  1. Haha, I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. The next 20 games are pretty tough (Houston, @ TB, @ Boston, @ NYY, Boston) if they can go 11-9 or better, that would be pretty awesome.
  2. Actually, not a SD guy (definitely a fair assumption tho). I've spent the majority of my life here in NE. I'm just a huge wrestling fan. IIRC, one of the guys who is really big into Nebraska high school wrestling and active on Twitter posted the Trackwrestling or YouTube link and I gave it a couple watches. Casperson gave him all he could handle but Hutmacher just kinda wore him down at the end and got a late takedown.
  3. Would love to see this kid N regardless of sport. He had an epic match against Nick Casperson last year (Casperson was a national top 10 195 lber) in the SD Class A wrestling finals. That was a treat to watch.
  4. That's good to hear. Jay Yencich from USS Mariner does a great job of breaking down the Ms draft picks and minor league stuff and this is what he had to say... http://www.ussmariner.com/ Round One: RHP Logan Gilbert, 6’6″, 225 lbs, 5/5/1997, Stetson 2016: 2-1, 21 G (5 GS), 2.74 ERA in 49.0 IP, 44 H (3 HR), 19 R (15 ER), 43/27 K/BB 2017: 10-0, 15 G (12 GS), 2 CG, 2.02 ERA in 89.0 IP, 65 H (HR), 23 R (20 ER), 107/26 K/BB 2018: 10-1, 14 G (14 GS), 2.52 ERA in 100.0 IP, 60 H (7 HR), 31 R (28 ER), 143/20 K/BB This is a paradoxical one, in that on the one hand, it’s a name I’m fairly familiar with, having been mocked to us by MLB.com most recently and off-and-on by evaluators throughout. On the other, I hadn’t anticipated Liberatore, Gorman, Singer, or various others to be among the available picks at the time, and was starting to think “What about Turang? What about Rocker?” Of course, the scouts themselves have their own preferences, and I had a notion that we might be looking in the direction of the SE, thus lining up with Rocker or Georgia prep Ethan Hankins. I’ll admit, I didn’t bother looking up where Stetson University was, which would have pointed me in the right direction being in central Florida. Gilbert’s a peculiar one, in that he’s a college arm, but doesn’t fit the more moderate ceiling projections that we often tag on those guys, nor is he someone who had a late growth spurt and gained about a foot sometime after junior high. Instead, he’s a converted infielder who didn’t start pitching regularly until late in high school and on into college. It means less mileage on the arm, which is comforting, but it also means there’s more room for potential development in the offerings beyond the general pitching smarts and change-up that appear to already be there. One knock on Gilbert right now is that he’s yet to commit to one breaking ball or another, throwing both but neither as quite a plus. At the same time, I see it as a good match for us, in that we’ve had some success getting our guys to develop a true breaking ball. For whatever else you can say, you can look at the video overlay .gif and see the same basic slot producing both two distinct pitches. For a guy who hasn’t been pitching forever, you wouldn’t anticipate the mechanics being as good as they are. You also wouldn’t really anticipate the numbers being where they are either. As you can see from the numbers above, the hits and the walks have steadily gone down (and the WHIP, for whatever use you have for that) and the Ks have kept going up. The only two real blips that you can see on there are that the home runs seemed a bit excessive this season and that the ERA (again, for whatever use you have for that) went up a little his junior year. As the numbers go, one issue mentioned is that he had some trouble getting going this season, and rather than throwing in the mid-90s, he was down to the low-90s earlier on. He still is a long-armed dude who spots the ball down well, so he was able to play just fine without it, but if the velocity comes back to the mid-90s, you can see where it could be a strong arsenal. So, we didn’t pick one of the consensus top players left available, but Gilbert himself is in a fascinating position being both really good and, developmentally, somewhere between a college arm and a prep arm as far as his general track goes. He’s grown into his body and gone through the awkward phases, but possesses more room to improve on his offerings the likes of which can only come with more repetition and experience. This could end up extending his development time, but we’re getting the best of both worlds if we’re patient with him and confident in how we can get him to where he needs to be.
  5. Ms take Logan Gilbert from Stetson in the 1st round. I didn't get a chance to see him pitch this weekend during the regionals but he appears to be pretty salty.
  6. Haha if the Ms are still swinging after the next couple weeks I'll allow myself to start to be tricked into believing.
  7. We do, Cole Conrad will be a Sr this year and started 7 games last year before he got hurt/Decker took his job.
  8. Agreed. I do like the 3 players you mentioned quite a bit. Definitely puts some extra pressure on the coaching staff to lock up Henrich. That being said, the lack of depth is a nice selling point if Henrich has expressed interest in playing early and often as he'll get more than a fair shake. I haven't gotten the chance to see Nelson play yet due to geography but I did see him at State Wrestling and he's pretty explosive (plus I'm biased towards wrestlers). I have gotten the chance to see Snodgrass and I came away really impressed. Great athlete, super tough and he's got some obvious leadership traits that you can't teach. I think he's going to be a good one.
