Agreed. He's 62 and he's been at Utah for 28 years. Don't know if he has a brand new rebuild project in him even if he was interested, but he would've/could've been a great steal 6 years ago.

This is a good move. We all know that jokes aren't funny if they don't have a disclaimer saying 'this is a joke' very apparent.

Sucking for a while is no reason to take good candidates out of consideration. That's fear-based decision making and it's the type of mentality that leads to hiring somebody like Mike Riley. Doesn't matter if you haven't won a game in a month or ten years - you find the guy you think is the best fit for the job and that may or may not include previous head coaching experience. Oklahoma after the 90's wasn't too scared to hire unproven Bob Stoops 'given the importance'; 23 years later I'd say that given the importance they did the right thing.

Oregon is a pretty terrible example since the Nike money and attention is a massive part of their status as a top brand now.

I'm not claiming Rhule isn't a great coach. He very well might be. I'm cautioning against attributing the turnaround solely to Matt Rhule being a miracle man, similar to UCF's turnaround not being only attributable to Scott Frost being a great coach. Bad coaches have great early turnaround success stories pretty often.

I'm talking about the psychology of winning football games. The rape scandal and toxic atmosphere in that regard is beyond appalling. I'm not commenting on that. All I'm saying is that Rhule didn't inherit something even in the same universe as say a Bill Snyder or Lance Leipold type in terms of a losing culture - the school still had the resources, the taste of winning, and plenty of talent that had won big already.
