coach the San Diego Charges and he struggled a lot and ending up either getting fired (or quitting), I don't remember which. After which he went immediately back to Oregon St.
  3. Good job, only add I would make is that they should have gone further back to at least 2002 when NU finished 500 or 2003 when the three loses were blowouts (even if the score was close). NU has been on the decline for some time now.
  4. Don't blame ragenose for this. If I remember correctly, he won all of his opening day games with his own players here at Nebraska. Yea because beating Florida Atlantic twice, Western Michigan, Western Kentucky, Chattanooga, Southern Miss, and Wyoming are the same as playing BYU to open the season. And we barely beat Wyoming. Also we were one play away from losing to Mcneese St. Think this is more of an indictment of just how far this program has slipped into being sub-par. Sad part is Riley isn't going to be the next Osborne. He is the opposite of Bo, nice guy, funny, at ease with media. I just think that all that time in Corvallis made him at ease with losing and being mediocre.
  5. We stink and so does Riley, why can't NU get a real coach? worry about one that wins and not weather he's the nicest coach on the planet... This was the second time we fired a 9-3 coach, we learned nothing from the Solich firing... if we're lucky, we win five games.. not to Riley, this is NOT Oregon State... no excuses about being under the shadow of Oregon. He didn't inherit an team without talent, BYU is NOT Alabama. today's performance was Callahan-esc.. Looking at the schedule 5-7 is a realistic possibility.. Glad all you Bo/Solich haters are happy, you have a very sweet coach, cant win the little games or the big games. FYI, he was fired from San Diego Charges, because he couldn't win... Still a very nice man...

  7. OWH what would be his role on this team/staff? the only coaching position open is Wide Receivers.. would love to have him here, just curious what his role would be. Did you look at the date that that was posted? I'm guessing not I always start at the beginning of the thread so I can follow conversation, missed that posting date. my bad..
  8. I understand the Banker skepticism. I'm a little skeptical myself. I liked what Riley said about having 3 guys who have been coordinators on that side of the ball. Doesn't automatically equal success, but if they all fit well in their roles, we should be in really good shape. all that DC history, hope all these chef's don't spoil the broth...

  10. Thanks for the link, I was not a fan of hiring Riley, but I have to admit I really like this coach. he has his work cut out for him and I wish him all the best...
  11. Well we saw what wins last night. A great foundation of solid fundamental football with great strength and conditioning. Once you've got that, then you can do whatever you want. A stable of 4 and 5 star athletes wouldn't hurt either (like OSU).
  12. Solich was the closest, what doomed him was the fact he didn't recruit very good especially at running back (based on how the group as a whole played). when your offensive game plan is Crouch left, Crouch right, if you stop Crouch you win. It would be very difficult to run the triple option without a stable of excellent running backs. TO seamed to always have one (or more) step up every year.
  13. comes down to who's peaking at the right time. OSU peaked at end of season, the team that lost to Va Tech would have been blown out by Oregon. Good coaches will always have their team playing the best ball at the end of the season. Congrats to Urban and his crew for doing just that! Now Urban, feel free to retire back to the broadcast booth... lol.
  14. We will get to see what Beck does under Urban's direction. My guess is that he will have a lot of success.
  15. If we don't win a title in Riley's first 4 years... it will have been 2 decades since our last Conference title. Really don't see us winning conference titles in the next two years.. Hope I am wrong, be glad to be wrong.
  16. If Michigan St can do it, Nebraska sure the hell can. We just need to find the right guy. And it's quite possible we have. We just dont know yet. But to write us off cuz someone appears to be better isnt no good. Indiana marched into Columbus and almost pulled off the win. Anyone can beat anyone. Michigan State under Dantonio has only won one outright B1G title. The predictor was the first five years. Yes, I think we'll be in similar circumstances with Michigan State where we're at least competitive. In the first five years, we are going to be in a talent disadvantage to Ohio State and Michigan. There's a reason Ohio State hasn't lost a regular season B1G game. Meyer walked into a program with a mountain of talent. Riley didn't. I find it endlessly interesting how Nebraska's talent level seems to evolve with the argument. More like "devolve".. were not three deep at any position but it does get old suggesting the cupboard is bare when MR got into Lincoln.
  17. Believe those players were from BC's era and very highly recruited around the country (meaning they had exceptional ability/raw talent). which is to say Bo could develop talent, but Bo truly seemed to have problems recruiting talent to NU. He would get a good one (or exceptional one) here and there but over all his recruiting was mediocre. Example of this would be the USC game, USC has scholarship limitations yet they clearly had the overall better team in terms of talent and athletic ability.
  18. could see this one happening, he has ties to Riley at OR St.
  19. Question, there was a D-lineman who was suspended for exposing himself. I know he has done he community work (repentance) and I believe he was re-instated by the university, has anyone heard if his scholarship will be honored? Sorry, I don't do well with names..
  20. Bo has done this twice. Just so you know. I am not Anti-Bo. Yes, he as a temper and behaves badly at times, loses games at blow-out proportions but I don't think he is a horrible coach. would have helped himself a lot if he would have brought in proven coordinators (especially defense) and let them do their jobs and just ran the program.. I am hopeful that MR doesn't get caught up in micromanaging.
  21. I doubt Riley would even be on the hot seat after year one with only four loses. When I looked at the schedule next year I did see about 5 possible loses (BYU, Miami, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Minnesota). Winning two of these games would be a good year for Mike (assuming he doesn't lose the games he should win). The bar is very high at NU, just ask SE.
  22. If MR can beat a top 10 team inside of two years, he will be an improvement since 2001. That said, I don't care if we have the "nicest" coach on the plant, I want a respectable/ethical coach who wins games.
  23. this isnt no rebuilding project. We have the talent already here to make a legit run at a conference title and in turn, the playoffs. Were sound coaching away. We got a highly expereinced staff in terms of developing talent and tailoring systems to fit that talent. We do not need to be patient for "his guys" to get in here. There will mot be some night and day massive overhaul of the offense. In fact id bet that to the casual non-Xs Os type fan, there wont be any glaring difference at all aside from bein under center here and there, huddles, and a handful of passes to the toght ends a game. Its nit gonna be a culture shock like going from option power to west coast was Looking at the schedule next year i fully expect an 11-1 regular season. Serious. Its all mental. If he gets these guys to all turn the page and buy in that first week of spring ball, then the train will be rollin. O-line will continue to be a problem at least next yr. and will be the most glaring deficiency i really don't think we have really good talent on the O or the D lines.......getting better coaching should help, but a lot of the teams we play have much better line men all the way around.....any back can run through a hole as big as a truck......we need to concentrate on recruiting and developing linemen on both sides of the ball.....when you got "road graders" a lot of better running backs will come into your program, knowing they have a running start on the first couple yards! We may not have the talent on the DL, but I watched most bowl games, and I did not see a single team with the DL standing at the LOS trying to control gaps. If Riley installs an attacking defense with an emphasis on stopping the run, the Huskers will improve significantly. not tons of depth on D line but we have talent. just need to see what the new coaches can do with it.
  24. This in NOT a rebuilding project!!! Riley needs to be competitive and win the games that matter. That is the bar SE set for him.
  25. Great vid, thanks for posting it. he will be fun to watch over the next 2-3 years!