  9. Cautious optimism going into the year. If Miles is going to go out, he'll at least be able to say he did so with an uber experienced roster.
  10. Disagree 100% with the sock thing. A pop of color is a nice way to break up the outfit. Only exception to the popped collar rule is on the golf course IMO. I've got fairly pale skin and I pop my color all the time as a way to combat sunburn. I'm willing to trade some ridicule for a reduced risk of skin cancer haha. No issue with the curved bill though I prefer a more subtle one like you see most baseball players do with their bills.
  11. Thanks for posting @MLB 51, saw the news this morning. While I don't love trading a SP prospect that was close to major league ready in Moore, he was at best projecting to be a back end rotation guy. Acquiring Colome helps bolster the bullpen a little bit more as Nicasio has struggled with late inning, high leverage situations. Span will most likely slide into LF and take away alot of playing time for Ben Gamel. All and all I think the trade is fine, the Ms have a really tough June ahead with 2 games against Houston and then from 6/11-6/28 they play LAA and a 4 game set against Boston before going on the road and playing NYY, Boston and Baltimore.
  12. Agreed Gonzales was dealing 2 nights ago. He's pitched with alot more aggressiveness in his last couple starts and it's obviously yielded some positive results. King Felix continues to struggle early in games, he just can't seem to avoid the big inning in the 1st 3. I feel like the Ms got a little unlucky when they only came away with 1 run having the bases loaded w/ Cruz up and only getting 3 runs off 10 or 11 hits is a tough break. That being said, they ran pretty pure the first 2 games with pulling out the late win on Tuesday. Hard to argue with winning 2 of 3 at Oakland. Good chance to rip off a nice homestand with Minnesota, Texas and TB coming into town.
  13. John Oliver's show is starting to approach jumping the shark territory for me. Every week it's the same thing over and over again and it's getting tiresome. The only redeeming part of the show is their long form pieces that are hit or miss for me and when they do something absurd like the train set they sent to Scranton, PA. I did enjoy last week's topic of rehab facilities although I saw an almost identical story on ESPN.com a few weeks ago that talked about the play by play announcer for the Red Wings who just lost a son to addiction after they shipped him to Florida for rehab. http://www.espn.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/23053946/how-detroit-red-wings-ken-daniels-voice-hockeytown-lost-son-drugs-insurance-fraud-espn /Thread Derail
  14. @Savage Husker man how great is this?! First Haniger gets drilled in the forearm and will probably be out for a couple days and then Segura dinged his shoulder scoring the winning run after diving into home plate and running into Lucroy. That means 5 of the top 6 hitters in the Ms opening day lineup will probably be out tonight. Awesome. But, hey apparently Jayson Werth is still around! I saw the Ms are bringing him up from Tacoma. That being said, the pitching staff is holding tough and has been a really nice surprise. Leake looked good again last night with the exception of the dumb mistake on the error that helped keep Oakland's inning alive and ultimately led to their 2 runs.
  15. I wonder if some of it stems from when he first took over the job in '99 and right out of the gate, Nebraska put a couple beatings on Iowa in '99 and '00. It appears that Ferentz filed those blowouts away in his "Count of Monte Cristo" folder and was plotting his revenge for a while.
  16. The similarities between Iowa and Colorado are intriguing as both teams legitimately despise Nebraska and were always amped up for the game. I feel that perhaps Nebraska fans view Colorado in a more favorable light due to Colorado being a more prominent player on the National stage in the 90s and them having success against TO whilst Iowa's wins came against a lame duck coach in Riley and Pelini. If Iowa is able to still win once Frost (hopefully) gets NU up and running I think you'll see this rivalry explode to a next level of hatred.
  17. Yup, it certainly does. I wish him well in his next spot. Super talented guy, just couldn't make weight and he either doesn't want to grind against Red/can't beat him.
  18. This. The last time Bama played a true road game OOC was 2011!! They went to State College and beat Penn State.
  19. I'm in favor of whatever puts Nebraska in the best possible position for postseason glory. CFB has been collectively complaining about the SEC having only 8 conference games for a while, if the SEC is unwilling to go to 9 games, I see no issue with the Big Ten matching them.
  20. One of the few brights spots in an otherwise disappointing season. Schreiber was a total masher.
  21. Well, at least Scott Schrieber made himself some nice coin! Move the Big 10 Freshman of the year out of the closer spot and he gets hurt. Move the Friday night starter to the bullpen and make him completely irrelevant Move Alvarado to your Friday night starter and out of the OF and completely ruin his Sr. year and possibly his draft stock. Brilliant work all around Erstad.
  22. Good poll with some tough choices. I went with Whisky 2, Electric Bugaloo but I came really, really close to picking 2010 Texas. Don't get me wrong, the beatdown losses stink but after a while you just block it out. Nebraska hyped that game against Texas to the Nth degree (no pun intended) and Nebraska came out and laid an absolute egg against Texas. It was maddeningly frustrating. I can still picture Rex Burkhead and Brandon Kinnie dropping sure TDs passes. Plus....Texas.
